We tested Google Stadia. The input lag is horrendous. | Launcher Reviews

Спорт

Editor’s note: This video incorrectly states that we asked for Google for comment on the input lag time. At the time of publication, we had not asked for comment, but have subsequently done so.
Google Stadia is a great concept for the next generation of gaming, but its input lag - which is variable - makes it nearly unplayable. Launcher tested Stadia on a 1 GB Internet connection. Subscribe to The Washington Post on KZread: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

lol yeah and I wonder what Google has to say about "predicting" continuous inputs like the analog sticks and mouse! They said they would render all possible options for button presses, yeah, and what about mouse input? It could be a million frames to be pre-rendered each second.

There is vital information missing, how far away from google servers were they when testing? 1 GB connection won't do jack shit if they have been testing it in Hong Kong. It's not impossible to get this to work, but it's never implemented correctly. If you get 5ms of latency to their server, that's not a big deal. The video encoding lag is a bigger deal and they clearly did a shit job. Out of all the cloud service's I've tried, only shadow/parsec have input latency that isn't horrific. Not ideal, but a lot better than this.

You gotta buy them full price while you can already get them for nearly half price on other platforms. Microsoft's project xcloud is way better atm. You get a whole 50+ games in your library to choose from and you don't even have to purchase every one of them. Google shouldn't even have tried to enter the gaming market as they have no chance against Sony, Microsoft and nintendo. They should do away with stadia like they did with Google glass and plus or change the business model to one similar to that of xcloud.

IDK why stadia has this much input lag. I play with Geforce NOW (Nvidia's stream service) and there is NONE, even when using a wireless connection on a macbook. If you have a little hiccup while using wireless the resolution will drop for a bit but it still doesn't get input lag. IDK why people were so hyped for stadia thinking they would be able to play pc games anywhere on the go with their mobile data, even with wireless you need an exceptional connection. I am not surprised if this whole thing turns out to be a flop.

Forbes and PC Mag had similar complaints about extreme lag on certain solutions, all on high speed home/dedicated networks. It's not simply an issue of congested networks and firewalls (although that might be the problem here). It seems like the wired gamepad solution works best, looking at some other reviews (it seems to be OK in this video as well) although there is far from any consensus. The reviews seem to be all over the place in trying to deduce what the various lag and other stream problems are caused by, whether it's the Internet connection, wired gamepad, wireless gamepad, browser app, Chromecast Ultra or the servers causing it. I wonder how many of the public will experience these lag problems in the coming weeks.

it's called physics, the further you are from the server the longer it will take... seriously wall street brokers buy buildings next to the NY stock exchange, and setup dedicated fiber connections to the exchange just to win a couple of milliseconds... how do you think a mass market service like this can achieve that? anything above 30-40 ms is already too much for certain games. Best reviews so far put the input lag between 100ms and 200ms. Just no.

Is there an option to affect the video frame rate? There was an issue on PS4 when playing Call of Duty or Battlefield games that had a huge delay in controller to video syncing. I am not sure if this is the same issue but I think this statement might help: "Disable HDMI-CEC. In my tests, this added ~10ms of lag on my set. I disabled it on my TV and on my PS4. Though, disabling it on my PS4 didn't change my lag, but it did change audio cut out (not really relevant to this thread though)." Statement was pulled from a Reddit feed. I don't remember if that is what I did to fix the lag issue. Maybe the same for the Stadia?
