West Virginia is Recruiting High School Students Amidst Teacher Shortage

A nationwide teacher shortage is leading to states taking desperate measures, especially in rural areas of the country. Jessica Gomez visits with a West Virginian community in McDowell County that is attempting to fill that gap by recruiting and fast-tracking high school students through college in hopes that numbers -- and retention -- will increase.

In order to get more teachers/substitute teachers into the classroom they need to raise their salary to, or above the national average maybe, they will get more people interested in the teaching profession.

Our education department barely has enough money to pay the avg or even below avg salary. Plus, most teachers know how corrupt the highschools are and won’t even come near. Last year we had a full (or almost full) English department who slowly dropped off 1by1 so by this year there was no one left.

Parents should be parents to their children. Teaching does appear to be difficult with hypersexual near naked moody students on recreational substances that can beat the teacher up. Then, a lot of those the appropriate age to teach now know merit has no real effect on your placement in life. Slow drug users released from prison can do well if they meet certain people narrative or sexual desires. Most well to do students cheat while partying at expensive private schools. The people under them like nurses and technicians can do the real work.

Responsible parents need to move out of WV for the sake of the future of their children. I don't want unlicensed high school kids to teach my children. I don't want my children to be in a disadvantaged position when competing with their peers.
