    In ancient times they were not tormented souls nor savage monsters, but holy creatures (Spirits) and defenders of nature and humans. The same Odin/Wotan has Wehrvolf servants (Freki and Geri). The word Werewolf came from WEHR VOLF, wich mean literally "Protector Wolf". Only in later times, with christianity, they became demonic monsters, as everithing else from pagan cultures.

    In my opinion, werewolves are cooler than vampires. At least you’d be able to live a relatively normal life and you wouldn’t be undead, and you’d only need to isolate yourself in the wilderness for full moon nights. Unless the transformation was purely voluntary and not against your will though.

The first story I ever read about a werewolf was Reflections for the Winter of my Soul by Karl Edward Wagner and I have loved the Lycanthropes ever since even after it lost the fight with the murderous Kane! There are many modern tropes in fantasy that I find annoying, but the modern form of the werewolf is one I find especially so. Always, in modern fantasy and horror, the werewolf form is a monstrous ape-like creature with a dog's head. It doesn't even look like a wolf anymore, more like a monstrous Belgian shepherd with cropped Dobermann ears. While in old myth, werewolves were people who transformed into LITERAL wolves. When a wolf was acting strange, perhaps because of rabies, it might have been assumed to be a werewolf. Werewolves were simply man that transformed into wolf. No strange in-between creature.

    There's also werewolf related mythology in South America (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay). Called lobizón, brought by iberian immigrants (from galician _lobishome_ lit: wolf-man). But instead of a wolf, is a person transforming into a black canine entity that feeds on corpses in the cemetery.

    Woah, this just came up in my recommendations. Cool channel, new sub from me! You have a lot of awesome, interesting comments here, too. I've always been a huge fan of vampires. I love the myth and I really like Vlad the Impaler. But werewolves are so awesome.

  • @TheRavenShadowsWolf
    @TheRavenShadowsWolf2 жыл бұрын

    As much as I love vampires, and they are my top monster at heart, the werewolf has a special place in my Scorpio spirit. In Celtic Astrology, I was born in the month of the Wolf. One of the interesting parts of the werewolf to me is that it is such a primal connection, to that awareness we all have. Somewhere deep inside. Not so deeply for some, and others bury it only all the more. Not everyone fears their animal side. The question of whether it can be balanced in our existence, and or controlled... now that is the root of the intrigue. The struggle against those base impulses we all know we have. To surrender control, submit, or not... that is the sexual side of the myth. Whereas for Vampires, it's liberty to do as one pleases in general. To survive an attack with a predator shown, proves the power in your will. It breathes the curse; for even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night... may become a wolf, when the wolf's bane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright. The psychology is fascinating, because everyone, all of us have a tendency to cage in the base of our nature. What we believe to be moral, and call "right." Each of us struggles, to some extent with just how tiny that cage should seem. How viciously we long, to be freed. Howl on, my friends... and join the pack for a good run, yes. No! Maybe? What's that I see, oh yes... it's just another Bad Moon, Rising. Happy Halloween.

What I like most, was that most of the story told comes from mythology and folklore instead of more modern movies or other incarnations of the Werewolf. I've played DND. I have toyed with the idea of playing an LG PALADIN with lycanthropy. When he goes werewolf, outside of the physical change, is that he goes from LG to CG in alignment. This is how I see the party meeting the werewolf. The party is fleeing from an unwinnable battle when they cross paths with a huge werewolf. Said werewolf points in a direction opposite of were he is looking. Points again and roars. The party takes the hint and heads away as the werewolf slips into the darkness. Soon, the party can hear the sounds of a great battle in the distance. Screams of terror, vicious growling, frantic voices, the yelps of an injured K9. The party doesn't know what happened. After a passage of time, through the light of the campfire, they see a severely injured werewolf approach thier camp. He walks/ crawls through the magical Ring of Protection and cuddles up next to the campfire. What do you all think? Does this sound like a fun character?

  • @doomkitty8386

    @doomkitty8386

    2 жыл бұрын

    That sounds like a great character intro, but there's a couple of things to note: 1. Werewolves normally turn CE, not CG. If your DM and party are okay with the difference, then it's not a problem. But you shouldn't assume they'll be okay with it. Maybe have a reason why your werewolf doesn't shift alignment the same way, and maybe have it be something that the character and party have to figure out over time. But at a minimum, your DM should know the reason why. 2. This scenario requires some things from the other party members that the other players may not enjoy. Your character soloing a fight that their party can't win sets you up as the most powerful by a long shot, even if it's in beast form and you get severely injured. By contrast, the healthiest parties tend to be all about equal in strength. They may not want to flee an unwinnable battle, they may be too insightful to not know what the werewolf's doing before he curls up to the campfire, they might be too curious to ignore the sounds of a battle with an injured dog involved, etc. However, the basic premise of a werewolf turning the tide of a fight only to join the party at a campfire later on is sound. You could have the werewolf join the battle, fight the bad guys, and leave or disappear only to later pass through the party's Ring of Protection and join them. Keep it light on the details, and you'll leave room for circumstances and the decisions of the other players to fit into your character's introduction. The Ring of Protection bit sounds cool though, and can give them a clue that your werewolf is not the typical CE. Solve these two issues, and your character could be a lot of fun!

