The fastest way to charge a flat battery is with a jumper cable and a car. Usually works. Sometimes a truck or a tow truck is needed to jump start the battery when its drained. Cheaper and more reliable than charging with a solar power brick and you can get a full charge typically within minutes.

Maybe you can try a linear polarised filter on the camera the screen. Rotating every 90 degrees will go between max and min reflection. Another thought Tim, is at 12:00 in the video that the AMI's Battery Protection System cut power from the main battery completely, and that you also ran the the 12v Battery flat, and that 150W charge was a charge circuit for the 12V battery.

@@MeandMonAmi I don't know for sure but I don't think the 12V battery and the 48V battery "talk" to each other so I don't think you were driving even one centimeter using power from the 12V battery; the drain would be just too much and those battery leads would be dangerously taxed with all that current flowing through them for an extended period of time. I also don't think the 48V motive battery and the 12V accessory battery are in any way connected to each other otherwise, when the 48V was getting charged through the mains, the 12V would also be topped up, too, and again I don't think that is the case.

I'm wearing my Evil Elli pantomime villain costume ["Boooo! Hiss!"] as I write this on a channel devoted to an electric vehicle: One good thing about an ICE car is the ease with which range can be extended. Carrying a couple of gallons of spare petrol in the boot is always an option. I lived in East Africa for a few years [my dad was with the Flying Doctor Service in Kenya], and the Land Rovers there took range anxiety seriously; they all had permanent mountings for four 5 gallon jerrycans. Getting stranded out in the bush was not to be recommended (no mobile phones to call for help in the 1980s), so carrying fuel and water was essential when faced with MAMOBA (Miles And Miles Of Bl**dy Africa). The cans were only filled for long journeys (but it was considered good form always to carry a bit of emergency fuel to help out strangers in trouble - and what goes around, comes around🙂). Lugging the extra weight certainly had an impact on fuel economy; ironically, the fuel shortened your range whilst at the same time extending your range... 🤔

Now one thing that is most likely happening, when you flat out a battery it goes in "safe mode". You can't discharge a battery beyond it's capacity. To reset that safe mode, it first starts charging very slow. Then when you inplug the charger, wait a few minutes and replug it, the reset is done and the battery recovers and starts charging at full power. This happens with phones and powerbanks too. It might be something like this for the Ami too.

Thanks for the informative test Tim. I just did a search for Citroen AMI and Twizzy for 'Turtle Mode' and apparently you are the only ones to have done a video about it. I also found no mention of 'Citroen Ami Turtle Mode' otherwise, so I question if there is an actual Turtle mode or the AMI simply drops to a point that the controller cuts not just cuts off power to protect the battery from damage, but you ran the main battery so low that controller shut down completely and with it not only the drive controller but the charge controller as well (Could they be one in the same?) Another what I would more likely possibility is that the AMI Battery uses a separate BMS (Battery Management System) similar to solar and eBike battery systems that electronically disconnects the battery from the system absent of a separate low main battery voltage protection system, i.e 'Turtle Mode'. If that were the case typically what happens in something like an eBike is that, when the main battery voltage recovers above the BMS cut-off voltage the BMS switches the main output back on. Most good quality BMS units also have a separate circuit and cutoff for charging to protect from over-voltage and over-current charging. The AMI's BMS may use only one cut-off circuit for both low voltage and charging protection so you loose both if you run it too low, but may have a simple and cheap trickle-charge bypass charger to get the main battery back to the point where the Main BMS switches back on. If so, there may be no actually smart Turtle Mode but you start driving slower as the battery drops to the part of the discharge curve where available current drops dramatically. I think it would be helpful and informative to have a main battery volt meter to see how low your battery is actually going and to get some sense of State of charge and when you are going to shut-down. I've been meaning to drop Andy Kirby on YT in the U.K. a message, about the he's done on his Twizzy, and the PowerBox accessory that plugs into the ODBII port and provides battery power data and can be use to increase performance, and I could also ask if his Twizzy has a Turtle mode, as the Twizzy and AMI appear to share similar electrics and systems.

I never let my iPad Mini run low! Keeping it plugged in kind of defeats its portability but then again, I don’t really need to take it anywhere. People in real life would never let their EV battery run out; being stranded isn’t their idea of a good time. Your experiment showed that the Citroen Ami can only go so far before its deadweight and I would say abusing the battery like that shouldn’t be a habit because that can shorten its life. It gave a good idea though of how much range can be expected from the Ami with a normal, daily driving routine.

To prevent battery damage all good chargers will trickle charge a dead flat battery, you can see this on ordinary lithium cell batteries if you charge a really flat one via a usb amp and volt display adapter. They will trickle down when nearly full also. If possible, never completely flatten a battery and if you do charge asap, also do not store for long periods fully charged (or empty). This will lengthen the service life of your battery considerably. Another thing is never ever charge a battery if it's really cold (like below freezing) unless your car is fitted with a battery pre warmer for such conditions. Batteries may have changed but this is what i am told for the batteries i use on my ebikes .

