Well Drilling Shaft Repair 2

Ойын-сауық

In this video I focus mainly on the the bearing removal and how I plan to weld up the two keways. I was actually having some fun heating up the bearing and trying to knock it off.

Love watching you work. I have had to remove bearings in difficult situations, my altime favorite one was a field repair on a hay baler, I was young (early 20s) all I had was a hammer and punch, no way to get behind it to beat it off no way to heat it up, once I got the outer part off I thought Bearing races are hard steel, I could get a good swing at the top so I hit it with the hammer several times hard and there was a line running front to back, it slid off with no effort then, ran some Emory cloth over it and slid the new one on.

Sure I could have welded it up completely, but I was afraid with that much heat I may have warped the shaft. I decided that plugging the slot and having one good weld bead around it would make it less likely to bend. The fix worked out good and it will work fine.

Here is a person gifted with brilliant practical logic and a great talent for choosing his method of solving the problem. It is such a pity that many people have not got the slightest idea of the high intelligence that is applied in the silent and hidden functions that are found in the workshops that helps industry deliver all our home comforts through the machines this gentleman works on. Sir, my heartiest congratulations on your work. You certainly deserve that moment of triumph at 8:21. Few would understand your feelings at that moment. Again congratulations. All developed countries are built on people who can be as practical as this gentleman. When people like this gentleman are not respected, any empire will fall and the richness moves on to another country who respect such people.

Nice job getting that bearing race off. I'm really enjoying your channel. Neat to see some of your shop techniques in action over here. I also enjoy your posts over at PM where I have followed your threads for some time.

Its a good thing on jobs like this that nobody's interested in trying to salvage the bearing, since you basically had to effectively destroy the thing with that heating to get it off! XD Favorite part of this was the first half where you wound up with first a greasy mess from all the dang grease still left in the bearing and seeing the bearing 'in flames'! XD

I love how you dropped the bearing. You were wearing the wrong type of glasses! Watching the flame without proper protection for your eyes is not a good idea to show to the 35214 viewers (thus far) of this video. I learned about eye protection the hard way when I got rust in my eyes. My eyes were bandaged for a week.

Adam, that was a very clever idea to apply very localized heat to expand the inner bearing race. I must admit I was wondering what you would try next if that didn't work.

one silly question...! heating won't change the steel properties? i'm guessing that it only changes if its above a certain temperature that you can see by the colour, right!!? and what type of steel is used for shafts? thanks a lot...

This may be a dumb question but why not fill the keyway with weld, it would be more durable than cold rolled right and then turn it on the lathe?
