The Jack Russell incarnation of Werewolf by Night appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe feature Werewolf by Night TV special, portrayed by Gael García Bernal. In Werewolf by Night, on a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic.

Werewolf by Night feels like a portal to another universe where the Dineyplus MCU (and MCU as a whole) went for Quality over quantity. It is a fantastic special in on any kind of standards, not just for the MCU standards. People are criticising it not because it is a bad story (it isn't), but because it is not your typical MCU story. A story that is as much about the shared universe it exists in than about itself. One that needs to prepare you for 20 other films and tv series rather than to be enjoyed by itself. The moment you see it as its own thing rather than like an origin story for a wider Werewolf by Night sub-franchise, the moment you can appreciate it for what it is.

I enjoyed Werewolf By Night immensely: for its evocation of classic horror films; the finding of its own pace and ways to explore characters; and for being its own self-contained story. I was relieved to be able to enjoy it without having to wonder where it fit into the Avengers Phase IX or some multiversal shenanigans. Sadly, I'm sure that some fanatic will spoil this one day by telling me its connections in mind-numbing detail, or that the fur on the costumes 'isn't comic accurate' and yelling that I'm thinking about it wrong - especially my fancy about Elsa Bloodstone being the grandmother of Jessica Jones! I want the luxury to imagine for myself, just for once in this heavily-curated, overly lore-bound franchise. I've begun to re-watch more of the Marvel films and shows that lay outside of and unacknowledged by the MCU, seeking a similar sense of wonder.

I feel like the release of a color version warrants much, much more discussion about Marvel's approach to individuality and overall Disney's failure to understand (or often even care about) their own productions, giving rise to both soulless remakes and sequels missing the entire point of the original, but also vast freedom for their artists to create anything as long as it makes the company money (e.g. Encanto and Strange World would not exist if Disney cared).

The MCU should make more projects like this. Lower budgets and maximum creator control would allow for more experiments to introduce new characters and stuff. Hawkeye was the only other show that I felt like got to break off from the formula in a lot of ways and it was amazing and introduced/reintroduces some great characters.

The Guardians Holiday Special was so much more fullfilling and self-assured. Giacchino is clearly still learning the ropes in WBN, taking some interesting risks but not knowing how to make them pay off fully. Even when discussing the style alone - the style never rises above being a decent horror homage.

Man, I love Werewolf By Night. Jack and Elsa are such good foils to each other and Ted is an amazing outlier to their dynamic. The 3 of them were set up incredibly, I already care so much about these versions of the characters. I think Marvel would be wasting some serious potential by not making a Midnight Sons movie with them, but they don't need one to make audiences fall in love with these characters. I'm not even a big fan of any old horror films, but lemme tell you, Werewolf By Night is perfect in black & white and only *slightly* less good in color, but that could just be my own personal bias from watching it in black & white the first 3 times I watched it. Freaking love this project

I used to love Werewolf By Night comics, but I didn't watch this special because I was so burned out on Marvel stuff after Endgame that I didn't want to be disappointed yet again. Better to leave my guy Jack on the page where I loved him. This retrospective changed my mind. It sounds like this special was the equivalent of an oversize one-shot comic--not a single issue or a full graphic novel, but a mid-length self-contained story. That's the format I always thought Jack most thrived in. The (lack of) color is a nice touch, since a lot of great WWBN comics were black and white. And the shots of Jack interacting with Ted were downright heartwarming. I think I'll give this thing a try. Thanks, Pillar of Garbage.

Welp, update: I have now seen the special (my viewing was delayed due to moving house and then getting sick) and yesssssss I loved it. Best Marvel thing I've seen in a WHILE. I first watched it on my laptop in bed while wrapped up in quilts and guzzling a hot drink, and it was the only good part of getting some nasty virus from my toddler niece. I'm gonna watch this thing four more times and then dive headfirst into AO3. (Do people ship Jack and Ted? Elsa/Jack seems obvious, but I hope some enterprising monster aficionado out there ships Jack with Ted.) New hyperfixation unlocked. Thanks again, POG!

Updating again: I am now one of the more prominent writers in this tiny fandom and am slowly working an elaborate multi-fic storyline into a fixit of (some of) what I hated about Endgame. (It's not gonna fix the fat jokes or the broken causality, but so far I've found a narratively satisfying way to save Black Widow WITHOUT punishing her for infertility and I'm working toward major repairs to Captain America's arc.) Thanks thrice, POG!

