Weed Trimmers - Don't Rebuild The Carb!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Step by Step!
Today I'll show you why you should simply replace the carburetor on your 2 stroke weed trimmer, instead of cleaning and rebuilding it.
Long story short, replacing the carb will generally save you time and money!
This carb kit cost me $21 Canadian. And after a quick fuel tank modification (to make use of the thicker fuel line that'll last much longer), and some carburetor adjusting using the spline tool they provided, it runs like new again!

20:24 I think there’s supposed to be a spring under that screw. That would put tension on the screw so it wouldn’t just vibrate and fall out of adjustment.

Thank you for taking the time to help those of us who have never done this type of repair on a small engine and also saved us money by suggesting that we buy a whole carb kit. I have a Featherlite but not like the one you have I have to check it further to see which carb kit to get. Again thank you for your help.

The video was very informative and well done. The drill bit is a #17 not M17 (which would be 17mm). .173 inch which would be between 11/64 and 3/16 in. Or close to 4.4 mm.

Excellent presentation I never understood the Hi-Lo adjustments until I watch this video. Thank You Sir. I would like to add a discovery. While pulling the fuel lines through the tank holes I put a dab of two-stroke oil so they would slide nicely. While pulling them through with the hemostats, I use my other hand to stretch the hose a little bit. This made it contract a and slide through with ease. Another thing if the fuel line is too wide to fit over the brass snuggly I used a 1 inch piece of the smaller diameter blue hose on the brass tube. It acted like a reducing bushing inside the yellow fuel hose.

Recently rebuilt carb on a chain saw. It’s a very similar setup to this. I should have bought the China carb but got the rebuild kit instead. The hour and a half def wasn’t worth the $5 saved especially since one of the screens I changed really required some jewelers tools. Good thing I have some minimal cell phone repair experience. I avoided the new carb only because I had concerns on build quality. Fortunately it’s easy to confirm good spark and compression without a carb so I did that before spending money.

I agree with your decision, I learned the hard way. I bought a kit online and rebuilt the carburetor and it still wouldn't run. I don't have an untrasonic cleaner nor do I really have a place to have an open container of carb cleaner to soak it in. Even if I did soak in carb cleaner you have to get rid of the cleaner after. I've seen a lot of repair videos here on youtube where the purists cry foul for buying cheap chinese carbs. I've used them on my snowblower and weed wacker for years and in my opinion they work just as well and last just as long as an original parts one.

I completely agree with him! I just did exactly the same job a week ago. I still sometimes rebuild some 2 stroke carbs; but I only buy the cheap $2.50 directly (wait 2-3 months to get it) carb kits from China. I wouldn’t spend $8-15 for a carb kit because the carb might not come back and the money spent on the kit is usually just gone. I am only willing to gamble a couple of buck on a kit compared to $10-17 for the kit with a new carb plus all the extra parts that is guaranteed to work. I am also a fan of these old Feather Lites. I have one from 1999 that I bought new and it still runs great and isn’t too heavy to carry around. For cheap machines, they were plenty tough for 1/4 acre, homeowner use, easy to fix, and cheap and easy to get parts for them.

Well I completely disagree. I have rebuilt many 2 cycle carbs especially on trimmers, saws and blowers. I very much dislike any outdoor equipment in 4 cycle except for mowers and such. So if there is an issue with a carb on a 4 cycle unit, most the time if it is a carb issue, maybe then buy replacement carb.

I notice that there was no factory gasket on the air intake side on your trimmer. Mine is the same - a Canadian Tire SST25C - 2009 vintage. I guess we just put it back together the same way? With just the yellow plastic choke / half choke / run and air filter housing against the carb stack / body? It ran really well for ~13 years like this.