Hey guys! So I just got my Ami last Thursday. Should start by saying the service from Ami UK was dire... Car sat for a couple of weeks at local dealer who didn't know who the Ami was for... (I had to chase Citroen to ask where it was), still no orange pack, incorrect details, wrong information; pre-dated sales invoice, no online links worked so on phone many times, just awful as no-one would ever email back. Dealer even got the Ami delivered without a PDi so they had to prepare it themselves. No adapter to charge at home so awaiting cable from third party. I collected Ami with 3 miles on it and just got battery light on at 6 miles remaining and surprisingly reducing speed to about 13 mph after just 22 miles! (Total odometer reading is 25 miles) and already almost dead. I just drove around the village way below max speed, temp around 9 - 12 degrees. At this rate it won't work out as cannot make a 20 miles trip with confidence. Is this normal? I was super excited to get the Ami despite the massive price increase but the service so far and poor range has really made me consider giving it back. If it reduces down to 13 MPH at 6 miles it's 6 miles that are unusable. Maybe it just isn't suited to milder weather. Can't imagine it in zero degrees. So disappointed 😞Best wishes to you both!

There isnt anything that would significantly impact the main battery, you might find something to charge peripherals but I’ve yet to be convinced it would be worth the faff
Draining the battery completely is something that really should be avoided. Lithium battery technologies are very sensitive to over discharge, which causes irreversible damage to the chemistry of the cells on each occasion this happens. For longevity idealy the battery would only be drained to 30% and charged to 80% (high state of charge can also damaging). Vehicle manufacturers usually put a hiden bit extra % of batteries in to try an mitigate some of this type battery degradation so that the battery achieves it's expected life span. In this instance it is lightly the battery charge level was so low the battery management system had kicked in, and the battery pack had to be carefully nursed safly to a point where it was able to detect that it would be safe to resume charging.

What a disappointment, no turtle on the screen ;-) 😄

That’s how the seats are placed! Passenger seat doesn’t move
Interesting that Ami takes 1744W when charging (Is that the max do you reckon?). My solar panels can do 2KW in clear sunshine.

I’ve seen it draw very close to 2000w but no more
My AMI goes slow (around 17km/h) when have 7km range left. I think the first gen AMI's have different BMS setup from the AMI's 2gen.

Dirty turty 😅
You two boys don't know how much you have livened up a rather miserable summer for me. Carry on regardless. ps more Smut please! ps2 That Turtle you keep featuring is actually a Tortoise, it's probably having a gender Identity crisis right now. ps3 I'm also Cornish Motorcycle Diaries.

Thanks. I’ve mis-specied a Tortoise. Twitter will meltdown!
Is it actually turtle mode or tortoise mode ?

Very good question. I think Turtle

It's actually Tortoise, but the Turtle moniker has stuck from the US market. Alas they often use the term Turtle for both animals despite their being different, as most Americans it is sad to say, can't tell the difference.

So, IF you really want to see a turtle go to the Zoo. In this video we saw a turkey or two. PS Sorry I laughed at you.
Is that a turtle or a tortoise you keep showing?

@@MeandMonAmi Obviously it does. but 5.5Kwh 5500W would require 110 hours of charging. You need something like 1000W output capable generator. Also an 200W solar panel would charge it up 25% on a day rest roughly. So why not put a solar roof on a roof rack? I am wondering if you can reach to DC input after first stage rectifier circuit directly so that charging from solar panel with a proper electronic circuit would be possible to make solar hybrid. cheers by the way. I need three seater of AMI though :)

@@MeandMonAmi sorry you have said 150w and later fixed it in the video.
don't worry if some one ask what you doing you can always say because of all the cameras on the vehicle you doing a scientific review on this little "i am not car" car ^^ i don't know how you guys it call but in Germany we call ist das kein Auto Auto because it is not a car but also not a moped or quad it is even not a kabinenroller it is some where between all this and the Government is also not sure about what is rely is that's the reason why it took so long to come to Germany and also no manufacturer as opel or Citroen doing any kind of advertisement noting at all.

Citroen call it ‘an urban mobility object!’
You shouldn’t go below 10% with this battery chemistry as it will shorten its life. Batteries on ami will not charge if the battery temperature is above 50c, high temperatures are caused by rapid charging and discharging. Also you charge up to 100% and leave on charge for a while once a month (on an ami battery) to allow the bms to balance charge individual cells. But it was fun to watch you ignore all the rules, you rebels😊

TBH It's really valuable to see a genuine 'Run out' test! 👍 I had a Mk1 Nissan Leaf on a test drive for a week about 10 years ago and really put it through it's paces with a 300 mile road trip! Great fun and Sh*t loads of jeopardy too! 😁

I checked the manual, and the Turtle sign comes up when the battery temperature is too low, to indicate reduced performance.
After the display showed zero km, about how many km it took until you were stranded?

It’s such a long time ago I’d have to rewatch the video. We definitely had more range than advertised on dash but eventually we flattened it
