For removing old paint, a better solution is a heat gun, it is not expensive and lasts longer than a chemical paint remover for the same price, and it can handle more types of paint, it looks like heavy oil paint on old doors,

DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED!! You kids are doing a great job and exhibit LOTS of energy and strong willpower. I have a suggestion for the paint problem. Use a torch to heat and blister the old paint ( don’t light the wood on fire). Fire the torch and steadily go back and forth over a 10 inch square area then use your scraper on the blistered paint before it re-hardens. I’ve done this many times with old multi layered paint and it WORK. Save the liquid paint remover for last and use coarse steel wool to scrub off the residual paint. Again, DON’T GIVE UP!! I’m extremely happy to see you have pumped water. Next, run the water into the house into a sink and your good. Peace from California USA. John

Don’t think of it as a fail. I love watching these videos of you guys and this house in the village. It’s great to think of all the generations of people who lived and laughed and raised families in this home and now it’s yours .

Be cautious of lead in the paint. Most exterior paints contained high levels of lead, and sometimes even mercury. If you use a sander make sure you use a high quality organic respirator with lead filtration. Best way to test is to draw a metal tool over the paint. If it leaves a dark streak it probably is lead. You can’t ever be to cautious with your health!

I've found the jell paint removers work the best, 1 coat usually takes off most paint surfaces. 2 coats should remove it down to the wood. Then sand and stain or paint. 😊

You don’t need to remove all of the old paint. It‘s sufficient to remove the loose parts and all the dirt. Sanding would indeed help! Then give it two or more coats of fresh paint and it will be good as new!

Scrape the loose stuff. Coarse sand to blend surfaces. Prime bare wood. Paint use a single edge disposable razor to squeegee paint on glass back to glazing putty. I used to use only acrylic water based paint. Now I’m seemingly going back to oil. Use paint conditioner.

Pavlo, you need a gel paint stripper. Because it is so thick, it will stay on the wood where you brush it thickly, and you could leave it for hours and have more success. The spray and the thin paint stripper work more for paint clean up off of glass, or thinning paint. You also need some fine and medium grit sandpaper after removing the paint to prepare the surface before wiping it down to paint it.

Pavlo hi from Calif USA, try heating the paint with a torch and scraping it off with a putty knife. Worked great for me. It softens the paint, so it can be easily removed. Hope this helps.😊

Burning off old paint like that is very dangerous because it has lead in it and when you burn it off it makes lead oxide which can be in hailed into your lungs , from a 72 year old painter

"Submersible pump" is the name, and everyone with a well in the USA has one. I have a water well that is 300 meters deep! The hole is just 6" diameter and so the pumps are long and narrow. Just wire brush the door and paint it blue. The rough surface is a good look, much sought after.

Another way of removing paint is to use a heat shrink gun and a scraper. You heat up the paint until it bubbles, then scrape it off. If you are using stripper, It takes a lot of time and many coats to get the paint off. Best to ask at your store what is the most effective stripper. It just takes patience and work.

@@zlauriault My guess would be that it is an oil based paint. The heat gun method works just fine for all paints. With stripper, I found some paint that just defied stripping. I don't know what it was, but it was a hundred years old. Have no idea what they used back then.

Lead based ,try not to breathe up the dust….heat gun would be the best option.

Pavlo/Luba, today wasn’t a failure, you’ve managed to get water from the well for yourself and you’ve figured out that theirs many layers of paint to be removed before you decide paint again. As for removing the paint, either a sander or a paint stripper which heats up the paint and then strip it off with a scraper. Getting this house to look the way you want is going to take time, but you’ll be better people for it, as it’s a learning curve throughout. Anyway love the content, Luba has a fun sense of humour in front of the camera.

If you are using liquid stripper, it will take many coats and lots of work to get the paint of. Ask at your store what is the best stripper to use. Do you have hardware stores in Ukraine? Apply a coat of stripper, let it set for a while, apply more. Do that until the paint bubbles up, then scrape it off and start stripping what is left.

