We visit NOVI SAD during a HEATWAVE and swim in the Drina River! (Balkans Motorhome Trip)

After a long day’s drive from Blagaj (Bosnia), we arrived at the Bijambare Protected Natural Area where we checked with the staff at the ticket booth that it was alright for us to overnight and they said that it was no problem. Just as we were about to go to sleep (around 11 pm) something happened that we've never experienced in before in our 2 years of full-time motorhome travel around Europe. The next day we foiund ourselves back in Serbia. Where we made new friends and visited Novi Sad - while enduring the sweltering heatwave which was experience all over Europe.
Motorhome life is tough in this kind of heat!

    Novi Sad is quite a gem. Lots of cafés, bars and restaurants. Good quality restaurants. At Dunavska street and Jovan Jovanović Zmaja there are a lot of alleyways with shops, bars and galleries. Artisan ice cream is produced and sold by Crna Ovca (black sheep), and Moritz Eis. They are a bit more expensive but really excellent. At the river you have a nice sandy beach called Štrand, which is very popular when the weather is hot. The mountain range just south of the city, Fruška Gora, is partly a national park, and has around a dozen monasteries and a lot of wine producers well worth a visit. As mentioned in a previous comment by me the area, including NS, has numerous minorities living there which is visible on official plaques which are usually written in Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak and Ruthenian.

    22:40 wrong comment "sugar rush". You were drinking Cockta Free (remember?) no sugar in it. Sugar is only in Cockta Original (blue label). So you could have another one without any guilt. Thank you again for the great video. Sometimes I keep forgetting there are only two of you, not only for the 3D camera and the stick but leaving the camera on the wall and then walking towards it, or doing the selfie with Lisa and then you walk ahead and stop filming Lisa coming towards you (in the tunnel passage)... it is all edited so nicely you really give impression you were followed by a camera crew. Very nice. That creep sneaking around your motor house in the middle of the night it was like a horror movie. Blare Witch Project 4? You were brave if you walked out only with the torch. Maybe you should mount some cheap LED spot lights around Millie in 4 directions and some switch next to your bed for an instant: "hello, what are you doing here?" warning without going out in the dark. Not for the next trip as you will less likely come across the situation like that, but if you are coming back again? When you get to Budapest and try to have some local food, do not forget to have some paprikash or fish sup. They have some great food and it is spicier just a bit more than in other Balkan countries. When I say spicier, it is not just more paprika and chilies but generally more flavours. Have a great trip and more pleasant surprizes like that swim in the river.

    😋 Yes, it more of a 'brain freeze' moment from drinking the cold Cockta too fast! 😄Thank you for your comment and your suggestions. We really appreciate it when people acknowledge the effort that goes into making videos like this. There's also a balance between 'getting the shot' and actually enjoying the location ourselves. After all, we're not just telling the story, we actually want to live it. About the stalker, usually I would avoid confrontation at any cost but there was something very strange this time. We actually spoke about getting some lightbars with a 'zombie switch' and even another camera so you can see what's going outside. Just have to figure out the practicalities.

    As always, that was a delightful 25 minutes well spent. And... sorry, I made notes... - creepy visitor. Creepy or what, stay safe. - lakes, scenery amazing. you lucky lucky things.... - cool river swim, fast flowing. I used to do Triathlon's and dreaded the open water swims, that river looked scarily fast flowing. Glad you got out before your reached Moscow.... - Yes goes both ways. I think that they were equally glad to have met you guys. You are both good company and interesting young (did you like what I did there!) people. Being open (and saying yes) is key to having these kind of enriching interactions. - temps are crazy. Irelands cool climate is seeming more and more attractive. - those poor truck drivers in the queue must be baking. Crikey, imagine sitting in a cab for that long in those kind of temps. Myself and two of my brothers went on a road trip this weekend, we traversed (in a car) around Galway in Ireland. We visited places that I've never been to before and I couldn't stop noticing campervans and thinking of how you guys would have loved where we were. My brothers were getting annoyed with me for constantly checking out the different campervans and motorhomes every time that we stopped. You guys need to visit Ireland at some point, I'm sure you would love it. Anyway..... Thanks for sharing your journey with us, stay safe and keep smiling.

    Such a good film thank you. That was sooooo creepy having a guy hanging around Millie! Just shows to never be complacent no matter how much research you do there could still be 'that guy'! Reality check for us as we learn! We are definitely inspire to say yes and hope to be like you guys and explore without expectation. We actually burst out laughing when Andre said 'everyone else is already dead'! Hopefully you've found cooler weather now!? We enjoyed this film eating our supper sat looking out across a huge river at a festival of adventure which feels quite apt! Have you now added 'check pants' to your pre-flight list.......

    It's always a bit different if you visit a destination on 'holiday'. Viewers of our videos often don't realize that we 'live on the road. Often, we just pass through an area, and we don't see every sight or experience every must do. It's life, just a bit different. The last 3-4 months we spent in the Balkans wasn't near enough to fulfill our curiosity and we see it more as a 'tasting menu' to learn from for next time. And there definitely WILL be a next time. Thanks for your comment!

    How do you guys deal with immigration/visas? I know the EU only allows 90 day visas that can be renewed once or 6 months per year. Do you just go to a non-Schengen country and then go back to renew and get another 90 days? But then you still have to leave for 6 months and have a place to put the RV. Seems tricky

  • @WeWillNomad

    @WeWillNomad

    Actually, you can definitely get long term multi-entry Schengen visas. We recently met a South African couple who received a 10-year Schengen visa. But yes, with Schengen you will never be able to avoid the 90 out of 180-day limitation. There are also loads of citizens from countries who do not require a Schengen visa but are still limited by the 90-day rule in the same way. With a valid Schengen visa, you can also enter many other European countries visa free. Especially handy for Bulgaria, Romania and all the western Balkan countries (Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, N.Macedonia, Albania). Although not ideal, the only reh multi-entry Schengen visa and split your time between the Schengen areas and then get out for 90 days. It's easy to spend 90 days in the Balkans for example. You can also apply for a Turkish visa to take you a bit further if you feel like it. Or even spend winter in Morocco. The major challenge really is navigating the peak of summer when it's VERY busy in coastal regions and figuring out where to be during the worst of winter (January, February) all within the limitation of the 90 days in Schengen. We're fortunate to hold Italian passports which gives us unlimited access to all EU countries.

    @@WeWillNomad An English friend of mine used to say to people that we would meet in Brussels years ago (20 years ago) "Ah, we are all Europeans now...." and used to then add cheekily "except the Germans". Oh the irony of it, the Brit's have cleverly excluded themselves from the largest trading block in the World. Having an EU passport makes life a lot easier when living, working or travelling within the EU. Wouldn't it be great if we could all travel where-ever we wanted without the need to ask permission from someone else. A Planet Earth Visa kind of thing !
