This is probably one of the most unique entries I've looked at, a 2004 Danish film called Strings. Which not only utilises marionettes on a magnificent technical level, but also has one of the most creative takes to incorporate the marionettes into the world itself.

The concept of them knowing their strings exist, not knowing where they descend from, is a really cool touch. Gives the strings a religious significance, even if they're never treated with such reverence.
Genndy Tartakovsky's PRIMAL
I always loved the scene where the Mom comes in to find her children all tangled up together while they're giggling. It gives the whole world a more organic feeling even if I was just a scene.
I’m so glad this is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This may have some the most creative puppetry I’ve ever seen in a movie and it’s dark and somewhat gothic atmosphere definitely helps with that
I'd recommend the anime film "Perfect Blue " because it DOES NOT hold back on the mind fustercluck with depicting the main protagonist slowly losing touch with reality following a string of murders relating to her acting career after retiring from the idol industry 😳
Right out of the gate it reminds me of the Dark Crystal with the movements, and the eyes, and the overall serious and somber tone and aesthetic. The Dark Crystal was my absolute favorite movie growing up, so it's nice to see something similar here
Strings is basically the serious older brother to Team America.
Puppetry needs more recognition
Can't stop thinking about how many times they had to fix the strings because they got tangled during production, that was def painful both mentally and physically
I remember stumbling across this in a 4 pack of DVDs at Biglots waaay back in like 2009. So glad I got it, it's such a neat movie. You forgot to mention that even their weapons and combat are all about cutting strings! The swords have that hook to better cut a string, instead of stab a body. I found all the attention to detail utterly fascinating.
There's one thing I love about this film that makes it stand out from any other movie containing puppets, and that's the fact that the strings are so prominent. Something about it I really like, they COULD have used fishing wire type strings that everyone else uses but they chose to use thick strings to enhance the experience
I had a nightmare like this...
I have to say, the voice acting for the Danish is crazy.
Can you do one on Wolfwalkers? It may not be very dark but is still rather entertaining, and does, at certain points, deal with certain themes such as murder, witchcraft, death on screen, hunting, and slavery in a way. Plus the animation is awesome.
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie and being blown away by how no marionette movie before or since had made the strings part of the world's lore. It's prty creative.
It's a shame that this form of art that not many people do anymore.
Artistic and strangely creepy, especially for 2004 this looked like it was made a couple years ago.
Not only does it play puppets straight, which isn't really done, they lean into the puppetry by having the strings be important
I love how they actually incorporate the strings as a crucial part of the story. One of the best things about this movie.
