Man what I would give to spend a summer someplace like yours to learn about everything.

Great job separating the mares from the foals, I’m from Georgia and used to work on a smaller horse ranch/farm. Our hay was brought in from Oregon from two tractor trailers with conveyor shutes to the loft of the barn and these were 3 stranded 100+ lb bales of Timothy/ Alfalfa hay, not my favorite days but all a part of the work. Yes weaning is very stressful for both the foals and the mares. I had a young bay mare from your ranch, by a Sorrel son of Tanquerey Gin crossed on a Mr San Peppy mare and she was a nice filly that started very quiet. I eventually sold her as a four year old and she went to Kansas and was working on a feedlot and Pasture roping on her off time. One of the Cowboys up there said she took to it like she’d been doing it all her life and thanked me for the groundwork that I’d put on her. Thanks for the well bred horses! Greg

When we weaned, we did a 7 day method. We separated babies during the day in a pen with other weanlings while their moms were next door. The mares grazed in earshot and foals were reunited at night. On the seventh day, they were separated for good and the babies were not stressed at all. It was an amazing process!

Ever since I was a child it's literally My dream to be with horses. I'm indeed a big fan of horses, but here in Philippines this kind of dream is really impossible. I hope one day i can work there even without salary just to be with horses and learn their nature. Haha God bless you and your family for sharing this kind of content to us watchers. I think if you keep making video's with this much effort involved that clearly show the amount of passion you have for your occupation and labor of love, you will easily end up with the #2 equestrian channel on KZread. I say #2 because I don't think it will outgrow Dale Brisby and his unique depiction of ranching if you want to call it that. In time though, this will turn into something far greater. I really enjoyed the visit the other day with you and your little blonde partner. She is very special. Congratulations on putting together another great video.

I am currently writing a book about a girl and her horse and their life on a ranch. I've loved horses all my life, but do not have a ton of experience working with them, at least not in this perspective! I only get 1 or 2 foals a year so weaning is still stressful , but as big of deal. When I was young I used to help my cousin and we would gather a band of 60 and take the 2 year olds off and swim them across the river to the main Ranch. Then we would cut the yearlings and it was so good for young horses to work other horses . It was fun as a young man to have a 6 mile run with 60 head of horses and a stud that acted aggressive, great vid Richard

It's a stressful but necessary part of life to wean babies from their mothers. Some get taken too early and some get taken too late, but it's cool to see you guys do it in a pretty gentle manner. Then to take all that time and teach them domestication, must take a lot of patience and love.

Nicely done. I appreciate that you don't use "gimmicks" or "trick words" working the stock. Too many clinicians with "special" tack. And you also appear to realize that a good horse isn't made in 3 weeks. Time spent down will pay dividends later either in sale price or solid working stock that aren't lame or one person critters. Thanks for renewing my faith, I hope to see more videos to watch your progress with the young ones - both horse and kids!

Some horse breeders just put the mares in one pasture and the foals in an adjacent pasture with an older mare for comfort; the mares n foals can visit over the fence but no nursing and limited contact; once the foals start spending most of their time away from the fenced mothers then they can b put in a farther pasture; not so stressful for the foals or the mares...

Wow, look at the amount of them hays you collected. How many of them that you need for a winter? Please bear with me, never been living a day in the farm, not talking anout a ranch. Hi Michel Nguyen, We store around 10,000 rolls of hay each year to feed horses and cattle throughout he winter. Thats about 6,000 tons or 12,000,000 lbs! Thanks for watching!

Love you're property so much space ...space is an epic problem in ireland I don't know anyone with a stud so large here , we don't call horse properties ranches here farms or studs only stud close to this size is owned by foreign investors who might never step foot on there land mostly Arab owner's, love you're daughter's name same as my only daughter's name..she'd love this ..hagen to ask did you use a stabliser on you're camera great footage from horseback, mine is always up n down. .lovely looking young stock...can I come live there plzzzzzzz. ..

To answer the first question: if they are lucky, they will find good homes, if not, they will be worked hard until they are broken both physically and mentally and then they will go to slaughter. To answer your second question: mares would wean them themselves when they feel is the right time, with much less stress for the foal and the mare.