It is customary to use 2 band clamps on the end of the hose. Try and find good stainless steel ones with hexagonal heads to tighten. The cheap ones will rust off in a couple of weeks. To strip the doors it is MUCH easier to take them off the hinges and work on saw horses. You need a paint scraper (not a spatula or putty knife) and a power sander (or more than one type) for that job. Just because a job takes more than a day it is not a failure.

Good to see Luba so comfortable in front of the camera now. I think humidity effects how well the paint stripper works.

Never a failed day guys. It’s all about learning. You’ll get it figured out. When you do get it all sanded down with a powered sander, make sure to use a high quality primer on it before painting again. Also wear good dust masks as well because I’m sure that is lead based paint. Luba is turning into a star. :-) Where Jack?

Exactly. Old paint contains stuff that is harder to remove, so I would go for powered sander.

I still enjoyed your video and don’t consider it a fail. It’s a process. I think it is so interesting to see the good, the bad, and everything in between to appreciate the finished product. You are doing a great job guys!

It's wonderful to follow your house project. We had a somewhat similar experience a few years ago. We bought a small cottage for €300 (is the real price) in the wilderness of Lapland in Finland and renovated it into a summer cottage. We have a tent sauna there, there is no electricity and water is fetched 2 km away, as well as an outdoor toilet. We are already a couple over 60 years old. Ukraine is close to our hearts every moment. In the Second World War, the Russians killed a large part of the civilians of that Lapland village.

It may have been a frustrating day but it certainly wasn’t a fail. As long as you got something accomplished and learned from the experience it was a good day. All of your hard work will be successful in the end. Keep up the great work. You have all of our support.

What a labour of love your house has become! Seriously guys, I would just use a filler for any holes and cracks, sand it all down with an electric sander to a smooth finish, use a primer to seal, then repaint it. To remove many layers of paint is incredibly labour intensive and would take many many hours, even with a heat gun.

Your efforts ,and at times struggles, will make you love that place that much more. Not sure how that works exactly,but it does. It'll become your door, you'll know it well

Hello Pavlo and Luba. Stripping so many layers of paint from this door is a quiet challenge. I'm restoring antiques for a living. My customers often bring furniture covered with multiple coats of paint or other clear coats. Here in the USA, we have a few different products for removing paint from any surface but still, the entire stripping process requires so much work,, caution, effort, and patience. The paint strippers are stinky and toxic, stay away from them, unless you will be wearing protective gear. Your best option is to buy an orbital sander, sharp scraper, and lots of sanding discs. Start with 40 maybe 60-grit sandpaper, then 80-grit and 120-grit. Use the sander at low RPM( if the sander has adjustable speed), otherwise, the speed of the disc will produce heat on the paint, melt the paint and quickly clog the disc. Buy at least 10 discs of each grit. I'm pretty sure the doors were painted previously with lead-based paint, wear a respirator to avoid inhaling the lead dust. You can also use the heat gun, to heat up the paint, scrape with a sharp scraper and then sand it with 120-grit sandpaper. Good luck with the project.

Not to give up. A lot of those paint removers don't work. You can scrap the big pieces and leave the rest. Just sand off as much as possible and paint a primer underneath then paint two coats on top. It should work. Thanks for posting the hard work. It happens to us all, sometimes we don't get the results we planned for either. Stay safe. Hey guys, the only thing in the world that takes off old paint is called zip strip. It will bubble the paint right off. Also the hose that you guys are using for water is not intended for drinking water, because it is made from lead, which is very bad. There are special hoses made to use for drinking water. This is coming from my husband muxaulo who is 67 years old and has been painting for 45 years. The hose that you guys are using is for campers, trailers and motor homes only. Remember what Forrest Gumps mama told him? 😅😅😅 thought would give you guys some helpful hints. And Luba you look darling in your cute summer dress, your hair is getting really long. You look fabulous in those goggles by the way. Good luck and do some research on what you guys need to fix up that house. That hose is NOT for rvs campers etc. It is for watering plants etc outside. You are correct that is should not be used for drinking water. Why would you say it's ok for a camper??? That doesn't make any sense. There are drinking water safe hoses for campers, they are marked as such, and are normally white. I have 2 campers, so I know what I am talking about. And I'm 68.

