Welcome to the Dragon Kingdom || Bhutan Travel Vlog (Part 1)

Welcome to the Dragon Kingdom of Bhutan! Thanks to Flying Fox Bhutan (www.flyingfoxbhutan.com) for giving me a 3 day tour around this beautiful kingdom. In my first episode, we learn about Bhutanese culture, visit the worlds largest sitting Buddha, see the national animal, Takin, visit a monastery for women, and check out the local markets of Thimphu. Stay tuned for more episodes to come!
Tucked away deep in the Himalayas, landlocked between the worlds two largest countries is the small kingdom of Bhutan. The land of Dragons. Boasting the worlds happiest people and surrounded by natural beauty this nation of less than a million people remains a mystery to most of the world. A complicated visa and expensive daily tourism fee makes it even more elusive. But the high value, low volume tourism model intrigued me allowing me to escape into this world of peace and brought back a sense of true discovery. This is day 1 of my 3 day adventure with Flying Fox Bhutan, and here’s how it went…

When i learn that Bhutan's state religion is Vajrayana Buddhism, then I believe this is a mystical country. Watching the beauty gives me an impression of its beauty. Indeed, it's beautiful.

How can a country be “mystical”? It’s a star religion, meaning it’s concerns are governmental and political. It’s sociology, not mysticism.

Not many people know but India tried to gobble up Bhutan in the early 1990s but failed. Sikkim wasn't so lucky. Sikkim is a neighbor of Bhutan very much like Bhutan but even smaller. Sikkim was gobbled up by India in 1975. Sikkim was a neighbor of China for several hundreds of years. In the 18th century Sikkim was briefly overran by the Gurkhas and the Sikkimese king fled to China and asked for help. China at the time was at the height of its power and the Qianlong emperor sent an expedition force to expel the Gurkhas and restored Sikkim sovereignty and independence. Sikkim was left unmolested for the next several hundred years until it was gobbled up by India in 1975. Free Sikkim.

Awesome video. I've always wanted to visit but the prices are so high to travel to Bhutan that I hadn't - thanks for the vicarious joy of visiting Bhutan! My only quibble was the choice of background music for part of the video. the chant (om namah shivaya) is decidedly Hindu (a religion I practice) even though the visuals are Buddhist. Wish you'd picked a Buddhist chant / religious music - would've added to the narrative.

  • @thetravelingzam

It is! I do believe they have decreased the price slightly since I have been there but still makes it tough to visit for most people :/

Agree it is a beautiful video and absolutely agree on the music choice bit! Nothing to do with Bhutan and threw me off a tad. So much so that I was sure someone had picked this up in the comments too, so I made a Control + F search on the page with "music" and, sure enough, here is your comment! Pity because the video, except for that, is praiseworthy.

It's great to see the beautiful country of Bhutan, but the background music doesn't suit well as all these are Indian devotion songs or instruments. When you are showing Bhutan, Bhutanese devotional songs or instruments will suit well. That is my suggestion.