We focus primarily on cutting and ranch horses, but there are many of our horses that are barrel racing, roping, reining, playing polo, trail riding, mounted shooting, therapeutic riding, and just being companions to humans and other horses. The notion that we breed horses in an irresponsible manner or that we somehow neglect their wellbeing for the sake of making money simply is false. We love what we do. Weaning is a practice that any conscientious horse breeder will utilize for the sake of his or her herd. We wean to ensure that the foal continues to receive the proper nutrition, gentling, and healthcare necessary for proper development. Weaning is necessary for the mare and her next foal as well, for a myriad of reasons. Thanks again, Richard

MineLox Monn....Ranch horse’s are exposed to barbed wire. I don’t like it but it’s reality. My using horses were behind it at line camps and at a lot of the outer pastures.

You treat them like cattle. We separate them when they are older and then just at night. When they are wiened(?) they have a old mentor with the babies. Who shall otherwise teach, defend and make them secure?

Hi Cathrin Gustafsson, thank you for your comments. Although our cattle are treated better than most horses in the world today, I have to disagree when you say we treat them like cattle. Our horses are given the best of care and weaned with as little stress as possible. Our horse herds run on beautiful open pasture with ample room to graze and grow. The foals live freely with their dams until weaning time, when they are moved into open stalls and gentled so they are easily handled in case of injury or during vaccinations and deworming. After they are domesticated some (usually 2 weeks) they are turned out with older "babysitter" geldings. Our program is holistically designed to give the horse the best possible life and to prepare them for success in the future. Thanks for watching. Richard

@@LowCountryCowboys OK. So upsetting the mares and foals and then treating them as wild is OK Well we don't do so. We interact with the mother and lead them next to their moms. And Never ever these SHARP halters of rope. Our foals then dont behave as "wild". No trauma and we let it take time. Sorry but I'm not very impressed by the cowboy Macho method. Parelli has made a lot of harm to our countries horses. We have had an several hundred year Tradition of old cavalry horsemen, where they Respected the horses and didn't let anyone make them anxious. You could have made it much less complicated when you chased them by open Both gates.Simple things makes it less potentially dangerous. We also have a lot of ridingschools where people learn to behave around horses. We Don Break them. We prepare them by daily care. There are very seldom any trouble at all. No rodeo what so ever since they trust us and KNOW that we would never Scare or hurt them. Calm trusting individuals. I've seen horrific things done by Parellis. Mostly by the wife since she obviously can't read horses. These things shall not be teached by videos. Anky van Grunsven's order " Do NOT try this at home!! ". Well. Thanks for you answer. You could learn some things from Europeans who have much longer traditions. I've seen ONE good Horsemanship guru. I don't remember his name, but he looked like Clark Gable and had a softer method. The only thing I have used is to bend the head to my side when I Mount them the first times. It's been of good use since I have had 6 feet high horses or a ladder. Have a nice day now. @Tara Monette Perhaps in some cases, but most domesticated mares today have little sense of the proper time to wean their foals. Often times a mare will allow her foal to nurse long past the decline in her lactation which can cause malnutrition and udder damage to the mare. Besides, the danger of early maturing colts and fillies breeding in the pasture, or worse, a colt breeding his mother is a concern. We also must consider the amount of forage available to the young horses going into winter. We wean our foals in the fall and put them on extra feed designed for growing horses so that they get the proper nutrition without competition from other foals and adult horses. around 4 to 6 months is what i prefer

So, all mother animals, wild and domestic know when to wean and how to wean. It is instinct. Why do you feel the need to intervene? No disrespect, but this is a natural process between mothers and their babies so am just trying to understand why a horse would be unable to follow its nature when it comes to weaning.

because sometimes when a foal dosent understand when his mama wants him to be on his own, he can get hurt. the mama can bite, kick, etc...you dont want to take that risk

Best way to wean a foal? Don't. Mom horses know what to do and when to wean. Let nature take it's course the way it's supposed to.

Neon Fox It's always been my experience the mares do, but it's later than the usual time people separate them. They can become herd bound with the mare & it's difficult to separate them when broken to ride etc. without alot of anxiety.

what's wrong with this: "golf cart", I see no golf balls or them sticks ya beat'em with, I sold the golf cart and bought a horse. and for the record you sing like a bird, a crow.

SHOW DON'T TELL. There is NO need to cut to a person saying this is what we are going to do when you can show it being done while explaining it.