A heat gun or a heat plate works best for old paint with many layers. Heat the paint until it gets soft and then scrape it off. Your paint probably has lots of lead in it so wear protective clothing and a respirator. Be careful with the heat gun, it can scorch or burn the wood, and crack your window glass if you are not careful. I love watching you fix up that house. I've been in the business for 50 years and all I can say is don't get discouraged!!!

Good one Pavlo. Remember to make sure there are no kinks in the hose pipe connected to the pump. Otherwise the water will have nowhere to go and the pressure will build up in the hose and the hose will blow off the pump again. Thanks for sharing 😊👍

The wood pieces (doors, trim, etc.) need to be horizontal (on a flat, level surface) so the solvent stays in place and bubbles up the old paint. Follow the timing in the directions, and scrape the layers off. It may take a few repeats to get the old paint off, and you'll still need to sand the remainder that the solvent doesn't lift.

Whenever I've removed paint from window frames or doors, I've always used a blowtorch and a putty knife. You have to carefully hold the blowtorch on the paint and scrape away the melting paint with the spatula. However, I don't know how it behaves with such old wood - not that you burn the whole door down right away. I would also be careful with the door leaf that you treated with the paint remover. The stuff might burn like an accelerant, so be careful!

Next time try a heat shrink gun. You will like the results much better and less chance of burning your house down.

Hi Guys I really love watching you guys. You are so much like what life was like in my country home in Canada. As for your paint remover the jell is the best but if this door has been painted for years and years with this paint it is possible no paint remover will take it out it is just soaked so far into the wood. In that case if you still want to change the paint you will need to sand down the wood to below the level the paint has soaked. Big job. What ever you decide it is going to be a wonderful house for the two of you and I wish you the best.

I really like watching you guys work on that house. The wood on the door is so old and the grain of the wood is splitting. The word for the machine in English is “sander.” But it still will look blue, but any new paint can hide that blue color. You just can’t use a stain. A good oil based paint will cover it good.😀

You need to go to a place that sells paint there and ask them what kind of paint stripper you need to get older paint off of the wood.

Pavo this will change your painting life. "3M 7771 Stripper Brush, 4" Diameter. " It fits in a drill and works much better than drill wire brush or chemicals. It will even remove rust from metal. They don't last very long but each one could do the door and some trim.

Ah now I know why people over here found it easy to greet me in dialect. 'Moi' means in my dialect 'Have a nice day' and we use it a lot, even greeting people that we don't know. In Dutch it would be 'Goedendag', 'Hallo' or 'Hoi', but why make things difficult :) I love what both of you do with this house. I know for sure it's gonna be awesome!

Restoring an old home takes a lot of time and effort. Some of that paint may be as old or older than you are! You will get to where you wish to be and you are making many memories that you can share with your children one day! Don't be discouraged.

We had to fix the water supply to our rental in west ukraine, some alcoholic workers who were alleged experts came and couldn't fix it. So we dug a trench 90cm deep some say more some say less, installed a new supply pipe (the blue one) drilled a hole in the well , elbow joint to connect the down pipe to the new pump. We followed the old route to the house but ended up having to drill and bash a new hole . All connected all working, though we also had to fix the old electrics later. It actually turned into a bathroom refurb in the end. Obviously, landlord delighted to have former tradespeople renting their ruin. Back to the pipe, you've got to bury it and throw in some insulation too,or it will freeze, its also a good idea to put the pipe within a bigger pipe ,like a grey waste water pipe so if you have any leaks you can just disconnect and pull the pipe out and slide a new one in. Burn the paint off with a heat gun and scraper. I have my own house to do when energodar is deoccupied, we are fed up making our landlords house to better spec.

If anything...give the door a very light sanding and paint with a CLEAR finish!

