    With your father... who's completely not into board games? I sure would be unhappy if these are the choices my teenage kids brought to me. (I understand what you tried to do here. I would have never gotten my father to play anything. And for my father in law, it might have been go fish, uno, or poker. But are those really choices?)

    Give anything if I could play another game of his version of Chess with him.. My Dad introduced me to my first wargame when he got me A.H.'s War At Sea in Xmas '78. Even for a simple game the rules were way over our heads at the time, but that ended up as my gateway game.

    A tactic I've used is to NOT surround the flag in bombs. Make a decoy structure of bombs. An opponent is more likely to suspect the flag is in a + formation, than a lone - un-moved piece in the mid-late game. But do remember. Without bombs, the opponent has the possibility of randomly coming across without using their defusers. If you play against the same players over and over. It is a useful tactic, but dangerous one. Should not do this more often than 1 in 8 games, or so. Or else your opponent will pick up on the fact that this is something you tend to do.

    Silly question. He said “if I can get 4 or 5 actions in a row.” How is this possible? Maybe I am doing actions and generations wrong? I thought we go around the table with each player playing actions forever until everyone has passed. How can that result in 4-5 actions in a row?

  • @kubulinaa
    @kubulinaa19 сағат бұрын

    Sorry about that, I needed something that added some visual variety. Acquire is not the prettiest game out there, and looking at the components endlessly struck me as being a little bit monotonous. There are also some things that are really tough to illustrate using the game components. For example, how else to visualize "defending a chain" ? So, I did my best. I hope the actual content is of use to you though

    Wow. Guy tried putting Necro at the bottom!?? I know this is all subjective but concenses is Nekro is in the upper tiers. For my list, 1: Hacan 2: Jol Nar 3: Naalu 4: Yssaril 5: Mahaact 6: Titans 7: Naz-Roka 8: Nekro 9: Sol 10: Xxcha and last place goes to Muaat, I know Aarborec is the consensus worst, but in my experience people fear War Suns WAY more than infantry and they respond accordingly

    Pshh- “grandma game.” My grandma f-king played Texas hold’em, and she’d keep my money. I was 12! I don’t what kind of milksop grandmas you guys had. My grandma was always beating me in trivial pursuit (the ‘84 OG edition,) because she knew she could bottleneck me by always burying me in arts and entertainment for my winning question. You’d think something would eventually warm that heart of ice as she repeatedly smoked my pre-teen and teenage self back then. Grandma showed no mercy. God I miss her as I write this. ❤

    I was a newly minted airman living in a wooden barracks in 1984. Bought a C64 computer and ordered B-1 Nuclear Bomber and Nukewar from Avalon Hill. Very primitive days in computing back then, and a lot of competition. Today, can play solitaire some of the most complex games ever designed, and the computer takes care of everything. I still have my cardboard counter original AH games, but rarely take them out and play anymore. They are old friends that have, well, like me, simply gotten too old. Nice video, and are you taking this series up thru the demise of AH in the late 90s?

    Yes, the final chapter has been mostly written. I need to put it all together, which should be soon. I was distracted by an episode I am nicknaming 7.5, where I was able to interview Mark Herman about the history of Victory Games, which will come out beforehand.

    Surprised not to hear D-Day mentioned. It is a fun game, very simple rules. Like some other titles, it was not true to its focus, rather a liberation of France versus a simulation of D-Day (they later released The Longest Day, one of their most expensive games). Squad Leader is still a favorite, as is PanzerBlitz. I was leaving for Korea in 1994 when the Great American Civil War campaign games were coming out. Which I looked forward to. At the Pentagon in 1999, I learned that Avalon Hill was no more, to be taken over by Hasbro. It felt like an old friend had died.

    With only 80-some actions in a game, I am worried about replayability. Would there be an optimal branch on a nation’s decision tree that guarantees victory and makes the game stale? Money is public, you don't hide it behind your screen. the screens are nice but (given you can deduce what wooden pieces your opponent has off-board) but their most useful feature is as a player aid - the text is well done.
