I always picked Ryu over Ken as a kid actually, because he seemed more focused, dedicated, and had more discipline. To my child brain that somehow meant he was more powerful.

I always picked Ken because even as a kid, I understood why Ken was an actual champion and Ryu was always one step behind................. Ken smiled. Mary Sue writing is what's making modern SF fans even pretend that Ryu wins, take out that Satsui no plot armor and Mr. Focused, Dedicated, and Disciplined gets washed up by his friend who actually enjoys life and doesn't make fighting his ENTIRE personality. A lot of people can learn from Ryu and Ken's relationship lol

The exclusion of the XMvSF select screen is absolutely CRIMINAL but excellent video!

KoF94 countries aren't where the characters are from, but where their stages are. And some still make a bit of sense, Andy went to Italy to train in FF2, so Terry and Joe could be pretty much visiting him when they got the invite. Athena too, she's Japanese but her master and her best friend are Chinese, so she train in China.

As I said in my comment, I think the Art of Fighting team represents Mexico because Robert is possibly half Mexican, I mean, García is not an Italian surname and Art of Fighting 3, which came 2 years after KoF '94, took place in Mexico

I actually really enjoy the way some 3D fighters (or at least ones with 3D character models) are embracing what makes them unique and utilizing their strengths in ways they couldn't with 2D sprites. I love SF6's character select for how much they're able to tell you about the character not just by how they look but how they move, how they interact with the environment around them. It just drips with a fresh kind of style, and I love it.

Red and blue has alway been the colors of player one and player two thats why. Look at contra or raiden games or double dragon and so on. So thats my guess

two things i like from 03 is 03 Robert, and actually being able to tag with your teammates Robert didn't last a 2nd game, he's technically nonexistent in XI and the tag system was never revisited after XI, which is a letdown

Fatal Fury 3's character select is a reference to Fatal Fury 1's character select screen, which is similar, but only has 3 characters another one with this style is Dragon Ball Ultimate Battle 22, which takes the concept to the extreme, especially when you unlock the secret characters

In Fatal fury 3 you can also unlock the three bosses (Yamazaki and the Jin twins) and they are added to the "family picture". Well, that's in the Neogeo CD version only but can be accessed in the MVS with dipcodes. As for Fatal Fury 1, they did the same with Fatal Fury 2. Fatal Fury 3 being "cooler" than the two previous canon titles.

@@silent.revolution2168 you're right, i forgot the Arcade version of FF2 chracter select had the same style as 1&3, for the longest time i only remembered the 16 Bit console version, which looks more like SF2's character select screen(with sprites replacing portrait)

Fatal Fury 3 character select screen is the best I've ever seen. Everything fit just right and that atmosphere is just magic.

I'd say Real Bout 2: The Newcomers has the best visual presentation out of all the classic Fatal Fury games (by classic I mean that it still had the lane system). It's a shame that the game doesn't have any pre-fight interactions between characters or win quotes However; I think that City of the Wolves seems to evoke some of the visuals from games like Real Bout Special/2, not just Mark of the Wolves. I hope that means we'll see some of the pre-MotW characters like Rick Strowd and Li Xiangfei

I do have some bad character select screens examples but I didn’t include them in the video because I felt like it would be weird to be talking about games from the 90s and 2000s and then jump to the late 2010s. I’ll for sure cover them in part 2

The only bad character select screen I can think about is the one from the Atari Jaguar game, Kasumi Ninja. If remember correctly, you have to move in a first-person perspective and choose among different statues that represented the characters. The game itself was a Mortal Kombat clone, but I think the first-person thing was another attempt at copying Wolfenstein and Doom, two other popular titles from the same era

I had a great time watching this. Character select screens can absolutely have an impact on how I feel about a game. I would definitely love to see a part 2.

If you do a part two, Tekken, Soul Calibur, MK, KI would be a good place to start, though there's also Guilty Gear as well.

Another thing I like about the Kof98 character select is that the bottom 3 teams, Team Yagami, Team Masters and American Sports Team are the mini bosses before fighting O. Rugal!

On the neo geo cd version, after you beat the game, you can input the boss code. This makes Yamazaki, Chon Su, and Chon Rei stand at the bar as well. Also, don't worry, the Jin brothers, while small, are old enough to drink😂.

Honestly melry blood actress again current code has one of the best charachter select screens. First, the theme is so fitting, it feels lika a hype verson of the original tsukihime ost. Background with all the flying texts, black and red color contrast perfectly with the characters, especially when you select them.

I’ve never played turtles tournament fighter I’ll have to check it out. Darkstalkers are on the list for part 2 and I’ll consider pocket fighter.

I'm surprised Fatal Fury 1 and 2 (not special) wasn't mentioned. Same for the UM versions of KOF 98/2002. Also Capcom vs SNK 1 and SVC Chaos.

