Wen 56203i Inverter Generator Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I review a Wen 56203i inverter generator (amzn.to/3vEfDRN) I purchased, manufactured in 7/2020. I give you a tour of the generator internals, load it up with a heat gun, a 1+ ton portable AC, show you the waveform on an oscilloscope and then change the break-in oil

    This is an awesome little inverter generator. I've had mine for a couple of years now and it has served us during many outages. Always starts up and its record was 14 hours in eco-mode with about 30% average load! (much higher than its factory rated runtime...and beyond the recommended oil change interval, heh...oil was changed immediately after that specific run and it was clean)! It has no problems keeping our fridge, several lights (LEDs of course), electric heater, and entire home entertainment setup going during outages. Punches above its weight!

    Yeah it's an awesome little machine! In my case as soon as I bought my first generator the power never went out... Of course. I do use it from time to time in remote locations where power is unavailable or difficult to get to, to run tools and such and it has never let me down.

    I to have the same generator and it is awesome I have ran it more than 12 hrs a day everyday now for 9 months straight and it has never failed to even start on the first pull. I have adjusted the valves 3 different times and the I checked it after 159 hrs and it is still perfect and then I checked it again after another 150 hrs and it is still perfect so after 3 valve adjustments at around the 150 hr mark you do not have adjust the valve lash anymore. This is by far the best generator i the world. Mine runs for 14 to 14.5 hrs on 1 tank of gas. I have always changed to oil and added STP original oil treatment the blue bottle it reads for conventional or synthetic oil. I have always kept the air filter clean and lubed with K&N air filter oil. I have had several Honda IE 2000 and this Wen is a far better generator the fuel gauge is right on top where you can read it as you fill it and the oil changes are super easy and super clean and simple his is the best designed generator with general maintenance in mind. the engine is a Yamaha engine a clone engine.

    Great review and mechanical look! Thank you! I just bought this exact generator, and I agree, am overall very impressed with it, especially considering the low cost. I have the Yamaha EF2000is generator with several THOUSAND hours of use on it. The crankshaft oil seal failed, and I will be repairing it when I can get the time, but needed a gen immediately in the interim so I bought this WEN. It will be interesting to see how it holds up for durability. From the performance standpoint it seems to match the Yamaha in nearly every respect. Just got back from a long weekend ice fishing with an average 200 watt load, and this new WEN ran a full 12 hours on a full tank of gas.

    Thank you! I had a chance to use it last weekend at my daughter's birthday party. I intended to use it to power a bounce house blower, but the WEN wouldn't handle it. To be fair, it was a very large bounce house and the blower appeared to be a 1/2 - 1 HP PSC motor. I tried "feathering it" on, and the WEN kept on going into overload. I eventually gave up, drove home, and grabbed one of my open-frame generators which handled the load no problem. I was a little bit surprised that the WEN wouldn't handle it, since it started my 1+ ton portable AC, but I suppose that the PSC blower motor, with the mass of the fan attached, kept the WEN in overload for too long, whereas the portable AC only kept it in overload for a second or so.

    I've been trying to find out what grounding is needed on this generator. It has a post to connect a ground but everywhere I go to get advice they're saying at least a 4 ft grounding rod needs to be used. I camp in the Rocky Mountains so good luck with that. Can't imagine people pounding in grounding rods in stone while on camping trips. I'm thinking its required if connecting to a home but for tent camping not so much. Do you know?

    It is probably best to ground any portable generator that is being used for anything that isn't truly temporary use. This site does a pretty good job of explaining why: www.jadelearning.com/blog/grounding-requirements-for-portable-generators/

    I wonder if your heat gun is actually drawing more power on that setting because the heating element isn't being cooled down as much as on high? Heat is resistance.

  • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC

    I suspect the heat gun is using PWM (pulse width modulation) to pulse the heating element on and off really quickly to control heat output.

    Sorry bud but they don't make aluminum bores if it was aluminum there would be a cast iron sleeve pressed into it. It wouldn't last a month if it was an aluminum bore. There's a possibility it could be aluminum with a nikasiil plate

  • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC

    @JoesGarageProductionsLLC

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is just a generic term that refers to anything that doesn't have that cast iron sleeve. Most of the homeowner grade equipment these days doesn't have that sleeve and those engines are typically good for 200 or 300 hours. If they plate them I'm not sure what they plate them with but the point is they don't have the cast iron sleeve... You would be hard-pressed to find a commercial grade motor of any kind that doesn't have the cast iron sleeve

  • @keithalexander36

    @keithalexander36

    Жыл бұрын

    nikasiil bore will outlast the piston rings and a soft iron bore for sure. that's why we don't use cast iron in MX race bikes anymore because aluminum cylinders with nikasiil coating last much longer (when done right) and transfers heat much better.

    Is a good method to level this generator when your ground is uneven?

  • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC

    @JoesGarageProductionsLLC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ideally, yes, primarily to prevent a lack-of-lubrication situation. The oil in the crankcase will always level itself with the ground and if the ground is too far out of level, it is possible that oil would not be stirred up by the dipper/oil slinger on the connecting rod. This could lead to engine failure. I'd imagine the ground would have to be pretty far out-of-level for this to happen, though.

  • @tomkerrigan3020

    Thanks, Joe. My concern is the fuel flow from the tank. Since the ground is uneven I use a small round level next to the gas cap and position the generator so the bubble is centered in the level. Would this method keep the generator running until it runs dry?
