The Chainsaw Carburetor How it Works
This Fascinating Video Effortlessly Explains the Inside Workings of the Two-Stroke Carburetor for a GREAT UNDERSTANDING.
- So let's begin: The two-stroke carburetor is a little but complicated mechanical marvel that powers the chainsaw, an iconic equipment in the worlds of forestry, landscaping, and outdoor upkeep. This part, which serves as the engine's core, is in charge of supplying the ideal air-fuel ratio required to operate the chainsaw's two-stroke engine at high revs. In this investigation, we'll take a deep dive inside the two-stroke chainsaw carburetor's inner workings to discover how it actually functions.
1. Air Intake and Filter: The chainsaw's air intake system is where it all begins. An air filter is used to draw air in, keeping dust and other material out of the carburetor. For an engine to run properly, the air filter must be clear and clean.
2. Venturi Effect: The air flows through a vital part known as the venturi as it enters the carburetor. The airflow is accelerated by this narrowed area of the carburetor throat, which results in a low-pressure area. The fuel must be drawn into the airstream using this Venturi effect.
3. Fuel Reservoir: A fuel reservoir or float chamber inside the carburetor houses a supply of liquid fuel, often petrol. A system of needle and float valves controls the fuel level. The float valve opens when fuel is used up, letting in more fuel to keep the level balanced.
4. Fuel Atomization: A calibrated jet draws fuel from the reservoir through the low pressure produced by the Venturi effect. In order to ensure full mixing with the fast-moving air, this jet atomizes the fuel into small droplets. A homogeneous and flammable air-fuel mixture is the end result.
5. Adjustment Screws: The majority of carburetors have adjustment screws that can be used to fine-tune the air-fuel ratio. While the low-speed screw regulates the idle mixture, the high-speed screw modifies the mixture for full throttle operation. The performance of the engine must be optimised by these changes.
6. Reed Valve: A reed valve is positioned between the carburetor and the engine's crankcase in some chainsaw carburetors. The reed valve controls the flow of the air-fuel combination, ensuring that none of it runs back into the carburetor.
The well-mixed air-fuel combination is brought into the combustion chamber for combustion and ignition. Here, the spark plug ignites it, causing a strong explosion that powers the chainsaw's piston. The chainsaw's cutting chain is propelled by this mechanical process, which converts chemical energy into mechanical labour.
8. Exhaust System: The engine's exhaust gases leave the engine through an exhaust port after combustion, restarting the cycle as the piston completes its strokes.
An essential part of a two-stroke chainsaw that ensures the engine obtains the proper ratio of air and fuel for dependable and efficient performance is the carburetor. To obtain peak performance and avoid problems like fouled spark plugs, overheating, or excessive fuel consumption, the carburetor must be calibrated to produce the ideal mixture.
The two-stroke chainsaw carburetor is proof of the meticulous engineering needed to power these amazing equipment, to sum up. It is evidence of the fine coordination of airflow, fuel supply, and combustion that allows chainsaws to flourish in the hands of both professionals and homeowners. Understanding how a chainsaw functions can help you to better understand the magic that makes it so useful for a variety of outdoor jobs.
This principle works for most types of Chainsaw saws, and the following also helps with Chainsaw maintenance. So, whether you are using a Stihl Chainsaw, Husquvarna Chainsaw, basically, all types of Petrol Chainsaw are valid for this principle, as well as many types of or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Electric Chainsaw, of course, escapes this whole principle!

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Having been left a Sthil brushcutter, and no knowledge of how the engine works, this was great. Fuel had been left in the tank unused fit 3 years! I now have the knowledge and understanding, on how and why to clean it! Thank you!!!
That's an absolutely exceptional video! I've been trying to learn about small engines and watching lots of videos of stripping, cleaning and tweaking carburetors, but watching this has just been a total lightbulb moment! Now that I understand the fuel flows and how it works, suddenly all the other videos and processes make sense and I can see how it all comes together! Thanks so much for sharing!
This was a fantastic video, great explanation. I've been rebuilding and tuning 2 stroke carbs for years, but I never understood how it all worked until this video.
Finally a video where it shows how these carburetor works. I've been waiting for this one. You sir earned a subscriber, thank you for your knowledge.
Wow, that was the best explanation I have ever heard! Thank you!
This was truly an OUTSTANDING explanation of how these small 2 stroke carburetor work. Very helpful in understanding how to troubleshoot and clean it when necessary. Many thanks.
By far the best explanation I've seen! Thank you. I'm just getting into maintaining our collection of saws and I've cleaned and changed out gaskets and needles on a couple of carbs, and now I feel like I know what I'm looking at properly.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this video. I recently ordered a service kit for my old Stihl chainsaw, and rather than being a little apprehensive towards stripping down the carburetor, instead I was fascinated and confident, it all makes sense now. What a clever design. Thanks again and all the best. Tony
This is perhaps the single best educational video on KZread. Told with skill, terrific videography, and good sense, I would rate this as one of the all time best.
After all these years, I finally understand how these carbs work. Really appreciate the time you took to publish this video.
Outstanding. Clearest, most elaborate video I have ever seen. I will return to it many times surely. Your novel use of cut aways and sectioning makes all of the difference. THANKS so much.
Superbly useful explanation, thank you! I had to recently strip and clean the carb on my STIHL strimmer. Your video was a big help.
Sir, I can't thank you enough for producing a great video. So clear and informative. I've fooled with these Stihl carbs for years and really had no idea how they worked. Always hoping that after cleaning and reassembly the problem would just go away. Usually just wishful thinking. My confidence level is much greater now. Thank you again and keep up the great work!
The best and simplest explanation of the workings of these little demons I have ever seen, so well done mate. In 14 minutes you have provided all the info that would have taken a yank about 3 hours to get through, so Thank you for keeping it simple!
Best instruction on membrane carbs I've ever seen and heard ! One should see and hear it at once - then understanding of the problem will be complete. Super lecturer and instructor YOU ARE, Sir !
Great Video! My saw would only run with the choke on, I took it apart and cleaned all of the orffices with carb cleaner, and air now it runs like new! Thank you very much!
This came up as a recommend video so I click on it not expecting to watch it through. But I have to compliment you on a job very well done. The video is very informative & the explanation using the diagrams made an excellent presentation.