Great video. I do think the Street Fighter 3 New Generation character select and Vs Screen is GORGEOUS. The illustrations for the characters are some of the best in the whole franchise. But I'd be interested in your take on the CvS1 character select. The UI of CvS1 and 2 are two of the most creative in fighting game history, imo.

SNK biggest issue with KOF it's probably the size of the roster, if do it right you get an all time classic character select screen, but it's easier to do it wrong, since you have to group all of them in a way that looks cool while still showing their portraits. Amazing video btw, it definitely needs a part 2, Jojo Heritage to the Future and Guilty Gear definitely needs some mentions

I agree, I like the fatal fury 3 design of character select screens like teenage mutant Ninja turtles tournament fighter on SNES and That one DBZ fighting game. I just like any character select screen where The characters are just idle and living their life, like the camera walks into a bar and picks one of the patrons, or like picking your Starfighter in Star Wars what rogue squadron

Man, we definitely need a part 2! Soul Calibur alone could get its own video - even the less popular entries in the series have some absolute bangers (I think 5 might actually have the best one in the entire series). Anime games like UNIEL and P4A also have some extremely soulful select screens.

14:54 Glad to find another person who likes the artstyle of KOF 2001 😄 I also like the music of the Character Select Screen. Very catchy 🎵 Many people dislike the in-game arts of KOF 2001 I personally like the cartoony/anime artstyle. It gives the game its own identity. K9999, Xiangfei, Lin, Vanessa, Mai, Shingo look really good. The in-game arts of KOF 2003 are my least favorites because those look generic.

Robert from Art of Fighting was made after Steven Seagal, huh, that’s news for me.

What is the whole Italy thing with Andy Bogard, btw? As for MvC2, I have never liked the presentation. Some aspects of it look like a fan-made project, including the character select screen. The small, non-animated pixel art in the corner of the char select, the gradient Impact font on the combo texts, and of course the fact that the character sprites come from many different games. Even the profile picture grid on the character select screen reminds me of Mugen.

I'd like to see ArcSys being talked about, they have some cool ones... And also BlazBlue CTB. MVC3 and its comic book goodness, MVC 1 and its design that gaslights you into not noticing the roster isn't even for each company...

red and blue is a common martial arts and sports in general contrast. Red team vs Blue team. In a fighting game where it's one side vs the other, it makes sense also you should leave a link to the video about the announcer. Cant seem to find it

You kinda skipped over mentioning that choosing your groove in CVS2 changes the art style. WIth the CAP grooves you get the capcom style art and with SNK you get the snk artworks. It's not seperated by the company origin so you can't get a capcom and snk artwork in one groove (as far as i know)

@@Drzuul Yeah! It's pretty cool how it changes your entire team's vibe depending on the groove you choose. It also reflects in the HUD so it's not superficial, it's great. I wish it would get a remaster or port or something

I hated the select screen for MvC2, even with all the 56 characters unlocked. The soundtrack was amazing though 😚😙😗😘🤗 Sf2 was probably the best, kept it easy and simple 🤗😊

They wanted the series to have Specific hero team + guests form SNK games. It wasn't JUST because they wanted to put their man series. SNK had TONS of games , was working on serveral fighting games project at the same time. You are biased. You don't talk with the 1994 1995 perspective. Exactly like you are biased when you talk like mainly a Capcom player. Don't take it personnally , but I think it's disrespecful or at least un fait for SNK in its golden age. 😥 They were way more creative than Capcom. Who invented Back dash? Who invented Supers? Part 2

I am baffled by your choice of games to focus on. Why so many snk games with such similar (and a bit dull) screens. Why not more of the Capcom marvel games? How can you just skip cvs 1 completely? The topic is unique and interesting, but I feel like there would've been so many more exciting screens you could've introduced. Especially under this title that promises wide variety.

I mainly covered games I knew and played. Also kinda fumbled into the capcom and Snk split by accident and it only made sense to end it with cvs2 and mvc2 at that point. I was concerned about time as well because I genuinely didn’t think many people would be that interested which led me to cutting 3D games and anime fighters. In the next part I’ll cast a wider net.

Yeah also requesting for a part 2. Even Capcom and SNK alone could have another 40 minutes on the topic let alone Namco, ASW, French Bread, Sega, etc

@@iVyperion I googled Mortal Combat and it seems like the first game just came out this last September 2023 no wonder I haven’t heard of it. If it’s as good as you say maybe I’ll check it out but maybe I’d be better waiting for Mortal Combat 2

Cvs2 is the most loved and hated game in the snk community. That gale was absoluteky unfair to every snk character which where poorly balanced bad buttons, nerf special It was the best disgrace of all time
