Wedding Cake's BIGGEST DAY

Спорт

Autumn surf just keeps giving and this time its at home in Sydney. I just arrived back to Sydney from Tahiti the swell forecast was telling us that the ocean is going to erupt with some huge waves all focused directly into the Sydney City coastline (from Wollongong to Newcastle). What I did not expect is the surf to be as big as it got. Locals informed me that this swell is the biggest in decades. One Coogee local told me that their hasn't been a swell bigger since the one way back in 1974. So it was for sure an historic day to say the least and here is the evidence.

Didn’t see any Av footage.. - what I loved so much was that long shot of the boiling, frothing horizon with chunderous sets in the foreground. Back then, yes not as big for sure but you could bet the Coogee SLSA surf boat crew would CRACK A WAVE.

I remember a swell in 78-79 (?) on the back of a low travelling cyclone (Hal?). It looked like Nazaré just standing on the Coogee promenade. The few dudes that were out there looked like they were paddling up the sides of 10 storey buildings. The waves were crashing into the wall at the northern end of the beach. Could feel it from my Grandmothers house in Hill street.

Yeah, this one was officially (as in, on the swell forecast & reporting platforms) 17ft, which yes, is still huge & spectacular to watch, and that's just the average wave height so of course some sets will be bigger than 17ft.. but 2nd April 2022 was officially at 22ft, which means many of the sets were even bigger than that. In the 2023 swell event, the waves washed up onto the road at the north end of bondi beach (where I live), but the 2022 swell washed all the way across the other side of the road & up onto the war memorial, also that swell did a lot of physical damage at every single beach between Bondi & Coogee (Coogee is where Wedding Cake Island is), including uplifted concrete slabs, bent hand railings, demolished brick walls & sandstone walls & wooden elevated walking paths, downed fences,.. it was honestly so insane, this swell was mesmerising, but that one was absolutely polarising to watch!! This swell there were only a couple of rogue sets that looked about the same size as many of last year's ones. And actually, I think it was about a month before that 25ft-er, we had another big swell that was rated at a similar size to this one., which I was shooting at the island for. 🙌🏼🤙🏼
