When we lived in the old house we had a coyote that would sleep on the porch. The rest of the pack would sleep in the edge of the wood line near the creek. I came out on the porch to grab some wood for the fire and he was just sleeping there to get out of the snow. He jumped off the porch when I stepped out. Then a man that had the same color hair as the coyote started hanging around our place. I wasn't the only one that saw him. Other members of our family and friends saw him too. Joe, a family friend, saw a man run across our porch then saw the coyote standing by the tree at the end of the porch. All of that happened within a couple of minutes as he pulled down into our driveway. We had a circle drive off of the highway. Weird, I know.

While off grid in Alaska I had a wolf run out of the woods into a clearing I was walking through (deer hunting) and looked right at me and howled , was about 30-40 yrs away. I was going to shoot it but decided not to.. instead of running off like they normally do it trotted directly toward me and stopped about 10 yrds away , put it’s head down and slowly walked right up to me. I had my rifle aimed right at it the whole time.. it got about a foot away and turned around and walked into the woods. Strangest thing I ever saw.

@@guaporeturns9472 My Great Great Uncle was a Game Warden in Anchorage in the 1920's. I have his Game Note Book , it talks about his supplies and Fisheries and Traps. He was friends with Jack London and Robert Service. I have a News Paper article from the Times-Picayune 1/19/1938; he was interviewed about the Gold Rush. What Stands out is he Openly Accused the Government of lying about the Wounded Knee Massacre, he was a witness to the carnage... The experience he had led him to live a life of Isolation in Alaska. Whats Stranger is I had a Dakota Woman tell me I was possessed by a Windego. My Ancestors life experiences were crucial for me surviving... also asking for modern medical help, in addition to understanding my Ancestors Experiences.

Great job on this video. You may think I'm crazy but I personally saw a Dogman/Wearwolf, in real life and it was up close. I live in northern Michigan and there have been sightings of Dogmen around here for hundreds of years. The Natives up here call these Dogmen the protector of the forest. Come to northern Michigan and go camping for awhile in the Manistee national forest, you may see a Dogman of your own..

Dogman is 100% real matey. I've seen photos my friend took she has a pack that comes around her house at night. Not all are bad like ppl say definitely not bt not to be messed with either. If someone threatens them well they've had it. They've been known to track ppl down if they hurt ome of their own aswell &harass them. Yes I've heard they are the police of the forest basically. The sasquatch who are also real are the keepers of the forest too. There are far far worse things out there than any bigfoot or dogman

In the Bible "god" transforms Nebuchadnezzar, Nimrod and Esau into feral man /beasts as an " outcast punishment" you speak of. All three cases were temporary but I've often thought while in this frame of mind , in the wild, that they most likely slept with wolf packs and were the source of werewolves and the legends thereof. Thank you for an interesting pod cast. The legends are not confined to only Europe though. My son at age 7 had a dream we were in the woods starving and I told him to wait but he followed me to a stream where I transformed to a wolf and caught us a big fish to eat. I thought this so interesting because I've been told I reminded some of a wolf and I've always felt an affinity with wolves but never mentioned this to my son.

Your reference was Daniel 4:33. Nebuchadnezzar wasn't transformed. He simply lost his mind. "He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his (unkept) hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird." After eating grass for seven years he lost considerable weight and his hands and feet would've looked like an eagle's talons. After seven years Nebuchadnezzar's sanity was restored and he was brought back into the palace. The only thing that kept him alive was the fact that Daniel was Prime Minister and any assassin would've had to get past The Ten Thousand Immortals. Who were the greatest fighting force in the Middle East.

In old slavic myth story in a book my dad bought me when I was 14 it was said (oral story written down) that one rude guy entered a forest and disrespected local god by going around and being a jerk so the said god send wolves to kill him and he then came back alive as a werewolf because dying was not enought of a punishment. Mind you, it was not a story of "The first" werewolf, just sorta explanation where do werewolves come from. Angry gods curses. Also, other time a wizard, god in mortal disquse, or very angry guy (unclear) wrote/made symbol above a treshold of house he was kicked out of that meants "whoever crosses the said treshold will be turned into a wolf". And they did until the treshold burned.

