    That decline press looks like I'd fall in love with it. I know decline press isn't as effective in terms of bodybuilding as an incline press, but it's kind of underrated in my opinion and I personally love the feeling I get when doing a "decline press" (just tilting my back slightly at a plate loaded chest press machine at my gym).

    I have a question about the bottom position stretch for hypertrophy training: I feel this the most with lat prayers and incline DB press, where I can either keep the muscle actively flexed/engaged at all times and go as deep as possible, or relax the muscle and let myself passively be stretched even further. Is one of those two options particularly better than the other?

  • @NorThenX047

    @NorThenX047

    8 ай бұрын

    im pretty confident that stretch under load promotes more hypertrophy but even a passive stretch before contraction has its benefits.

    I have better pumps when I relax the muscles for a split second during pull movements, but for push movements it's the opposite (for example, at the bottom of a bench press I keep the bar on my chest for half a second, doing a little force upwards to maintain a light touch but not moving the barbell). I think it's just personal preference and the best way to know what's better for you is experimenting both and seeing which method results in better pumps

  • @rm06c

    @rm06c

    8 ай бұрын

    I think I'm general you want to be stretching your muscles as if you were getting ready to do another rep. If that means having them engaged, then keep them engaged. If it means relaxing and then going again, then do that.

    Not sure. But you can do them both! Stay tensed at the bottom for a second, then relax for a full second, then come back up! - Dr. Mike

  • @Simlatio

    @Simlatio

    8 ай бұрын

    My assumption from listening to Mike is this: In the context of hypertrophy, if you can gain significant increases in ROM by releasing SOME tension and relaxing into a deeper stretch, then this is preferable to maintaining maximum tension. A good example of this is the machine row, where you release some tension to allow your shoulders and thoracic spine to roll forwards to create the stretch. For you, this would apply to your lat prayers and incline dumbbell presses, where releasing a little tension to allow your lats to stretch or allowing your dumbbells to reach your biceps would be ideal. It is possible to stretch so excessively that you cannot produce force to initiate the lift and this would be a detrimental increase in ROM. If you gain hardly any ROM from releasing tension, then do not release the tension. An example of this would be the squat, where at the bottom of the squat if you release the tension you can squash your hams and calves for a little additional depth, but you will essentially be resting on your haunches at this point without or with minimal tension and may encourage you to bounce out of this position, similar to the bench press where you can allow the bar to depress your rib cage a little for extra depth at the expense of tension and again may encourage bouncing. For these movements, go as low as possible while maintaining full tension during a brief pause at the end of the eccentric phase and then commence the concentric phase without releasing any tension from the muscles. It goes without saying to listen to your body on this one, if joint pain or discomfort that isn't metabolites in the muscles crops up from these deep stretches then limit the range of motion, modify the technique or change the exercise. I for one have to pretend I'm a choo-choo-train on the eccentric of an incline dumbbell press using a neutral grip to avoid a tendon in my right shoulder going "TWANG", before I flare my elbows back out and touch my biceps for the concentric. If this didn't work for me, I would do partials in two ranges before and after the spot where my tendon snaps. This illustrates the point that sometimes you need to accept that the optimum technique can't always work for you and that you need to throw away the guilt and social anxiety of not performing to a global standard, so don't be afraid to experiment a little and see what you get the most out of, whether it be full stretch, full tension or a combination of both.

    Hey just thought I would provide some tips for anyone trying to replicate the the wrist curl aspect of the forearm machine that have really helped my forearms grow. 1. Use the rotating straight bar cable attachment so it rolls easily as you move. I suspect there may be a way to involve fat grips to make this even better. I am not a particularly strong person but I am able to wrist curl 80 lbs for reps with a slow eccentric on the cable machine, so I suspect many may be limiting themselves by using dumbbells due to the awkwardness of wrist curling them. 2. Do these seated with your wrists on your knees. Of course sam sulek is cool but its much easier to not cheat this way, and your back and arms arent as taxed for the rest of your workout if you are prioritizing forearms by doing them first. 3. Allow your fingers to uncurl enough so that you get a deep stretch in the forearms, but not so much that you accidentally drop the bar. 4. Consider keeping your thumb on the same side of the bar as your hand. With a supinated grip, i find the part of the hand thats inward can curl farther than the outward counterpart. This allows you to have a greater range of motion without making your wrists feel "crunchy" 5. As Dr. Mike has said in other videos, consider myoreps or otherwise approaching failure many times as the forearms recover quickly and if you train them individually you can use straps guilt free on any pulling movements I'd love to hear anyone else's tips or criticism of mine. Happy gainz ❤️

    Its equipment like these is where i like working out, since its fun i find it very fun i workout to look good and be strong and all that, but its so hard to be consistent when you dont have equipment. Im not saying you need all these equipment since you can still variations of them especially for that forearm machine you can just do barbells and dumbells for those and it still is very fun. I love working, i love doing all these workouts but i generally lack the motive to workout when i dont have equipment but i still try since if i want to get the body i want in the future, then i need to do something to start and be disciplined through that.

    David is an old Finnish gym equipment brand. They have lot of their machines this "bottom hevier" load curve, desinged in 90s. Great machines

    I wish they would make that High Row with a combo of plate and selectorized. Would love to be able to use the plate loaded for overloading the stretch and then shift to selectorized for a more even strength curve after frying the stretch.

    hey Mike - earlier on the chest press machine you mentioned that it should be light at the bottom of the motion where you get the most stretch, and heaviest at the contraction at the top. This is inverse from your comments on the lat pulldown machine. I can make out why it would feel better that way especially for hypertrophy but can't really come up with an explanation for it. Can you elaborate? Cheers!

    my gym got a few new atlantis pieces. The pendulum squat and side lateral machine are solid. I don't like the atlantis leg press, it does too much of the work for you and the angle doesn't allow for a deep stretch at the bottom.
