Wet sanding and buffing runs out of a single stage paint job

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I’m showing how I wet sand and buff runs out of a single stage paint job I did on a Toyota Corolla that I painted white. I’ll show you what tools and materials I use to fix the runs and to buff the panels to a smooth gloss finish.

Over 40 years ago we had acrylic enamel paint which was very hard to jump on and buff then they came out with this single-stage Urathane which was a game changer on solid colors but on metallics we were still using lacquer with a Urethane clear on top and now the wonderful world of Base coat clear coat 2k .... I was the first in my city back then to use it and it has gotten even better. The cheap stuff is better than what was top-end back then. Keep up the great work

One of my father's painters told me that if you notice a run while painting, it may seem counter intuitive, but he said to give that area another light coat, so that when you block sand the runs, it is less likely to cut through. Great video Mr. King!

I like the method of applying a thin coat of body filler around the run and then sand the area until the run and the body filler are just barely gone. This protects the surrounding paint and gives a precise indication when the run is now level with the surrounding paint. Polish and you are done. This approach might take just a little longer as you need to wait for the filler to harden, but it makes the sanding faster with much less chance of burning through a spot.

I've had good results cutting the tops of the heads/runs off with a Festool carbide scraper. Quicker than sanding. Others use razor blades to scrape them off. But sanding is definitely easy to control. The beauty of single stage is the heads are the same material as all the rest of the paint

Best tip I could give for painting outside is to pick a day when it’s not too windy and either early when the bugs haven’t gotten to busy outside or late when the bugs aren’t as busy, I hope that helps Micah but when it comes to the painting outside, it won’t be much different from painting inside a building

Depending on how much material you have on your panel and how big the run is, you probably could start with 1000 grit sand paper then move up to 1500 grit and continue going up on grits until you get the results you’re looking for

Hey brother I enjoyed this video, I got told by the paint supplies shop you couldn't correct a single stage and if you messed it up when you put it on the car that was that. But seeing your video give me the confidence to go out and try this. I got one question, when I was putting my paint on I didn't really spray it around well enough and I got some runs, some heavy /cloudy spots.. Will the compound buffing bring out some shine? Also, how did you prep the paint surface, mild car wash and then did you clay bar?

I had a problem wet sanding a single stage Red. The drips/sags dried in different layers, so when you wet sanded you could see different colors (it was like the different pigments settled differently). It outlined the drips / sags. After that I always do base / clear. It's not worth rolling the dice for me. I can always correct bases before clear, and I know I won't have that issue in a clear.

  • @UndergroundPaintKing
