Well Drilling Shaft Repair 1

Ойын-сауық

In this video series I have to repair a worn gearbox shaft that I machined several years back. I also have to machine a couple new parts to go along with the shaft. In this video I explain the repairs needed, and get started on the shaft collar.
And for fun I show and tell my GoPro camera mount.

It's nice to have your dog around the shop. I appreciate your comments about allowing work pieces to cool before making final cuts. You've done it in several episodes thus far. Thanks for them, thanks for this and all the videos. I learn something in every one. Glad to know Stella.s name. Coldwarmotors' poodle is also a Stella.

It is an original Multifix tool post, but was sold through Enco. They even stamp there name and size on the top plate. I have them on both of my lathes. In my opinion, one of the best tool posts out there. Its also known as "40 position" tool post. You can drop the holder down onto it in 40 different positions, or every 9 degrees.

Adam I was looking at your 3 jaws and we had a old one too and we kinda save it by machining the jaws with à ceramic insert. The way you do it, you put a ring on the last jaw mark and tight the chuck on it, machine slowly your jaws .001" at a time until it cleans out. After finish chuck the ring inside the hole and machine the last jaw mark deeper than the other. Work well for me I tried it a few time. Rince and repeat.

Cool video. Great quick work fabricating the collar. Since I am very new to creating a hobby shop in the garage with a 12" by 36" lathe, I see that you increase the boor pretty fast with those great drills. I have nothing bigger that a 5/8" drill. With lots of time, could I just increase the bore with the boring bar or is their a distinct advantage to investing in larger Morse taper drills for the tail stock?

Hello Paul, are you from Italy? About the coolant, the lathe was equipped with a full coolant system but the pump no longer works. I have plans to one day install a Little Giant Pump, i do still have the coolant spout that bolts to the carriage too. The chuck jaws do need some attention, but I have plans to buy a new 4-jaw and 3-jaw chuck in the near future.

As always great videos! I have a question though. When you got the "chips" as one long string it is dangerous because it can get tangled in everything and cut you right? You mention those kinds of chips should be avoided. How do you avoid them? increase or decrease speed? change feed rate? or is it the metal it self that is to blame and then you just have to be extra carefull?

Adam, I would like a better view of your camera mount. The shop lighting made it hard to see the details of the mount. Also why was solid stock chosen for the tube, was it because of high torsional forces on the tube during operation of the tube?

If you don’t start producing at least six project videos per day I’m going to have to stop ‘Abom79 binging’ in about three weeks..(that is a bad thing!).. I get the need for vacations and days off so that means just 8 project videos per day so you can get adequate time off and rest..work for you? If you can’t work that out I will have to actually go outside and work in my own shop! (Nobody wants THAT!)
