Tricksters | The Cunning and Untrustworthy
In mythology and folklore, most often the forces of good and evil are clearly defined. However, there is always at least one being who does not fit either category: the trickster. They come in all shapes and sizes, genders, species etcetera, crossing established boundaries of law and order, sometimes doing bad things for good rather than malice, or using sneaky manipulation to prey on others, or pranking the unsuspecting, or using cunning to accomplish their goals. This program will discuss some of the characteristics and types of tricksters found in mythology and legend. From the Norse god Loki, to the Native American spirit Coyote, to the Greek Eris, and the Chinese Sun Wukong!

I love them all but Raven from Pacific Northwest Native mythology is my favorite. He's a boundary crosser, a chaotic force that shakes up the status quo but also false assumptions and injustice. He saves the sun, moon and stars because it's what needs to be done and he is the vehicle of that necessity. Sometimes he seems ineffably deep and wise, sometimes silly and mischievous. But to be a Trickster is to be comfortable with paradox and with knowing that everything is in flux. A Trickster's perspective is often of one who is outside the system and sees its with true clarity, holding up a mirror, as you said, to us. That is a beautiful concept.
Another trickster is the raven that stole the sun. Imo that is insanely impressive if not terrifying.
I would say Loki is my favorite. A facet of tricksters is a tendency to 'get around', or tease others who struggle with such. Tricksters tend to reap what they sow in that many of the challenges they face are the results of them somehow creating the problem or taking on the thing willingly. They also can fall into the Byronic hero and general antihero tropes/archetypes.
I’d say leprechauns are good tricksters. They’re not like they are depicted in cartoons they’re actually very sinister.

I really like this video because tricksters are fascinating! I guess my favorites are Coyote, Raven and Anansi. I'd love to see individual videos for different tricksters!
Anansi 🕷️, Esu Elegba 🪄, Papa Legba🎩, Baron Samedi 💀, Kouzen Zaka 👨🏿🌾,John The Conquer 🏃🏿, Sun Wukong 🐒 and Coyote 🐺 my favorite divine tricksters 💨👻
I'm so happy you covered this character type in mythology, and such a thorough video to cover the different types and characters! This is one of my new favorites from your channel! 🤩
Coyote, anansi, big bad wolf, Brer Rabbit and eris both my favorite trickers characters and especially Loki he kind lots of trickers of my favorite trickers.
Me watching the video: "Where's THE trickster I know..." Narration, near the end of the video: "Perhaps the most famous trickster of mythology is Loki-" Me: "THERE'S the nod to my favorite pantheon to learn about." All in all a FABULOUS video! And yes, please! More videos on tricksters like Loki and Coyote! Thank you for the time and effor you put into these videos you do!
you gotta love, when the modest tricksters were presented, classic
Anansi Loki Puck Sun Wukong Coyote and Baron Samedi and Robin Hood are my favourite tricksters within Mythology!
From many members of the the Third Race from "Gargoyles" were depicted as tricksters that shaped the various mythologies on Earth like the Raven, Coyote, Anansi, and Puck.
I love the Trickster archetype.
I find it most interesting that each culture has its own trickster. You exposed the subject beautifully, as always. I keep loving your work, you always go into the intricacies and details of symbolic meanings which is so helpful.
Loki is by far my favorite trickster in mythology
Anyone else notice they show pictures of Robin Hood sometimes in this episode, but don’t even discuss him
I actually made up my own trickster type character. In fact he's my own self insert furrpersona. I named him Jack Renard, after both my favorite fairytale protagonist and the foxy trickster character of French folklore.
Unleash this fantastic mythology on me please lol! Tricksters... let's go!
This is one of the most interesting videos you guys have made. Amazing work as always ❤
What a wonderful topic! Thanks for another great episode. 😁🔥🙌

Speaking of Little Red Riding Hood, in some versions of the original fairy tale, the Big Bad Wolf was actually a werewolf.

Agreed, they scare me, and are very dangerous.
If I could be reborn as any trickster, I would choose to be a daitengu. Not only would I have magical powers, but I could also fly under my own power. As for where I’d live if I was a tengu, Mt. Takao is the place I’d call home. Because it’s a tourist attraction, I’d use my powers to mess with the heads of foreign tourists that are disrespectful as a means of teaching them a lesson.
Love this
Coyote is my favorite trickster!🩷🐺
I have applied some tricksters in my novels. And I always knew that Set was a trickster, though in the Egyptian pantheon, he is my grandfather. Planning to do him sometime?

Mmm mmm about the only Trickster I know of is Loki as you said he is the most famous............. What and the Monkey King he kind of famous one too
I think that if Sun Drop and Moon Drop were mythological characters, Moon would be the trickster. Sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful, you never actually know.
❤❤❤❤❤
Ya know, the whole fight between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite could have been easily avoided if the three had remembered that at a wedding the BRIDE is the fairest. Greedy little goddesses.

A trickster soul will teach your only how to be bad not to be good and they won’t care about your development as a person . They will take your energy which made you lethargy and tired instead giving you energy to be healthy .
👍🏼
Diego Dela Vega is a trickster himself since he constantly pretends to be a spineless fop to keep others from realizing that he is Zorro. Erik, aka The Phantom of the Opera can also be considered a trickster with the pranks he pulls on the managers of the theatre, using his skills as a ventriloquist to make Carlotta sound like she was croaking, or, like in the movie, switching out her throat spray that made her lose her voice onstage.
My favorite are Loki and Son Wu Kong.
😊
So the Trickster is the chance or wild card.

My favorite archetypal character trope in fictional stories. I've always found the stories of tricksters to be much more complex, interesting, and compelling than the boring stories of fabled heroes always ending up winning against the villain, and saving the day by overcoming difficult trials and tribulations. And them always being bound by a "moral code" where the lines of good and bad are defined makes heroes so boring to relate. Plus, such characterization for morally "good" heroes is such a narrow-minded perspective of the grander worldview where certain situations aren't as easily defined by the lens of heroes seeing things as simply "good", or "bad". Such narrative tool is cliche, as it is overdone.
I love how you put Thieves and Herm’s one after another! 🤘🥷