In the UK, we have companies that strip doors - you take the door to them, they put it into a huge tub of paint stripper, and you pick it up a couple of days later.

I love the fact you guys are doing this reno, id love the own such a property.. bit far for Australia. With the door and other paiting tasks, im asuming your going to repaint the doors & other wood work.. id consider the old paint as the under coat, as it has stood the time and weather for many years. With that in mind id remove all paint that is flaking off & sand the remaining paint getting a flat surface your happy with (sanding) & then re undercoat the door etc before final painting. Ps. Im a tradesman & thats the method id use as the house has a lot of history and id keep it that way outside & make the inside something special... just my take on the reno... cannot wait for more videos.

You didn’t fail, if that’s a old milk or alcohol based paint it’s going to be hard to remove, I would check out both a belt sander and a orbital sander. Get plenty of sandpaper because the paint is going to clog the sandpaper up pretty quickly. 👍

With your submersible pump always keep hose straight with no bends (kinks) because pressure will build up and blow the hose off the pump :)

Pavlo - Try an electric heat gun to soften the old paint and scrape it off as you go with a stiff putty knife. Watch out for the fumes. No doubt the old paint has lead in it. Lookin good!!

Was waiting for you to finally remove the door. It should be laid flat. Best remover is thick gel. Block it on thick to pool up and break up the paint. Have to give it time. Another neat trick if you have a bunch of scrap glass around is you break a piece off to create a sharp edge, then use it to shave off any paint or varnish easy. Takes practice and only works on flat parts, but no chemicals needed. It gets dull, you break another chunk.

Hi guys, thanks for sharing your project 👍. Just a suggestion regarding of removal of such a thick coat of paint: try to use a heat gun and paint scraper. While heated the pain shuld come off easily with a flat paint scraper or putty knife. And after that you can use sander or sand by hand. Good luck!

Those colors in the doors are amazing already, but I am sure you would leave them brand new looking.

Removing that many layers of paint just plain sucks! I say new doors! You two have a wonderful work ethic. Keep at it your house will be beautiful.

Wear a dust mask, and old cloths because it has lead in the paint. They make a paint remover that you can brush on. It will bubble up the old paint, then you scrape it off. All old paint has lead in it, very hazardus to ones health. It is better to remove the wood and do it in an open covered area so paint dust remains out side not in the house. Out side wood once the paint is removed, coat with Linseed oil let the wood soak it up. You may need to use a rotary sander with 80 grit to remove the layers. Then a vibrating sander with finer grit to smooth out the wood surface. Another way is to sand-blast off the old paint. So use the best dust mask you can get.

A sander can help remove old paint from wood. Use a sandblaster to remove paint from metal.

I have spent almost as much money redoing something as I could have bought a new one, but I learned a lot along the way.

A Caustic Tank is the most commonly used method to strip paint from wood doors and furniture. Many people assume a stripping tank is an acid bath, it is totally the opposite; caustic soda is an alkaline

I think that you should pump the well dry repeatedly like 4-5 times, while letting it fill up in between, before you drink the water. It is good if something has fallen down into the well and accumulated while it has not been used.

Great you now have water. The Gel paint strippers are the best, but you certainly have a lot to do!! 👍👍😊😊

Your home improvements are looking good!!! Here is a little advice for your new water pump; Don't pump the water from the bottom of your well, make sure that the bottom of the pump is at least 25cm above the muck at the bottom of the well. This will help your pump last longer by keeping the dirt and sand out of the pump... Later on, you will want to clean and sanitize your well... Cheers

Try an electric sander, it could help with removing the old paint.

Try using a heat gun to strip the paint and sander/sand paper to sand the excess, a good quality primer and paint.

Hey guys get some trestle's and get up off the ground that will save your backs also battery drills don't spin fast enough for wire brushes. As commented below gel paint remover works best. It looks like you might have to tool up Pavlo mains powered angle grinder and drill heat gun scrapers etc. Of course it all depends on how far you want to go! Keep up the good work.
