Koschei the Deathless | Russia's Evil Sorcerer
With magical powers and artefacts, immense greed and ambition, and boundless cruelty, Koschei is a powerful and terrifying villain of Slavic mythology. Despite his incredible power, Koschei fears only one thing: his own death. To gain immortality he places his soul into a needle, then hides the needle in an egg, in a duck, in a hare, in a chest, beneath an oak, on an uncharted island. With so many heroes seeking revenge against this wizard, can Koschei truly remain deathless?
MYTHOLOGY HAS BEEN TOLD AND RETOLD IN MANY FORMS ACROSS TIME, STORIES AND ACCOUNTS MAY VARY.

Man, that would be the ultimate disrespect. Imagine being like “do your worst, foul wizard! Your torture will not erode the heroism of my sacrifice!” and then he just turns you into a pile of walnuts and leaves.

Koschei the deathless is probably the fist person from folklore that fits the textbook definition of a lich

That's only because this particular video portrayed Koshei like a lich, the original folklore actually doesn't resemble a lich that much, koshei is not prominently a wizard, he is not a resurrected undead, the stories where he actually summons or controls undead are very few. In the tales he is more like a supernatural evil king, who is or has become immortal by being a little bit dead-like (skeletonish)

@@albertdittel8898An undead and evil creature who died by stashing their soul into an object to achieve immortality is the description of a lich. If Koschei did that, then he is a lich by modern standards, and likely because he is probably the inspiration.
Koschei is the supposed inspiration of modern fantasy in many RPGs especially DnD about Necromancer and Lich - beings that hold over the power of death and darkness.

Here in Bulgaria we know koshei as the guy Decapitated by Tsar Ivan Asen xD
I first watched an episode from Myths and Monsters, learning about the Hero’s Journey and learning about the tale about Ivan rescuing his wife from the villainous Koschei. Now, after graduating from high school about ten and a half months ago, memorizing the Hero’s Journey and the rehearing the old tale of Ivan’s heroic journey brought me back memories. Planning to do that tale sometime on the day after my birthday or something like that?

Baba Yaga: WHAT DO YO- (see’s Marya) oh Marya darling it is so good to see you again (also see’s Ivan) and who’s this idiot? Marya: this idiot is my husband, he unknowingly unleashed Koschei the deathless from our imprisonment. Baba Yaga: …..with a husband like That! And in that stature, I’m am both unsurprised and sorry for you. Alright, come in.
This guy is a dungeons and dragons lich!
I actually watched the featured cartoon back in my youth, amazing cartoon by the way Russian production in animation is truly underrated
Neat to see where the inspiration for Horcruxes came from.
missed out a lot about Ivan he was tasked to watch over baba yaga's herd of horses and she intentionally told the horses not to return but Ivan had already befriended a bird a deer and a bee which all helped get the horses to return to the stable on the last night Ivan was approached by the bee or the bird and they told him of baba yaga's plan to kill him so he then he stole a horse also missed out the several times Ivan tried to rescue Maria from Koschei's castle and he was caught loads until he found out that koschei got his horse from baba yaga's herd I cant remember the full story im scottish but its a cool story really cool story
Fun fact: Doctor Who's best frenemy the Master is alleged to have been called Koschei in his youth. Your description at the end sure sounds like a regeneration cycle. The Master was granted a second set of regenerations; Missy circumventing Death, itself, for Twelve; and the suggestion that some versions of Rasputin are based on Koschei mean that the Master luring her to Russia to steal/swap her body while posing as Rasputin only adds to this.

Just want to point out that you say that all the fictional wizards we know of are based on this bloke just wanted to say that lord of the rings and Harry potter aren't real obviously but rasputin was a real a very real person and considered and dark sorcerer so if anything they all came from him not the other way around I mean if thus bloke was real then ok I'm wrong but I don't think he was whereas rasputin was 100% real
the depiction here is far too much based on modern ad&d like fantasy wizard. Koshei is not a scholar of dark arts, nowhere is it said that he studies and all that style that comes with it. He is depicted much more often as a supernatural evil king than as a wizerd, when he is depicted as a wizard, it is not the style of a ad&d-like scholar wizard. He is also not undead in the modern fantasy sense in that he has not died and has been resurrected. If you want a modern fantasy parallel: Koshei is much more like Sauron than like Saruman. Or regarding warhammer: more like a vampire lord than like a necromancer.