    @@doomkitty8386 I realize that this could cause unbalance if not done correctly. A few things I have mulled over are as follows. 1. In Wolf form, he gains no experience. 2. His animal handling would be heavily penalized. 3. In most royal courts he would be a detriment due to the presence of court wizards, clerics, etc. So he could not be the face of the group, let alone even being let in. 4. As far as alignment change, his god keeps him goodly. Though his god sees lycathropy as his cross to bear. Does paladin over use? If paladin misuses the curse, he could fall out of favor with his god. Etc. 3. In Wolf form, paladin gains no EP.

    @@doomkitty8386 I can't tell you thank you enough. Probably TMI, but I have wanted to be an author since the age of 14. I'm 55 now, and semi-retired. I actually have time to write. I'm dyslexic and ADHD positive. So, the proverbial mountain is even higher for me. Being able to bounce ideas off of you has added a light bulb over my head and a match under my rear end. Thank You. Would you allow me to occasionally bounce ideas off of you? And yes, should I somehow pull this off, you will get credit for your insperation. Many of my ideas for main characters in the past were, in one way or the other too cliche. I, to my knowledge, have never seen a goodly werewolf. I'm sorry for rambling on, I occasionally do that when I get excited about something. I wish you the best, and please know that I have taken both your constructive criticism and positive feedback to heart.

    @@curtisfranzen986 I'm not a writer, but my cousin aspires to be one and my sister is an editor. From them (especially from my sister), I've learned that the most important thing for a writer is to be able to accept constructive criticism and positive feedback. You have that, and as a semi-retired person you're in a better position than most to deal with the other barrier for writing: income. So while it won't be easy, you can do this if you persist at it. I'd be open to getting the occasional idea bounce. Your D&D group, writing groups, editors, etc. will also be able to bounce ideas, probably better than me because they're in person. That said, I'm available here if you want me. One last thing: I don't think this spoils your idea, but there's a webcomic called "How to Be a Werewolf," written by a woman named Shawn Lenore. I think she might have ADHD too. Good werewolfs are common in her comic, but it's set in the modern day and the themes are a bit different from what I picked up from your character. Lenore's protagonist is a werewolf who has to realize and embrace her own power in order to grow into a leadership role that got thrust upon her. She doesn't feel strong at first, she feels nervous and cut off from most of the world because she is scared of herself. If I followed your character correctly, it sounds like he was already a leader, and already powerful, but has to figure out how to properly balance this new power. It's not quite the same, but there is a common element of the werewolf learning how to use their power for good.

    The lore of the werewolf is ancient and complex, so many stories from across the world through so many millennia of one of the most powerful and ferocious paranormal entities in all known folklore. Shapeshifting beings have had stories about them since when people drew and painted stories on caves. Connected to the wolf, a beast that has been hated and fear by civilizations that didn't understand saw them as creatures of cruelty and evil whereas those that respected them saw them as the symbol of honor, courage, and loyalty. So often the werewolf has been presented as connected to the former by saying the wolf was what made the being evil, cursed, and/or diseased. We have rarely if ever truly seen the latter.

I see many flaws in the creature, mostly because I think supernatural things have to happen to make them real and I don't believe in the supernatural, so well i'm sure you know what I mean. Anyway it was cool to learn about the many backgrounds of the Lycanthropic creature. I knew some but not all . The biggest thing I learned is were the term lycanthropy came from specifically. I knew it was greek but didn't know the myth/story behind it. I subbed and look forward to watching more vids. Hope there is one about Vampires, if not what are you waiting on.

    Werewolf in mythology is equal to scapegoat. If something bad happened it could be blamed on a werewolf. If a moral was to be taught it could be strengthened by basing it on a werewolf. Don't do "this" or a werewolf might get you, etc. As people like Petra in medieval Europe, people like this if in family, may have been better to go out in a cloak a night if they had to.

    They are interesting... Because the stories are so wide spread. Many do portray werewolves as an insatiable monster. Others saw them as a kind of warrior, something inspired by the "berserkers" that some Germanic/Norse tribes had. There are even a couple that would even portray the werewolf as the "hero" of a sort and that it's battle isn't so much about "breaking the curse."