Whatever way you look at it, that is a brilliant video. Clear and concise. Many Thanks.
Brilliant video! I'll be sending this around to everyone who has every opened a two stroke!
Wow! What a great video, camera in focus, actually looking at the object of interest and explained by someone who actually understands how something works! What a difference from the usual half-arsed KZread drivel! Cheers, mate!
Finally a video that explains in an easily understood way the fuel delivery system works in one of these carbs. Very well done sir!
The explanation on the fuel pump side of the carburator, with the diaphragm, has helped me understand which is the correct way to attach the fuel lines on my chainsaw (the fuel filter hose and return hose). Thank you.
Having rebuilt and cleaned many carburetors, including the very Zuma you used to demonstrate, I have loosely known these principles. This video has taken my understanding to a whole new level. Such a well done piece! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and for the outstanding teaching technique you used to explain things. Bravo!

Fear of the unknown is what this is about. After nearly 40yrs in the tree game I'm finally learning something new. I've recently been doing up some old saws as spares and it's great to have someone who KNOWS what they're talking about explain things. The best way to learn. Thank you for your time and your knowledge. I find that as I get older I enjoy passing on my knowledge to others more than the actual work. Well done Sir.
By far the very best video about the topic ! Extra bonus for the clear drawings. These are no more magic to me. Thank you sir.
Well done! I would appreciate a follow up video explaining problems that arise with these carburetors and how what you have describes here is impacted by these problems. Symptom and cause type of thing. Thanks!
A pleasure to watch, Thank-You for doing this GREAT video
You are the genius of explaining! The best video on this topic I have ever seen. Thank you for your phenomenal work and the time you put into this!
Fantastic instructional video. I could have used you 45 years ago, all these years struggling with chainsaws, lawnmowers and generators.

sorry, but maybe you know, how exactly works the Zama C1Q carburettor (e.g. from Stihl FS 310) with an inner pump piston/plunger, which is pushed with a throttle valve's shaft?.. or namely why it doesn't work on high rpm? how to remove a "leakage" through this piston? thanks!
You earned my subscription. Great job describing all the process on how it works. Keep up with this type of videos
Wow! So good listening to someone who is concise and really knows what they're talking about. Thank you.

@@TheRepairSpecialist Hi make a video on how many you turn all 3 runs in L H and T
You’re grasp of this material is as impressive as your presentation. I am sure you have probably heard it before but if you haven’t, you might consider a quick caveat indicating that the tick-over condition as it relates to a carburetor is understood in other parts of the globe to mean the “idle condition”. Your videos have helped me immeasurably troubleshoot and repair numerous small engines. Please continue to post these as you find new material.

A very well done explanation of Stihl's carburetor! I never appreciated what an elegant devise this is - simplicity of operation through complex design.
Thanks so much. It is really nice to be able to put this little thing back together and make sense of how it works. I am currently trying to fix my Stihl 240 for the hundredth time and still not working and all the gaskets are correct so I will check again for that speck of dirt that is surely there somewhere. Thanks again. Fantastic job.
excellent informative video thank you, also worth having a look at the technical pages on the Zama website explaining how these carburettors work . Which are easier to understand after watching this video. The super imposed diagrams really help to explain it . There are now more four stroke chainsaws and strimmers getting about any chance of another video to explain how they work ?
one of the most informative 14minutes and 42 seconds of my life. Just trying to work out now why I seem to get fuel into strimmer engine but not starting despite a spark. Plug coming out quite wet. Have another strimmer which starts and seems to throw out a mist through plug hole. This one doesn't so I assume I may be getting too much fuel in for the spark to cope with. off to watch lean and rich mix vid now. Thank you for your expertise and posting vid

EXCELLENT detailed explanation ! I had a pretty good idea what was going on with fuel flow, but now I feel like and EXPERT !!
Without a doubt, this is the best explanation of how these carbs work. Thank you very much! I fly R/C gas powered models and two of them use a Walbro carb and one uses a Chinese knockoff. The Walbros are great. The cheaper ones not as much. It is amazing how poorly they work when they have the slightest amount of contamination. Cheers!
So nice to understand instead of everyone tell u basically clean and replace.A lot utubers don’t even tell you fuel in or out just confusing.
I was reading Paul Dempsey's book on small engine repair, and quite frankly he lost me on the carb part. I watched your video and everything clicked. I will make sure to mention you in my Goodreads review, and how you're the perfect companion for the book.
