Ask the Vet - When to wean a foal

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this excerpt from the November 2019 episode of Ask the Vet ( • Ask the Vet - Diatomac... ), Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan answer a viewer question on when to wean a mini-colt. They discuss why some may be ready to wean earlier than others, the difference in time between wild and domesticated horses, as well as the methods for separating the foal from the mare to facilitate the weaning.

this sounds a lot like weaning puppies... 6 to 8 weeks is when they should be eating on their own and mom is just around for discipline and guidance/comfort. but if you have been there since the foal's birth they SHOULD see you as part of the herd and not some stranger who comes around to steal them. this video pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. i just wanted to be absolutely sure before I made any changes. Wildfire, our little man(also a mini) is way past weaning age according to this. He's our first ever foal... i always thought they stayed with mamma for a lot longer! at least that's what everyone else i know did. and people seem to sell colts around 5 months old... i don't want to just follow the crowd without understanding if this is a good idea or not.... his mom is beginning to lose condition. i increased her food but also started to wonder if maybe it's just time for him to be a big boy. And the way my farm is set up we can absolutely separate them without stressing them out. He already wanders off on his own so yeah.... maybe it's time! i have a couple of videos on my channel if anyone wants to see him :) he's not a teeny tiny miniature but still cute as a bug. And yes, he is named after the song. the lyrics said PONY.... and he loves to run like blazes :D

gauge your mare's condition and whether or not the foal is eating fully on its own. it sounds a lot like weaning puppies. 6 to 8 weeks is when they should be eating on their own and mom is just there for comfort and discipline.
