One of the things about Weird Al is the fact that he mimics the voice of the singer who's song he parodies. Of course he isn't always perfect in the copy - but you did recognise he sounded like Don Mclean, so clearly he got close enough. I love a lot of his songs and definitely this is one I love. Another great one is Amish Paradise.

Al is an underrated musical genius who has been putting out brilliant parodies for 4 decades now. So clever and super obsessed with making his songs as nearly perfect as possible. Since he took over production of his music from his original producer, Rick Derringer, he spends hours, if not days in the recording booth finessing each little detail to make the songs sound both as true to the original as possible AND as funny as possible. Amazing talent! Other favourites of mine include "Eat It," "I Love Rocky Road," "Bohemian Polka," "CNR," "One More Minute," "Yoda," "Melanie," "Word Crimes," "Mission Statement," "Bob," "It's All About the Pentiums," "White and Nerdy," and "Smells Like Nirvana." I'm pretty sure this video marked the first time Al ditched his trademark glasses, a bit of re-invigorating himself.

Amish Paradise is a great Weird Al song and video. Also, White and Nerdy. You should listen to a Weird Al Playlist and you will fall in love with Seird Al.

Very cool. I don't think I ever heard the whole thing before. That does take a lot of talent to find words that match the melody and be relavent. I love most of his parodies.

The amazing thing is that the song retells the plot of The Phantom Menace absolutely faithfully, better that I would do it in prose.

Maggie, the best way to react to Weird Al's parodies is to do a back-to-back so you can really gauge his work. My suggestion to start out would be to do Coolio's "Gangster's Paradise" and follow that with Al's "Amish Paradise," probably one of his best loved songs.

It's amazing that Al has become a household name. He started his career with a quaint accordion parody of "My Sharona" by The Knack. Check out The Knack's song, which was a huge hit, then Al's accordion jam. He originally recorded it in a bathroom at a radio station he worked at... 🧐😎 I think they did a re-recording in 1983, which I'm sure included a video for MTV... back when they played music videos. 🙄

All of Weird Al's parody songs are done with the approval of the artist of the original song. Michael Jackson even helped him with two of his songs Eat it and Fat MJ evening provided the sets for both those songs along with some of the backup dancers from the original videos

Just a moment to appreciate that he sounded just like Don McLean to you (plus his trademark nasally sarcastic overtone). Listen to other Weird Al and he easily imitates the voice of most of his parody targets the same way. Vocal talent indeed!
