Hey! So, I am an English major with teacher certification. I am originally from Louisiana in fact, I took the 1st praxis the day the world shut down. Due to covid, I am a Texan now and even transferred to an A&M system. I was wondering if you could make a video about Teacher certification in Texas? I believe it is like the TexES or something? Thank you! Praying for you during this crazy time!!

I’m in CA considering becoming an English teacher if my current career goal fails. Is it possible once an English teacher develops their grading/time management skills to only work contract hours ? It’s seems rather depressing having to grade 175 essays regularly.

  • @byBriannaStone

Well I don't assign essays often lol. But during school every day I have 100 mins of conference time where I can get grading done. I try my best to get as much work done during school hours as possible, but there's always some work to be done at home. If you are very efficient with time management it MAY be possible to only work during contract hours, but I have not been able to do that and most teachers I work with- even veteran teachers- are not able to. However,. most career fields require working outside of your work hours (yay capitalism).

I tutor in an affluent district and charge $2 per minute. I tutor 5-7 students once or twice a week. I started an LLC and make enough though tutoring to use that income to pay my mortgage. Choose the right state and district. Southern states are the worst!

I got an associate’s degree (2 year degree) in radiology through Austin Community College, went into a job at an Austin hospital straight out of school, with zero relevant work experience, and I grossed $70k that first year. 3 years into my field, I have a job grossing $100k. On the one hand, I feel very fortunate to be making this amount of money with such a minimal educational investment (I have no student loan debt); on the other hand, even $100k doesn’t go that far these days, especially in a city like Austin, TX. It’s a basic middle class income in that city. On $50k, you’re barely living check to check and you better hope you have a spouse or significant other contributing to bills and rent. No thanks.

@@Nikky10000 - Hi! What a small world, the internet is! For me, the radiology/diagnostic imaging pathway has worked out well. I went straight into the cardiac cath lab at the Heart Hospital of Austin after graduating, and have worked in cath labs as a technologist ever since. I get to work on a team of professionals and directly help interventional cardiologists do things like placing stents and inflating balloons in patients’ arteries in order to open up blockages, implant pacemakers, remove or dissolve clots in blood vessels, and all sorts of other procedures. It’s at times very tedious work, but is also very interesting (there is a lot to learn!!), and very rewarding. And, I feel that I’m making pretty decent money for a two-year degree (good financial return on my relatively small educational investment). There are pros and cons to every career, though! Good luck!

@@Nikky10000 - I wish there were an easy, one size fits all answer to that question, but it really depends! It depends if you’re working PRN, part-time, or full-time; it depends which hospital system you’re working for; it depends whether you’re in basic/diagnostic X-ray, or you’re in an “advanced” modality like MRI, or cardiac cath lab, for example. New X-ray graduates doing basic/diagnostic X-ray in Austin, TX are generally not paid all that well, from my experience. I graduated in Aug. 2018, and most hospitals in the Austin area were paying around $20/hr for new grads in diagnostic X-ray. It could be somewhat different now, I don’t know. I moved to Minneapolis, MN 2 years ago (Nov. 2020). I can tell you that I decided to specialize in cardiac cath lab procedures (requires additional education and training) after I graduated, and I started out at $32/hr in Jan 2019. With call pay and overtime, I grossed ~$70k that first year out of school. At my current full time cath lab job in Minnesota, now with 4 years of work experience under my belt, I’m making just over $40/hr, and grossing a little over $100k annually with call and overtime pay factored in.

I don't know how anyone in Austin ISD makes it unless they bought their house a decade ago. Beyond ridiculous. Every district needs to pay more but that pay is even worse compared to Austin's cost of living. There are several districts that pay 58k starting out in the other big cities that aren't as expensive as Austin (don't get me wrong - still too low there too).

The NYC salary is inaccurate. In 2021, a teacher with no experience would make $61k. In addition, with your masters you would be making $68.6k in your first year. And 2021 was our last year with the former contract. With our new contract teachers make $65k in their first year and with your masters 73k. Right now, the max salary is like $140k. You can also get your +30 which takes like 6 months to a year and will increase your salary by 6k. We also have free health insurance and other great benefits. Also what is stopping you from working only your contract hours? And you won’t catch me doing work on my time off lol. We get guilt tripped enough for taking personal days, my vacation days are for ME.
