Weird Fighting Games - The Worst Mortal Kombat

Ойындар

Episode 9: Mortal Kombat (Game Boy)
On this episode of weird fighting games we look at what is quite possibly the worst yet impressive port of the all time classic Mortal Kombat. Will the game provide an authentic experience or is it just a soulless cash grab?
Music Used:
Rooftop (Day Dawn) - Mortal Kombat 9
The courtyard - Mortal Kombat 9
Troublesome visitor - Melty Blood
This was a fun episode to do and I didn't go over 15 minutes! That made editing a lot easier this time around. Originally this video was going to cover all 4 game boy mortal kombat games but while writing I found it redundant so I focused on the original as I found it the most interesting. I hope you didn't mind the Johnny Cage rant. This will be the last weird fighting games until the Halloween Special. I'd like my next video to be Type-moon but we shall see where fate takes me I have lots of ideas. I can say there is one or two discussion videos in the future because I feel like talking. IDK if I'll make a MK1 video since I'm not paying $110 for "early access" and I think it'd be redundant with the year in review but who knows I might have something interesting to say about it as I am a big MK fan. I hope you enjoyed the video and I hope you have a good day/night/weekend/new year. Thanks for reading I truly apricate it!!!!!!!!
MK hot takes:
MK2 is the best classic game, the 3D games are broken but good and I'm happy we're getting more representation, the Kombat Kids suck, Jaqui and Cassy are the most boring characters ever, MKX's story mode is a travesty worse than MK11, Reptile reptile is cool but human reptile is better, The male characters get the better costumes and designs AKA drip, Johnny Cage is the best, the MK movie is a good adaptation, MK2 and 3 Shang look bad, Mk9 was one of if no the best fighting game reboots ever, Fatalities are better when they are a bit silly and creative, a lot of people hat MK because it's different and won't put the time in b/c it's not street fighter/ anime fighter/ tekken, Stryker is cool because he's just some guy, they need to stop putting guest characters in MK they pollute the roster and amount to nothing but wacky intro dialog vids on KZread that is their legacy, Kotal Khan sucks, Erron black is boring, NRS puts the most effort into their fighting games, The animations suck but it's always been like that and I love the dumb looking kicks idk why people can hate on those, We haven't had a good new villain in MK since Onaga, Scorpion is better than sub zero, injustice is a waste of time mk is where it's at, 3D era had some really bad costumes for both men and women, MK vs SF would suck they play nothing alike and would be like oil and fire, Mk is the best looking fighting game and Melina over katana any day

Good video, I really feel your overall speaking and presentation have improved recently and I look forward to more stuff from you. Personally I don't love MK but I do acknowledge that as an overall package/product NRS does do a lot right with the newer ones, and the older ones were among the first fighting games I ever touched as a kid before I actually knew how to play them so they do retain a soft spot for me, as crummy/kusoge as they are. As an actual competitive fighting game it's definitely not for me but 99% of people who buy MK are doing so to maybe play the story mode and watch the fatalities or play it at a party while drunk or something, and I think for that audience it does pretty much everything right.

Thanks. I think a lot of people owe it to mortal kombat for introducing them to fighting games. I think competitive mk is interesting because they are an anomaly. In some ways they’re a lot like the smash bros community, not a lot of player crossovers and having their own take on fighting mechanics. It’s the only fighter where competitive players are the minority when it comes to the fgc. But that makes sense because NRS always makes sure every facet of their community gets something. I’ve got conflicting feelings with mortal kombat, on one hand I love the characters and lore, on the other hand despite being a 2D fighter it feels extremely foreign. And I feel like that’s a common sentiment among fighting game players and why so many people in the fgc don’t play NRS. Honestly I could have a whole discussion video about NRS and the fgc

"Worst fatalities" you say? Just wait until you see MK4 on the Game Boy Color. Btw, the Game Boy has a very interesting line up of fighting games, stuff like SF and MK were trash but ports like KOF 95 got creative and turned out solid, also has arguably the best version of Battle Arena Toshinden.

Portable fighting games have always been interesting to me. I think the neo geo pocket did them the best. I have played mk4 on game boy and originally I was going to talk about mk1-4 but I’ll save mk4 for another episode because that game interests me the most I find it very peculiar. Mk2 game boy is good mk3 game boy has the same problems as mk1 gb. Don’t be surprised if you see me talk about more portable fighters in the future.

I'm pretty sure he was supposed to have a cockney accent but Midway/NRS misinterpreted it as Australian.

I don’t like Mortal Kombat because it seems to leave its fighting and balance in the dust in favor of “being cool” but not cool in a cool way but cool in a “your 11 year old immature little cousin and 16 year old shithead older brother love acting like they’re extremely adult by playing nothing but this and COD” It’s like a very lowest common denominator kinda FG. Edit: NRS puts THE MOST effort into their fighting games!? Can I please get some kind of elaboration here? Injustice and MK bore the fuck out of me. People shit on Melty for being dripless but somehow leave MK out of that discussion???

People tend to like it's story modes but tbh a lot of the modern NRS story modes seem painfully generic.

Back in the 90's every fighting game was broken and jank, MK just had a different approach to the genre, games like UMK3 were mechanically very deep. I wish MK would go back to the old martial arts movie/comic book inspired style, NRS' "ultra realism" does nothing for me.

Not every fighting game needs to be fgc compliant. It's a great casual fighter and that's why everyone likes it and it sells millions.

@throwawaydetective9080 I don’t think they leave balance in the dust but it does seem like the balancing team has favorites at least it felt that way in MK11. They also like to put crazy stuff in their games like hard to avoid unblockables for example. I don’t think they’re trying to be cool, NRS games play by their own rules and don’t necessarily conform to fighting game standards but that’s how it’s always been with mortal kombat. I don’t agree with the lowest common denominator idea, mortal kombat knows their audience and it’s not hardcore fighting game fans it’s the average consumer and they play to that base well. It can’t just be 11 and 16 year olds buying millions upon millions of copies of each new mortal kombat. NRS put the most effort into their fighting games. Each game launches with around 25 characters a high number when compared to any other fighter. Sf5 had 16, sf6 has 18, and lumina had 14. The only games that match this are KOF and Tekken but both reuse assets from previous entries while returning characters in mortal kombat are usually changed in some way, Rain for example is a complete different character in MK1 compared to mk11. Each NRS game has had a feature length fully animated story. Each NRS game has some new features to shake things up injustice 2 had gear and challenge towers, MKX had factions and variations , MK11 had the AI battles and kombat league . They always make sure their is a plethora of single player content and online content with kombat league. Each game has a large Amount costumes and colors. Each game after injustice improves upon the graphics to an insane degree. The stages are always chalk full of detail. NRS always go all out with their fighting games that other developers have only started to match now. NRS games do have their faults with janky animations amoung other things but they put 200% behind every title and deliver fighting games full of content for any type of player regardless if you like how the game plays or not. I don’t know what drip has to do with anything related to the effort of NRS.

@GenghisConnThr333 I want that too the classic cameos look so good in HD. I would really love it if they went back and remade MK trilogy with faithful designs they just look so good I think they’re all going in the right direction now after Mortal Kombat 11 at least, which was a special forces fest.
