Buying an Inverter Generator

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

After going through the freeze of February 2021 in Houston, Texas, I decided to finally get a generator. This is a 2-part video. Part 1 is an unboxing of my new WEN Generator . Part 2 explains why I chose this generator, added accessories, setting it up / starting it up, and the total cost involved.
One thing I failed to mention in this video is why I chose an inverter generator over a regular generator. While a regular generator gives you higher wattage at a cheaper price, I chose an inverter style generator due to their physical size, how quiet they are, how clean the power is, and how little gas they use compared to a standard generator.
WEN 56235i Specs:
2350 surge watts and 1900 rated watts of clean power for safe charging of sensitive electronics
Fuel shutoff
(2) three-prong 120V receptacles, (1) 12V DC receptacle, (2) 5V USB ports, and a two-year warranty
Products seen in this video:

I bought a Wen as well after the Texas freeze. I bought an hour meter and the magnetic dipstick also. I got the 56225i which is 2250 watts and 1800 watts respectively, slightly smaller than yours. For others that are considering buying a Wen, you may get a better value buying directly from their website. Free shipping and no tax and generator sales every once in a while. Mine was $385 from Wen on sale. On Amazon currently it is $452 not including tax. I did a ~1 hour break-in in regular mode, wiped the small amount of shavings from dipstick, and changed the oil. I also noticed a slight miss when running so I gapped the spark plug and the miss was gone. Also on my particular model there is a rubber cap to access the spark plug. I was able to run the hour meter wire through that hole and close the rubber cap around it, and used double sided gorilla tape to mount the meter itself, so no drilling into the case.

That Texas freeze was no joke! That's a good idea checking the Wen site for sales. I opted the Amazon route mainly for the added Asurion warranty. Good Luck with your Wen!

Thanks for the maintenance log pdf! So I'm doing pretty much the same with mine, only I am installing an ngk spark plug, lubricating the cylinder with Marvel mystery oil, and putting anti-seize compound on the threads. I'll probably install my hour meter where you did. Great review, and helpful information:)

Your most welcome and I appreciate the kind words! I plan on getting an NGK plug soon after the initial break in period and the anti-seize is a good idea. On the hour meter, make sure the screws don't go into the gas tank!

Hello all...Well I got around to installing the hours meter...and it works and was very easy to do...many thanks for the help....but I installed the meter on the right side of the spark plug door, as I did not want it too close the gas tank...afraid the small screws might be a problem for the tank. I have pictures, but don't know how to get them here. I ran the ginny for about 20 minutes...with no problems.... thanks again.

  • @MonkeyWoodworks

If it were me.. I would not skip running it every month or two. I only say that because I had a friend who had one "Winter prepped" for long term storage. And when he needed it the most it would not start and had to take it in to be serviced. It was a different brand and model but it was still a small engine generator like this one. A similar situation happened to my folks. However, if you're planning on doing that I believe the best approach is to completely drain the fuel from the tank and carburetor. You can find more info online for winter storage of a portable generator. I keep a gas can of Ethanol free gas treated with sta-bil storage additive and run my generator every month for thirty min using that fuel. When the 30min is up, I shut off the fuel supply to the carburetor to let it die on its own, top off the generator's tank so it stays full and put it away until next month.

I also live in the Houston area and it’s telling me that I need to do 5-30 the oil but I want to use the all that you’re using but I just wanted to know why you’re using 10-30 I have a brand new when I haven’t started it up yet I’ve got the unleaded gas at Buckys without the ethanol I’ve got the metal dipstick but I want to know why what why do you prefer 10-30 synthetic oil over 5-30 synthetic this week and I plan on starting it up and thank you for the log I have made one also. I bought the same size inverter generator and I also bought the wind 4750 electric start generator Being a grandmother I do not want to get caught like we did in this Texas freeze last year or any other hurricane and I appreciate the all the videos but I will be Starting both my generators up for the first time this weekend and again thank you so much for the videos

Honestly you can use either one I believe. I have always used 10-30 full synthetic in my small engines so I went with that. The 10-30 is a little thicker in cold weather than the 5-30. The oil type was not an issue when had warranty work on it. I told them what I was using and they didn't seem to mind.

@@MonkeyWoodworks Thanks for the reply. I really like the security of knowing my family will have power incase of a regional outage, as during the big freeze of 21 ha ha, hurricanes or whatever disaster is looming. I got a whole house generac and natural gas tap installed on the gas meter. So as long as they don't cut off the gas I have endless emergency power , and nat gas at home. My work trailer has a 3800 watt generator and 100 gallons of water that pumps on demand. But the 3800 is too loud, and heavy to move easily. In comes the inverter generator I only need to run one power tool at a time and a fan or light sometimes. Thinking about the Wen 2350W. Its small size light weight, low fuel consumption, electrical specifications, and low price point make it seem like the perfect solution to my power problem. Great ROI will pay for it's self in one job. Have two other Wen tools an angle grinder, and a rotary polisher both work as advertised and are comfortable to use. Thanks for the reply and information. Good luck with your channel.

I think the rated output is 1900 watts. An 80cc engine is very small for that kind of load. That means it has to run at a very high rpm to put that power out. I'm sure that will work as long as you don't load it up much or expect too many hours out of it. There is a reason why the Honda eu2200i has an engine with 50% more cc's while putting out only 1800 watts. Important to remember that you don't get something for nothing.

Dont pour oil in the cylinder it will bend a valve

  • @dieseldawg7132

    @dieseldawg7132

    Ай бұрын

You would have to have quite a bit of oil to cause the valve to bend usually when something hydrolocks it’s the piston that will lock but you need a substantial amount of oil or fuel…. I always put a few drops on my piston rings when breaking the engine in

Well hello neighbor lol. That was definitely some brutal times and pray I don't have to go through that again! That plastidip isn't a bad idea however I haven't really had an issue with it since I only change the oil after it's been a 100% cooled down. Plus I think I will leave mine alone so that I do not block some of the heat dissipation the aluminum dipstick allows.