I haven't seen "Werewolf By Night" since it came out but I did like it a lot and I still do adore it! I don't know if it was supposed to be the Theme(TM) Heavy Story but "humans are the real monsters" is always welcome (and unfortunately true given the state of the world) -ditto the "family affects us for better or worse". Also it went interesting places, our protagonists had great chemistry, it expands the MCU in interesting ways if they decide to follow the supernatural horror road, and I like horror films -and after watching the original "Nosferatu" film with live music in a film festival a couple of months ago I think I appreciate it even more! Looking forward to more works by mister Giacchino -and also great videos from you kind sir. Keep up the great work and take care!

  • @peachgo3

Great retrospective as always! I adore Werewolf by Night a whole lot, too. The consensus in my bubble is that Jack is a great addition to the MCU protagonists and displaying a kind of "softer", more emotionally mature masculinity that we haven't really seen before in other male main characters in the franchise. I'm sure part of that is to strengthen the contrast of his "montrous" werewolf persona, but I really love it either way. His voice, his physicality, and the way he phrases things is all very endearing imo. Also, though I can see the comparisons with Black Widow, I think Elsa is a nice fresh take on the "hardboiled woman" type character compared to Natasha, because she is allowed to be actually transgressive and distraught and even kind of mean. She isn't smirking or cracking jokes all the time. I love that about Natasha (the sailor line from Cap 2 is one of my favourites!) but I think Elsa as a character could've profited from cutting even more of the typical MCU humour. I would honestly watch stand-alone projects for either of these characters. Ted too! I do think the characters are a big strength of the special as a whole, with Elsa's deranged mother, the diverse hunters, and even the background servants who are all kind of weird. I guess I do have a soft spot for this special haha!

Hi, PoG. Love your videos. I really enjoyed WBN and I have been a fan of the comic since the 1970s. The length is perfect really for a seasonal watch. It doesn't need a strong connection to the MCU or even further story about these characters. The fact that I want to see more of them and know more about them after watching means they are effectively written, fun, and mysterious characters. That seems appropriate. The found family vibe fits in with the MCU at large to me. BTW i think the "special presentation" opening itself is homage to the old CBS special presentation animation that used to run before holiday specials in the olden times. lol Keep up the great work.

Werewolf by night is what Marvel needs to do to stay in business like the comic books they need to make their own niches that people want to watch. Growing up I was a Chris Claremont X-Men but I read some other Marvel Comics like Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk this was during the early to mid 80s when Marvel built up a large fan base you didn't have to read The Avengers or Iron Man to understand Marvel Comics. My hope is this the direction that will go in because it's to a point where people are not going to watch every Marvel movie. And I love werewolf By Night

I love Werewolf-by-night and I was a bit disappointed we didn't see another special presentation this year. I would really love it if the freight train of the MCU continued to pick up talented and passionate people and give them opportunities to make love labours like it. I also would have no issue with any of the characters popping up elsewhere, though I think if we are to see more of the special presentation I would maybe prefer it to give opportunities for different classic vibes of cinema and different characters, as well as more creators. That said, definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at more Giachino, Jack, Elsa or Ted.

I feel like a lot of the reviews of this are unwarranted (not counting this one ^). There's nothing wrong with this special. Being light on character and story isn't the same as having bad characters and a dumb story. The feature did exactly what it wanted to do, and it did it well. Judging it for what it isn't - for what it was never supposed to be - feels unfair. For what it is, there's a lot to love, with no major flaws worth mentioning.

  • @karabearcomics
    @karabearcomics7 ай бұрын

My big problem with the special wasn't the content, but the name. To me, it shouldn't have been named after Jack Russel, but instead focused on the Bloodstone, itself. That way, Jack's inclusion can shock the audience a little, and Elsa can feel less forgotten by the branding. It could have simply been called "Bloodstone", since it's quite evocative already of horror, or could have been called something like "Legacy of the Bloodstone", to really get that old-school horror vibe ("Curse of the Bloodstone" would have been more evocative of them, but I wanted something that fit more with the story). Also, instead of "Marvel Studios Special Presentation", couldn't they have done a more Marvel-tinged branding? "Marvel Spotlight" could have been a nice nod to Werewolf by Night's origins (but maybe not fit with others to fall under the branding), while "Marvel Premiere" could have been a simple one. It wouldn't have to be incredibly obviously a reference to the comics and be called something like "Amazing Fantasy" or the like, since both the previous mentioned still sound like they work for what they were doing as it is. However, we're not likely to see the branding return any time soon, anyways (though come on, it's easy backdoor pilots).

