So I finally got round to watching the much requested Wendell and Wild, and I actually had a lot of hype around this. Not only being directed by the legendary Henry Selick, but also bragging a dark story full of mystery elements. Sadly though, those expectations were not met...

I am glad at least the blonde preppy girl didnt turn into a bully or a backstabber "mean girl". Shes just annoying cause her and Kat are not on the same wave link of personalities. When I saw her I groaned cause I thought ok here we go, the popular preppy girls who make fun of the new kid and are bullies to them. But no, she is actually rather pleasant. Annoying, but not bad and does help in the end.

I agree plus she figured out what her parents were up to in fact you could say that the Kaxons are meant to be characters that are meant to show how American prisons function with how the people who own the prisons will usually use the money that they make to pleasure themselves rather than using it to maintain the prison itself and not even allowing inmates to have a chance of reformerty because they are essentially lose money when a prisoner is let out on parole so it would be rather fitting that they end up in one of their own prisons that they owned prior and those inmates they tortured pretty much got their revenge on them

Bc he forces racial commentary into his films over everything else which leads to a movie lacking the necessary meat for a story to be good. He’s a hack writer. He’s only popular bc modern Hollywood loves all that blm shit. And since he openly only hires and writes about black people and refuses anything else, he’s absolutely adored by the producers. My comment from bionicpig’s video on the film: I would’ve liked more scenes with Kat interacting with Wendell & Wild. And having each of the demon brothers representing an aspect of her troubles. So her coming to terms with them and befriending them would help her come to terms with her past. Also I feel like they didn’t need the Klaxons. If they wanted to make a statement on private prisons. They could’ve had Buffalo Belzer stand in that role. Wendell & Wild are in a sort of prison at the beginning.

They’re obsessed with identity politics and it’s why a lot of this movies writing is just bizarre. He’s trying to find ways to make it relevant to certain socially trendy narratives. Also--sorry to play Devil's advocate here--but Sellick may be a director who works BETTER with a leash. With Coraline, he had people overseeing what he did and making decisions (I personally hated the "face lines" in W&W), and it was based on a novel he didn't write. So he had restraints, but was still able to be creative. On W&W...it's all Sellick, for better or for worse. When I first saw the trailer, I was really excited to watch the movie. From the stop motion, the actors, the director, and from what the story seemed to be about, I wanted to see this movie badly. Then when I actually saw it... the stop motion was still fantastic, but the story seemed very strange to me. And the climax was very rushed and preachy from what I remember. I was hoping for a new Coraline from the scariness and story telling, but I was kind of disappointed. Happy to have seen it once, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

I'm a big stop motion nerd, but even with amazing animation, I got bored after about 20 minutes. And I did mean to go back to it, but if a movie can't hook me within the first 15-30 minutes, it's not a good sign.

That is real by the way. MonkeyBone is an adaptation of a comic call *Dark Town by Kaja Blackley.* Selick wanted to make the comic into a stop motion movie but due Studio Interferences with the many changes, the movie becomes Monkey Bone. Like something passion transform into an abomination. There's only a picture of how Selick originality want it in stop motion with all the figures. Sadly I can't share the photo because the bots.

Know what this film actually makes me reminded of? The cgi animated film "9", which also had a very unique dark premise, beautiful animation, interesting lore, but not really a well paced plot or anything resembling extremely good clever humor or shocking twists to keep one interested. In short form, this story was perfect, and it held up even more so, because it lacked dialogue entirely, like Mad God did, and, it had a much smaller cast, telling just about the same gist of the story. The problem /potential of the cinematic version was, now you basically had to add more character archetypes and more plot points, but where does one stop? And if you have too much plot, then establishing key details or obvious travels from one setting to another, have to be cut for time sake- and in some mediums, like a short film, or a comic/graphic novel, or even a video game, these jumps into one new set after another, or infodumps, work fine, because the viewer absorbs this story very differently. But as a film, our brain pads out everything and thus, it gives "9" almost an effect like you are not watching a completed film, but more like a nearly finished rushed one, or, like one of those compulation videos of every cut scene from a videogame, with all the menus, gameplay and footage of boss battles removed. Wendell and Wild had kind of the same problem, but it stings worse because it has an even more complicated plot than 9 has, and just as many characters, and the plot unlike 9's is ironically both more cliched and far LESS so, so... unlike 9's story which is just your typical 'get macguffin, go on epic quest to bring macguffin to the place, save the world' tale, Wendell has you guessing and wondering and TRYING to piece together a mystery, with results that do not leave an emotional impact as much as they ought to, which is the main driving point of any mystery drama. If I cannot get emotional over the stakes in a mystery, then unravelling doesn't matter and the prizes rewarded to us feel cheap and lazy whenever we do solve them.