Question: The feed gas line is smaller than the other one. What difference does it make to keep it that way, instead of drilling out the hole and inserting a larger line? Thanks

  • @spagsketti

Replacing the carb is easier but I like the "Challenge of Ethanol" Lets see if I can actually clean, rebuild and tune it after it has sat in the back yard under that pine tree for 3 years with old gas in it with the dreaded ETHANOL. The smell from the tank and carb are enough to make you barf. I got my cheap fuel line on eBay it was a great deal and came in three sizes with multiple prime bulbs. It was cheap too. I have used the fuel line a few times with no issues. Just used a prime bulb on a carb tonight. Weed Eater gas hedge trimmer. Got it free in a junk pile in the middle of a rain soaked backyard. New bulb a good flush and it fired up without the choke. Needs a bit of adjustment on the carb but nothing that will be a big deal.

The carb kits for those are $1.50 and I buy them 50 at a time. I stopped rebuilding those because some carbs have a hidden o ring and leak. Now, I ordered 2 new carbs, one will only run with idle jet all the way in and the other which ran initially is leaking gas into the engine and out the air filter. Also having about 3 out of 4 Homelite carbs no good out of the box so today....I'm back to the ultrasonic while I wait for a carb shipment. That's an older model likely made in Canada, the Poulans to buy are the ones without primers. The carbs are near 100% repairable all the time.

I discovered this years ago. The carbs aren't worth rebuilding and they have a screen in them that clogs and won't clear. If it doesn't start I just replace it. I have one that's worked 3 years in a row, which is unusual. I put some startron in the mix and it works wonders.

I notice that an OEM carb costs 3-4 times what a Chinese knockoff does. I also looked through the Amazon reviews and see lots of complaints about missing parts in the replacement carbs amount other things. Maybe the solution is to order a half dozen, keep the first good one, and return the rest. Of course, you KNOW that the “returns” likely end up in a landfill.

Hey man love the videos. Always learning something new. I'm trying to diagnose my Echo Srm-225. It leaks fuel out of the air filter after sitting overnight. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

Needle valve and or the fuel tank vent is not venting. Possible the pressure in the tank is building up and forcing fuel out the carb into the air box. If you open the fuel cap and you hear a pssh, this could be the issue.

@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks for replying. I will check the cap. I replaced the carburetor with an aftermarket one from Amazon could that cause any issues? Thanks again

What about if the original carb is a walbro, would you replace it with a china carb? I personally like taking these carbs apart so I just buy pack of 20 meter diaphragms and replace that which is almost always the issue. Pump diaphragm is usually fine.

Thanks for the really useful and encouraging video. I’m also a big fan of replacing carburettors. Some questions for you and perhaps my fellow subscribers: 1) The OEM of my line trimmer (MTD/Troybilt) recommends a Champion RDZ4H? Isn’t this just too low-heat for a 29cc four stroke….or not? Is it worth trying a “hotter” spark plug? Worth 2nd guessing the OEM? Not under warranty, so I’d happily try some new stuff on this machine. 2) My Troybilt (now with a fully functioning Chinese carburettor) doesn’t seem to have the ability to adjust anything, other than “balancing”idle-speed and high end revs, using a single screw (just like the original Waldron). My question: is it possible to use a different carby, with more controls (like in your vid) or would this simply not be possible, by design? It took a while of pure guess work, to get my Chinese carby working, btw…. Thanks again for the insights, wonderful vids. Glen

Maybe not on a cheap machine like that, but some better quality machines have Walbro Carburettors. These can cost up to $60-70. A rebuild kit for them is cheap and its very easy to do. It's going to be much better than a Chinese carburetor of Ebay or Amazon

Fantastic vid, I am suffering carb issues with this same exact model. I have a replacement, but neither the original or replacement will drawn in fuel when depressing the bulb. I have replaced bulbs, gaskets, lines, and fuel filters but nothing is working. Any ideas?

Funny how small engine manufacturers blame bad fuel for everything. In reality fuel has never been better, what’s gotten worse is the gas lines, the fuel tanks and the carbs, all made from the cheapest plastic possible. In case of an emergency, I always keep two 5 gallon gas jugs in my shed for three years then dump in the car and get fresh gas, never had a problem, ever.

You should be adjusting the low side first as it affects the high side. Otherwise you are going to have to readjust the high side again anyways.
