They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-Wing, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help and they didn’t give him a superpower or a heat-ray, they gave him an extra heart. On the subject of former Doctors, the oldest surviving actor who played the role is Tom Baker, who was the most famous Doctor and the one who first made the show successful in America. Tom is 90 years old now. I expect that his passing will get some mention in the media even in the US. Tom played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981. Another fun fact is that one of his female companions on the show was Lalla Ward, they were married in real life for 2 years, but she ended up marrying the famous evolutionary biologist, zoologist and author Richard Dawkins, but they too are now divorced.

    Something to consider is Doctor Whos origin as a TV show, it was meant as an educational family show which would spend its time in the past to explore history and the future for science. It obviously grew from this but always maintained it pre watershed time slot and has remained family friendly. Hence its slight goofyness but its meant to be fun and exciting! Let yourself get wrapped up in the adventure of it all and remember, run!

    You're right about the limited special/visual effects of Classic Who adding to the charm of the series. I'm Gen-X (55) and it delights me that the show's revival sparked interest in the classic series, and I have seen a lot of younger reactors watch the classic episodes, completely gripped by the stories and characters, which are the true hearts of both Classic and NuWho. I also think it's funny that the oldest NuWho episodes (like this one from 2005), aired almost 20 years ago, so even the revived series now has the same low-budget charm to modern eyes that the original series had for viewers in 2005.

    If I'm remembering correctly, Police Boxes were basically telephone booths with a direct line to the local police station. A TARDIS is supposed to have a chameleon circuit, something that automatically disguises it as something innocuous, but this one got stuck as a police box in the 60s. The Doctor has since fixed it, but likes it like this.

    This was a sucessful revival because it respected the Classic series but also modernised and didn't rely on it for someone new to start watching. The Autons were a Classic Doctor Who Villain from the 70's, I wont say anythign more than that incase you ever do watch Classic Who but it doesn't matter if you know that or not. Obviously the effects in the 60's - 80's were not good, not even for the time but I don't think anyone really cared because the stories are good. Even modern Doctor Who doesn't have the best effects (although it does get better) but I can say that I have never met someone who only likes Classic Doctor Who and hates Modern Doctor Who.

But, they treat you as a complete newcomer to the series, so the Who lore will be slowly re-revealed over the course of the series. No spoilers, but there are some amazing story arcs and payoffs over the course of multiple series. Dr Who can be exciting, scary, silly and often emotional, but it is one hell of a ride...

    When police boxes were a thing - there was a hatch on the outside that held a phone connected to the nearest police station, free for use of the public in emergencies. Police officers had a key to the box and could use it for sheltering from the rain, doing paperwork, having a cup of tea, or even sticking in a captive and locking them in till they could get help. The light on the top could be set to flash to show that help was required.

    OMG I love you're watching and reacting to this. So happy! In-regards to the blanket, there's two different "categories" of Doctor Who, Classic Doctor Who, and Modern Doctor Who. Classic Doctor Who went from 1963 until sometime Pre-2005, most if not all the doctors should be on your blanket. Modern era starts with Christopher Eccleston and he's not THAT good of a doctor in my opinion, but he's still great. There has been (approximately) 14/15 doctors. The Classic eras are 1-8 doctors, and the modern eras are 9+ so, you won't be seeing the earlier doctors in the modern ones explicitly, they are mentioned and images of them are shown, but they themselves very rarely make an appearance. Plus (spoilers) there's one doctor who shows up in the modern eras who was able to be doctor twice, that no other doctor got, I can't wait for you to figure out who. == WARNING: While the list below IS a list of doctors and may be spoilers, my internal river (You'll meet them in the future) wants me to warn of.. Spoilers! == Here's a list of them (I included whether they're in the classic era or not - I didn't spoil which doctor was doctor twice, don't worry): (If you wish to look yourself: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doctor_(Doctor_Who) ) - William Hartnell (Classic) - Patrick Troughton (Classic) - Jon Pertwee (Classic) - Tom Baker (Classic) - Peter Davison (Classic) - Colin Baker (Classic) - Sylvester McCoy (Classic) - Paul McGann (Classic) - Christopher Eccleston (Modern) - David Tennant (Modern) - Matt Smith (Modern) - Peter Capaldi (Modern) - Jodie Wittaker (Modern) - Ncuti Gatwa (Modern - Present)

    A Police Box is a tiny office, telephone call unit, equipment locker and potentially a temporary cell. They mostly existed from the early 1900's to around 1960, After that, Police became more mobile, and Police stations became where Police business was done.

    Grew up on: Third - Jon Pertwee Fourth - Tom Baker But, Eleventh - Matt Smith is my favorite. The first three Doctors were the most serious. Tom Baker started the trend of absurd Doctors.

    The first absurd Doctor and a great narrator for a metal album.

    Baker was also my actual first but I found Classic Who to be too cheap and cheesy to really get into it as I was a Star Wars kid. Chris Eccelstone is who I really consider my 1st but Peter Capaldi's 12th is MY Doctor.

    My first time watching a video of yours, such great commentary! This is what reaction channels should be like, and so so few of them are! You are super charming and witty, and are always picking up and commenting on little bits in the episodes etc. Subscribed, can't wait for more! It's so interesting watching someone who genuinely has no previous Doctor Who experiences getting into the show, and really weighing the show in their head, trying to figure out what kind of thing this show is etc 😂

    re: that period of time where nothing was being made, there was actually a LOT of expanded universe stuff, audio books, novels, comics etc. particularly about the 8th doctor. but i’m not an OG fan so i can’t say what that period of time (they call it the ‘wilderness years’) was like

    There always was expanded universe stuff. There were comics made as far back as the First Doctor era. The 8th Doctor era it just went into overdrive because of the TV show being cut.

    I'm SO GLAD you're watching this! It's a long journey, but you're going to love it all. Season 1 is a bit campy, but fun.

    The original Doctor Who tv show began back in 1963 and ended in 1989. It featured 7 different actors / versions of Doctor Who. In 1996 the BBC in a co-production with Universal Pictures, made a tv movie featuring the 8th Doctor Who. It did not lead to a revival of the tv show. New Who began in 2005, with the introduction of the ninth Doctor Who. Anything else would be SPOILERS. :)

    @@idrisidmonster7115 Well, not if you don't know it is. So really, saying that "spoilers" is a spoiler is the spoiler. ...And yes, this argument could go on for months! =:o}

    Welcome to the fandom! Fair Warning: Doctor Who fans do not know how to shut up about spoilers, at all, and I'm not kidding. Some think they're being clever and cryptic about it and they're just not. Some are "just trying to be helpful" by explaining all the history and the lore like it's not explained better and clearer in the show as part of the story. Some just don't seem to register that "this major character dies in this episode" is a spoiler (not an exaggeration, I've literally seen that). It is very, very rare for a reactor to make it to even the season 1 finale without being massively spoiled for it because people will just openly talk in the comments about it like it's nothing. Have fun, you're in for a wild ride, please get a comment moderator

    Christopher made such an impact for such a short stint. The police boxes are long gone but back in the day they were basically mini police stations. A copper could rest, fill out paperwork or even detain someone. They held a phone which could be accessed by the public. In there heyday not only did no one have a mobile even land lines were uncommon.