Finally got round to watching this last night. Been meaning to for ages and this video finally gave me the kick I needed. I agree with a lot of what you said. Some heavy rushing at the end. I basically forgot how Kat said goodbye to her parents until you showed me as there was so much going on. The art style I sort of liked. It was interesting how some of characters where modelled after their voice actors. But personally I don't think I like the design of characters mouths jutting out in weird ways, idk just looks odd, and the caricature inspired designs results with that a bit. One thing I thought was weird was how it took Wendell & Wild about half way in to meet Kat. So it kinda confused me how the film kept saying they're her demons when they barely interact with her. I think with all the plot being crammed in, it made me less and less interested, because none got enough time to breathe. As some of the comments I saw said, it would've worked so much better as a TV show. You could've had more mystery around the janitor and the nun, more of Kat adjusting to the school and using her powers. Yeah overall a little weak, but with some fun animation and colours as well as some good topics brought up. The non-reforming prisons and capitalist corporations were decent. I thought Rhaoul being trans was depicted well, it was firmly established that he is, but didn't harp on about it through the rest of the film. Great video as usual!

Wendell and Wilde did not follow the Pixar method of storytelling - "Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating". That's why the resolution fell flat, it was a coincidence that all the characters were where they were at the end. The artist didn't purposely lead the giant demon to the roofs to see the picture he did, it just so happened that he was there where he was. Oh, and it so happened that all demons captured in the jars were his kids. I find it a shame, I really wanted to like this movie. I still love the look of this movie, just the story was really weak.

I really wish you’d do a video on the 2015 stop motion animated movie Anomalisa. It was written and co-directed by Charlie Kaufman (the guy who wrote Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind), and it’s not really dark or scary, apart from one scene that’s mildly creepy, but it’s definitely not for kids because there’s swearing, nudity and sex in it. I think you’d like it because of those mature elements even though it’s not on par with the movies you usually talk about in your videos in terms of darkness or scariness.

The Reveal that the Caretaker has all of Belzer's Children in Jars, it literally got me Dumbfounded. If I found out Humans holding my children as Hostages in Jars I would be piss off. Kat is unlikable but she's not insufferable. And the scenes do work of her trauma, and we show how she grew up fighting other kids ends make her end up into a delinquent. It does work. I understand her. Kat shuts off Raúl with the “They Died” Line and Raúl was like Whoooa. That plays interested in the mysterious person trope. I agree the Optimistic And Cynic dynamic always work. Starfire and Raven, Goku And Vegeta, Spongebob and Squidward, Wednesday and the Werewolf girl that I don't know her name I didn't watch Netflix Wednesday. Plus it would be more organic for Siobhan being Interested in Kat because she just want to be Kat's Friend. Or the Fact Kat saved Siobhan's life by pushing her away from the falling Brick. The Animation is great but the how the story is, it a meh for me. I wonder what the Original Book of Wendell and Wild is like. I wonder if it's different from the movie. Oh yeah Steve, You never mentioned Father Bests. He wants vengeance for the Klaxons killing him. And he died later. So that was pointless.

It felt like the writers had too many ideas and instead of picking one or two, they tried to implement every idea but couldn't fully develop any of them within the timeframe of the movie. It's kinda sad since the animation is really good and the character designs were unique. It had alot of potential but the writing of a movie can make or break it

I never felt the move was bad. Just too much ambition killed it off. And made it forgettable. I never watched it. Just because the animation is good. Doesn’t mean the story will be. And vice Versa with just because animation bad. Doesn’t mean story bad. If your gonna make a series. Focus more on writing than animating but still make the animation as good as possible. be it stop motion/ drawn etc… (I’m only talking about animation. And no I haven’t made an animation series yet. So my advice may not be that good.)

Like I fully understand the social commentary they were making and I do think it's important to talk about but yeah it was one too many things. Could've been an offhanded remark that is on the growing list of inhumane actions that helps the daughter see just how terrible her parents are. This could've been better with either less ideas to suit the length or a mini series type length to give the ideas room to breath

I couldn't say how feasible this would be, considering the costs and nature of creating series, but I feel as though this movie could've benefited from being a series instead. It would allow for far more character and plot development than a movie allows in addition to not feeling anywhere near as rushed. Series can also allow for more varied plots, whereas in a movie so much going on can end up feeling overwhelming and unfocused very easily. I'd say that the biggest flaws come down to there not really being enough time, this would rectify that, if of course done correctly.
