It is somewhat disturbing to hear Robert Smith refer to all nontraditional societies as "the west". Highly euro-centric.

Exactly. Plus, it's a short explanation of a lifetime of research. It's probably best to be generous. Jared Diamond is pretty amazing when you give him a chance.

I think he was just trying to use the west as the prime example of nontraditional- not as a catch all term. Eastern powers were more agricultural (than the west) up until recently. As they industrialize and urbanize you will see them pick up western trends. This is not to say that the west is somehow "superior" in an ethnic sense. Its more to say that industrialization, technology, and urbanization are all methods of increasing communication, and increased communication is an extremely useful tool for a country to have. The west was among the first to increase communication at rapid rates, and so other countries are following to have the same advantage- this "westernizing".

People are so fucking nitpicky over minutiae shit that hardly matters. Read between the lines a bit. Not everything that everybody says will meet 100% standards of narky political correctness in general discourse.

The correct way to conjugate the name *Rousseau* into an *adjective* would be *Rousselian* rather than "Rousseau-ist": this is because of the variations in French between the suffixes "-eau" and "-el /-elle".

New and challenging ideas can be discomforting, but that's kind of the point isn't it?