I’m certainly not completely against talking about older films, but there’s two main reasons I don’t focus on them atm - It’s harder to come up with original takes on something that’s been out there decades already, and The audience I’ve cultivated at the moment are fickle enough when it comes to watching _modern_ content - it’d likely be a financially poor decision to make much content on classics at the moment. Of course, I try to make my content choices without thinking solely about the money, but I can’t ignore it completely- things are often fairly tight That being said, I have sometimes drawn in older films as intertexts for analysis - (here’s an example of a Rick and Morty video that reads an episode of the show through Tarkovsky’s Solaris: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKiol9t8ka-0hqw.htmlsi=O-VB4HsARGbQMiZr) and I’m sure, at the very least, you can expect more of this type of thing in the future

I did not get around to a rewatch of the colorization this year, but I did watch it twice last year. I thought it was a good time. Wandavision and FatWS both had some heaviness to them. Had we not had the reference to the Avengers in the opening of WbN, it would have been very difficult to peg it as a part of the larger MCU, or even the time frame it occurred. Everyone I talked to about it enjoyed it. It left me wanting more of Elsa, Jack and Ted. It opens the idea of introducing Greer Grant Nelson as Tigra, or, hear me out, using Howard the Duck some more. Gargoyle is another character they could bring it. There is a lot to mine in terms of Marvel's monsters. I do understand the fatigue of having to watch every single Marvel property in order to get to the next part. My sister wants to see The Marvels but the style of Ms. Marvel did not appeal to her. So she knows Carol and Monica's stories, but not Kamala's which may factor heavily into the movie. Marvel really needs to get F4 and X-Men into development and keep them as separate as possible from what has went on before.

Why is it suddenly style over substance, when marvel takes risks and does a solid classic horror project? Calling marvel style over substance, is a weird criticism when, thats marvel most of the time. And it would be great if marvel did more classic horror projects.

What do you think of the color version they just put on D+? The only reason I can think of that they would do this is to draw in some more-hesitant audiences, but I think it's probably worse off for the movie (although I haven't seen the color version)

My issue with the MCU and any longer-length continuity of any form is simple: sacrificing story for hooks and links later content will connect with. I have no problem with leads being given that other shows or films will grasp and carry on. But it should never be at the expense of the current experience. What good does creating future payoffs do if it causes content fatigue and disinterest in the current story? The way MCU should be handled is a naturalistic continuation, not just teasing cliffhangers. THAT is why Phase 1 worked so well. They left little crumbs to get you curious about later projects, but never made it feel like they left something in the story you had to wait on another film to get resolution or a payoff. THAT is what stingers should be for. A little crumb of what's to come.

They did releash it last year as a surprise test screening at a more indie movie therater. There was showing of different movies each theater and whatever theater you went into you didnt know what you was going to see until the movie started. Surprisingly the people there who where all mostly indie movie head really loved the movie and was surprised it was from Marvel.

To me it just wasn’t scary. Like at all. I remember playing it excited for a horror MCU experience. But idk I didn’t feel anything watching this special. I thought the Guardians Christmas special was so good tho. Unironically probably my favorite Christmas movie of all time. Short special that puts me in a good mood

@4:51. I disagree with this quoted review. What more did he expect to get out of the characters of this special? How much do we know about the heroine of _The Ring_ than the female lead of this short? How much does _Alien_ tell us about the character of Ripley? Practically nothing because most horror films aren't character studies. This sounds like the take of someone looking for something to complain about. "I don't like this thing because it's from the MCU; now, what can I give as a reason?"

I disagree, Marvel shows and movies are not chapters, they are books in a book series. Some better than others, but way more apt than calling them chapters.

Eehh. It just further proves to me how utterly done I am with the MCU. I love horror, I love the Universal Monsters, and Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf By Night are among my favorite Marvel comics from the 70s. And this did nothing for me. It's cool to see Marvel do a little something different but it wasn't enough to make this interesting. Even for an hr long special it drags in the middle with nothing happening after a huge exposition dump in the beginning. Some "violent by MCU standards" action at the end isn't enough to save it. We're so used to copy/paste MCU nonsense we fall head over heels for marginally different mediocrity and act like it's incredible.

Werewolf by Night is a double edged sword for me. Its such a fun stylized romp filled with love and homage, AND it harkens back to the "every mcu film is a different genre" concept. Winter solider being political thriller. Thor dark world being fantasy. Antman being a heist film. But on the other hand, i like it so much that im just disappointed that it will likely be forgotten with the disney reorganization. Im sure the billionaires are pissed at the money theyre losing that would have been used for their 5th yacht. And once the strikes are over, i guarantee there will be some alternative retaliation SOMEHOW, meaning very few things get greenlit. Werewolf by night and Moon knight are two projects that got me super psyched about the idea of a Midnight Sons project, and it seems like thats never gonna happen, or at least not for A LONG time. 😢