Long before the Irish connection, we do of course have the story of Lykaeon, who was turned into a wolf by his own terrible behaviour, killing and eating his son. In some versions he is metamorphosed by Zeus, in others, including Ovid, it just happens that he reconciled his inner wolf with a change of outer form. In Greek lukos meant wolf, cognate with Latin lupus and Germanic wolf. As Lykaon was king of the mountainous area of Arcadia, he probably reflects an ancient cult to ward off wolves. His daughter Callisto was probably a she bear goddess for similar reasons. Her name means ‘most beautiful’, suggesting a taboo about speaking her name. She may be an avatar of Artemis, whose name contains the root arta, she bear.

Look at Rigveda mandala 1 hymn 105. It is probably attesting to the oldest known proto indo European werewolf myth. Trita being the slayer of the serpent becomes a werewolf by curse from brhaspati(or dyaus).

I'm currently writing a short story about Setanta (the 'proper' name of Cuchulain) to tie him in with my Tudor novel series. Although it's not going to feature many of his legendary feats, these being dismissed as pure myths or conflated events involving other heroic figures, it's still useful to discover little nuggets of information about his brief, but bloody, existence. Thanks for these videos, they can be rather inspiring.

@@oduinn7948 I looked up various versions of the story/Ulster Cycle and found both spellings. I chose the version I did because it's easier to insert into a KZread post. My 'Dictionary Of Irish Mythology' gives him as 'Cuchulain'. If we wanted to get truly anal it should also have been 'Sètanta' but I dropped the accent for similar reasons. 🙂

The legends of were beasts comes from The Berserkers. These were warriors who clothed themselves with hides of wolves or bears. When they went to war they would whip themselves into a psychotic frenzy before entering into battle. Mythical werewolves were different in Ireland than in continental Europe. They were protectors of travelers, women and children. They also could be called upon to go to war by the ruling chieftains. The fact that Irish werewolves never lost their humanity when they changed is the biggest difference from other werewolves. Also try and find the movie LADYHAWKE. Stars Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Leo Kern and Matthew Broderick. Hauer's character would turn into a wolf at night while Pfeiffer's character would turn into a hawk come daylight.

Bezerker is also a term that means bear shirt as ‘actual” bezerkers would wear bear and wolf skin. There was also the thought they they could shape shift into the animal.

The "Were" prefix, meaning "Man" was also used in the Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, and Norse term "weregild" meaning "man money". This was the price that would be paid to the next of kin (or lord) of a killed man by the killer to compensate for the loss of the man. This would lend weight to the were=man interpretation of the word werewolf.

