There's a story about a witch that's buried close to the town I live in. Her name was Mary Jane. Apparently some young guys spit one her grave. One did not. They were supposedly in a bad accident and the only one who survived was the one who didn't partake.

As others have said, another wonderful video as we inch ever closer to Halloween night! I love how informative these videos have been during October, and this one was delightfully thorough! For favorite witch from folklore, I'm going to have to go with Baba Yaga. Slavic mythology is fantastically wild and freaky, and nothing says "witch in the woods" like the cannibalistic old hag whose property line is marked with glowing skeleton heads and whose house can just up and take a stroll whenever it pleases. This video also made me think back to a childhood favorite of mine, "The Three Lives of Thomasina," which featured a kind-hearted outcast named Lori "Mad Lori" MacGregor, believed to be a witch because of her natural abilities to calm animals and exceptional healing abilities. As much as I love a good spooky witch figure, I also appreciate characters who were misunderstood, often in relation to healing practices or scientific pursuits that were actually ahead of their time.

Those two young girls that kicked off the witch trials were believed to be having PTSD from the American Indian wars. Since they were in an area where they had to fear for a lot of their safety they moved up to Salem a year or so prior to the witch trials.

I dressed up as a witch twice before. But getting to know my horoscope is a Virgo, I’d be a great good witch to protect innocent people and animals. Plus, the environment because it makes me feel good to think about the beauty, wonders, and importance of nature. So, I feel bad for the people who have been labeled as witches because regular people didn’t understand what it’s like to be so different from society. So much so that some people still treat other (like being diagnosed with autism or ADHD) very poorly.

When it comes to witches from pop culture, my two personal favorites would have to be Mismagius and Delphox from Pokemon. Having raised a Mismagius myself (I gave her the nickname "Missy"), I can tell you that mine is anything but wicked. In the webcomic series "Random Doom", we have Edna, a Sassy-Natured yet Highly Curious Mismagius with a penchant for gossip and a powerful array of spells under her belt. Funnily enough, my Delphox is also nicknamed "Circe". Like her namesake, my Delphox has a habit of turning people into Pokemon with her magic. Rather than doing it out of amusement, she does it as a form of karmic punishment for anyone who has mistreated their own Pokemon. She will restore the person's human shape only when they learn their lesson. On one such occasion, she turned Ash Ketchum's rival Paul into a Gliscor for two weeks as payback for mistreating his Pokemon.

Hecate was actually a goddess of night and moon. Only in few last centuries she started to be connected with witches, for no genuine reason. Link to magic is particularly ludicrous, because all gods/goddesses are by default capable of magic

@@sapphirejade5029 same, although in mine witches are a bit different in the story I'm writing, Witches are more like what they are in modern times, as well as people like Circe, Medea, Morgan le fey, etc. their basically just the same thing as a wizard only female instead of male, no real moral alignment specifically on the other hand, a Hag is a type of witch, which is typically more malevolent. it's based on not only the D&D way in how their described (which is what I'm using currently since I plan on making it a game later on, so making a D&D campaign lets me test it out), but also like Baba Yaga, Black Annis, etc. they actively antagonize people but do indeed have access to other forms of magic not normally accessible to most spellcasters. as well, they tend to form covens and contact supernatural forces, which you can guess inspired that.

One of my favorite witches is Professor Mcgonagall.

I live south of Salem (Jerusalem), Oregon - deep in the Pacific Wonderland. There are hundreds of witches here. I have seen their magic many times. I could write a book about all of my encounters with witches and wizards. The ABC TV series ONCE Upon A Time is all about my hometown - Albany, Oregon. I was married to a Chactaw medium for 19 years. Before that, I was married to an Osborne witch. The Chactaw are the descendants of Quetzalcoatl. Osborne is the House of Windsor. We have it all here. The former mayor of Albany is a Widmark witch. In Switzerland, Widmark means 'witch'.

You did a very good video with many fascinating informations. Of course there is still much more in detail to learn, but all in all i think that you were able to use this short runtime to its fullest.

I'm a witch that follows the kemetic pantheon religiously but magically, my practice uses a lot of Appalachian folk magic with seeds of hoodoo (thanks to previous teachers I've had that left their marks on my practice). My daughter finally reached an age this past year where she got her first spell book for Yule. She and i were both very proud :) ❤

I don’t brew potions or anything but my interest into gothic culture and the interest in the dark arts of mythology, I probably do associate as a witch or this case a warlock. Plus, I do have a pet cat.

It's kind of interesting to deconstruct where the entire stereotyped image of a witch in modern Western Culture comes from. Witch is derived from the word Vitka, which is a Germanic Pagan male priest. Interestingly, a female priest was a Volva & this looks like the origins of the word Warlock, a man who practices black magic. In the Germanic-Nordic culture, Vitka & Volva had different responsibilities & one of the ways one would become corrupted is if they conducted ceremonies/ rituals that were the responsibility of the other gendered priest. The witch's hat is often seen on Odin, in one of the many outfits he is depicted in in different myths & representations, which is also the reason why it sometimes also appears on wizards in pop culture, like Gandalf & the only thing we know about Volva were that they often carried a magic staff. Later, as Christians gained enough power to suffocate what was left of old Pagan cultures, the last practitioners tried to hide it by replacing ceremonial items with household ones, like a broomstick. We have one mention from the Romans'war with Queen Boudica showing women preforming some sort of ceremony wearing primarily solid black dresses. The magic cauldron is also a Celtic religious symbol, apparently, if we believe the interpretations of folk tales from Wales that are believed to he representing gods/ goddesses. And the eye of newt, spider's web, etc stuff seems to derive from old names of medicinal plants. Lastly, a very common European concept is just that anything evil is generally portrayed as being particularly ugly or gross.

As much as I like this episode of Mythology Unleashed, and it being the perfect topic for the Halloween season, I have to say, this episode made me cry. Of course I knew some history going into this of the witch trials, but I guess it was hearing it in this much detail that really broke my heart. So many innocent people (and animals) persecuted, and for the pettiest of reasons... Being single, divorced, or widowed? Having unique appearances, or talking to oneself or animals? Battles over property and possessions? Really??? Oh, and by the way, as a Christian myself, I wish I could reach back in time to the witch hunters and kick them in the balls for making up all this shit. Not only is it slander, but Jesus teaches us to CARE for the widows, and other vulnerable people. Furthermore, even those who really did practice witchcraft, and still do today and all across time, did/do not deserve to die. No one deserves to be persecuted for their beliefs. No one. Whatever happened to Jesus telling us all to love one another, no matter who they are or what they believe? Besides, I've met some witches before, and they're some of the most peaceful people I've known, a lot more than some churchgoers I can mention. * cough * Westborough * cough * Anyway, may all those souls rest in peace, and may that dark chapter of history never repeat itself. 😔🕊️

I used to want to believe in such things, but now i dont. I believe that science is law & there are many things we dont understand about what is possible, but even the unfathable has its limits. I believe that energy is energy & it has to come from somewhere. It doesn't just appear thru your hands like lightning for you to shoot out your fingertips. I think that humans have forgotten much about natural energy & mistaken weilders of energy for mystical and magical beings. If history has taught us anything, it's that we really dont know anything.