This is my theory: Being a 'werewolf' was probably a rite-de-passage in pre-Christian Europe for young men from nobility and/of warrior class. (It's documented in Ireland the early middle ages and were called Fianna.) They had to live outside the villages in the wild lands or woods and act as a hunter and learn how to fight. (Comparable with the young warriors who went on Viking raids or the 'find out how the world works' Rumspringa period of the Amish.) It's possible that at this age beardhair started to grow and that the boys came back as hairy (unshaved, unwashed) men who looked like beasts. Also notice that the name 'werewolf' could come from 'wolf wearing', like dressed up as a wolf. Or that 'wolf' could also mean 'hunter' (as in Beowulf -> bee-hunter -> bear?) The boys get a bond with eachother and become sexual active at this age too. (There seem to be a connection between werewolves and queerness / male-to-male sexuality in the ancient European stories about them. This is different from the werewolves in Hollywood movies.) They were allowed to come back to the society around winter time when the weather conditions in the woods are too harsh. They got shelter, were protected and fed by the nobility in winter time. They served sometimes as a private army for the landlord, so they must have had warrior skills. Maybe they were plunderers and they weren't allowed to have contact with their family or friends during this time. But... they could get into the villages once a year on a special day (around winter stolstice), but at night, in disguise and unrecognizable. This was a special moment in the year where families came together, and also the in the wild living boys were not forgotten, although they couldn't join the meal or go to the feast as theirselves, they were though present in a special way. Maybe they gave presents to their families from plunderings abroad. Faces were made black with coal (maybe from the burned houses at the plundering raids) and they wore animal skins around their bodies, they made loud noises so that everyone was scared and stayed inside their homes. (Making loud noises is called 'joelen' in Dutch, see the link with the word Yul, pre-christian name for christmas.) The boys roamed through the villages and got some 'offerings' in the form of food and drinks from their family which was put there in front of their parental homes. (See here the tradition of giving food to the figure that Santa Claus was based on: the Dutch Sinterklaas (Saint-Nicholas) and his helper Black Pete or Krampus or the local varieties of this feast like Sunneklaas on the islands in the north of The Netherlands) Maybe there is also a connection with Halloween and the Wild Hunt of Wodan. Later the guys became older and returned to their families. They were calmed down, wiser, maybe richer from plunderings. Soms guys could have had rabiës from animals in the woods and showed some strange behavior. Some guys stayed in the woods (see the stories of the Wildman / Wildeman in Dutch). Others became a part of society, but sometimes they went back to the woods to 'werewolf' with their friends. And maybe that has a male-to-male sexual component too. Later Christianity came up and had problems with this rite-de-passage. They made comparisons between the devil and a werewolf. The church tried to stop this behavior and incorporate it. And maybe that's why we see a character as (Black) Pete (Zwarte Piet in Dutch) or the Krampus accompanied with the Saint-Nicholas figure. It wouldn't surprise me if werewolves are related to the Vikingraids or something like that.

I still agree with Snorri Sturluson that "beserker" probably meant "bare-shirt" as in one who goes into battle with no armor, as the word "berserker" seems to have included ulfhednar, but I realize I'm in the minority. Academia has decided "bear-shirt" is the true etymology, despite few if any depictions of bear-pelted warriors compared to wolf-pelted, and wolves being much more present in Norse myth.

Same, especially being bjorn is connected to bear whereas berr is connected to bare/naked, 'skyrta' for shirt (Swedish skjorta). "Berr-skyrta" sounds a lot more like berserker to me. I also feel, personally, if they were to be referring to someone _wearing_ bear hides they would be more prompted to use the word "skinn" (pretty easy to guess what that means now) than they would something like "shirt" as they were quite astute on garments.

The wolf is my spirit animal. I have an Odin necklace with Geri and Freki. The Ulfhednar are the clan I admire most in Norse history. The connection between Lugh and lycanthropy is definitely interesting This one of my favourite channels on here! I always learn something new. When i was high i wrote short story about boy named Randal who met soul of fire wolf burned on stake for being a witch's familiar, boy took the wolfs soul into his body and every time he turned into wolf beast he burned green like sulfur, but the wolf in exchange for strength eat boy's body parts, so when boy became a man he had no legs, one arm, one eye and no jaw, was a cripple pulled by fire wolf in magic sleigh.

There are beings called Jinn mentioned in the Quran. It is an umbrella term for beings who are not human and are made from smokeless fire. They can fly or shapeshift into animals and have powers. They see us and can interact with us but we can't see them.They exist in another dimension and we can perform rituals to summon them but that's forbidden in our religion.

Language is a strange thing. Most sources I've seen say Lugh derives from the same root as lux, or light, as well as leuc- or white. Lupus/Lykos/Vulkos seems to derive from Proto-Indo-European "Wlkwos" meaning something like "dangerous." I find it fascinating that Lugh and Apollo get associated with wolves, since they are usually thought of as solar deities and wolves are mainly depicted as nocturnal/lunar.
