Because they operate through a third party. Doesn't matter where you live you are paying a company for its service. That being said they famously use cheap and unreliable companies for it hence why their are hundreds of thousands of rapes,assaults and abductions .Many of whome have extensive criminal records. The other issue being that if you kill someone in china and run a criminal check in USA it will come up clean.

I just started as a cyclists in Mexico and it's very dangerous. The worst thing: the government tax rate is more as a cyclist than someone on a vehicle. I strongly feel and believe it should be less; even though we are not paying for gas we are buying fuel for our bodies to continue and are in a higher risk on the road than someone on a vehicle.

So everyone has to buy a car, or 2, or 3 - and all of our tax money is spent maintaining this inefficient, expensive, and terrible for our planet infrastructure to keep the automotive industry's pockets lined (as well as our politicians pockets don't forget) It is actually fucking disgusting.

At 15:33 Aleksa runs right past the restaurant where he needs to pick up the food (compare interior decor at 15:53). And the map shown at 15:26 shows that the route given by the app takes him past the restaurant and round to a back entrance (where he struggles to work out how to actually enter the place). So basically, the app is adding a few minutes of unnecessary travel in order to avoid having the delivery worker walk in the front door.

That's fucking crazy and a really interesting observation. It's also odd to me that they're even able to do that because uber's 'pick up' locator for their cab service always seems to want to place it a block away and no matter what you do it locks to some location on the opposite side of the street. No hate for the drivers but the UX on uber apps suck ass, so it's strange that they're even able to specify what door to use - though clearly that's possible or happens in an incidental fashion.

I drove for doordash for a year during COVID, made some money at first and then everything went to shit, my insurance rates went up when they found out I was using it to doordash, gas prices went up, complicated and high taxes… I did the math and was barely breaking even every month. One day I got hit by a car as I was crossing the street to go to the restaurant I had to pick up food from. this reminds me of a story from badempenada about his time doing postmates where he was hit by a car and desperately begged the police to deliver the order for him or allow him to continue injured because he would have been punished for the incident and wouldn’t have been paid. I actually had this once in a smalltown in UK. I was wondering why it took so long for my food to arrive, until I noticed the delivery guy on foot, casually strolling along the road and swinging the bag with my food. So at least he wasn't stressed like Alex. 😅

When I was living in Sydney 2016, opposite from world square. I commuted with my racing bike from the George street to king street in Newtown in just 8 minutes. Downhill I was faster then any car. And drove through pedestrians crossing redlights. Lucky never hit anybody or got hit by a car. It was nuts how reckless I was driving. But I was twice faster compared to the subway. Which have been just 4-5 stations if remember right and took almost 20 minutes.

I used to deliver for UberEats for a time until I realized that I’d make more money working a minimum wage job and that it’d be more consistent too. You hit the nail on the head with the issues you brought up there. Just a few more things I’d like to add to that: 1. Uber wants its drivers to act like both employees and independent contractors. Which is to say, they want to put all the burdens of both arrangements on their drivers and extract all of the benefits of both arrangements for them. 2. Uber drivers are reliant on tips to make ends meet due to ludicrously low base pay for offers. 3. There is no correlation between drivers accepting every offer and them making more money. In other words, Uber’s current system necessitates cherry picking offers in order to not pay out-of-pocket to deliver someone their food. 4. Due to a significant lack of pay, many Uber drivers reject offers that lack tips in order to be available for offers they won’t lose money on. This means that customers are (almost always) forced to tip before receiving their food. 5. Uber allows customers to change their tip up to an hour after receiving their food. Consequently, tip-baiting has become a real problem. This when customers intentionally reduce or fully take away a tip without receiving poor service to justify doing so. 6. Uber hides a portion of a tip above a certain threshold so for all a driver knows, Uber could outright be stealing a portion of their tips. 7. This means that drivers never know if their advertised payout will match their actual income. It *could* be more, but it is more than often less. 8. Customers’ only recourse for poor service is to punish the driver when it is more than possible that the fault lies with the restaurant. For example, drivers don’t have the ability to personally check your order, so an item missing in your sealed bag would be the fault of the restaurant. 9. Restaurants (especially fast food restaurants) don’t often care about the drivers they rely on to deliver their food to their customers. They will intentionally send their delivery drivers through the drive-thru with all their other customers, outright ignore the delivery driver for 10 whole minutes when the food is ready, or just not even make the food until after the delivery driver arrives. 10. Technical support is god awful for drivers. Very rarely can they solve issues in a timely manner (which is vital for drivers because technical issues take up valuable time that drivers need to actually make money for the day). And when Uber is clearly to blame for a technical issue causing their drivers to lose money, they only compensate them the base pay for a delivery (which is $2 btw). 11. In summary, Uber is just about the worst employer I have ever worked for. I encourage anyone considering working for them to look for a minimum wage job instead and I encourage anyone that still wishes to place an order on UberEats (or other food delivery apps) to tip your driver well, until these shady companies are required by law to pay their drivers a fair wage.

Unsure if you're American or Australian but in most occupied cities of Sydney there are trip bonuses which make it worth it, I made $1050 or so after 25 hours of work, only real struggle is driving a poor fuel economic vehicle, being dumb with tax and if you have no quest bonuses then yeah, base pay sucks

In Toronto where I live, uber drivers on bikes downtown often make upwards of 20-30 dollars an hour, and 14-16 on the low end which is minumum wage anyways. The bikes equal or outnumber the cars, and theres tons of immigrants who support their schooling and families off of just delivery gig work its amazing.

In sweden the contracts are so different depending on where you are. Retail is well regulated, industry is good etc. But construction, cleaning, service and the food industry is ass.

Something I'd like to mention since you guys said you didn't understand why someone wouldn't walk around their block to get soup, there's a good chance that the person wasn't physically able, either because they were sick such as flu or chronic illness, or have a disability. Everything you're discovering about Uber is why I only did ride sharing for a day. Do a 5-10 min trip for next to nothing, to then have to wait 20-40 min for another. They're constantly advertising a shortage of drivers, but as far as I could tell they have too many drivers.

The trick to making money in a gig economy like this is, paradoxically, only doing it part time. If you only spend a few hours a day around lunch and dinner time doing food deliveries, and a few hours a week bringing people to and from bars and stuff, it's quite lucrative. The problem is that even though the hourly rate is decent, the number of hours is too low for you to sustain yourself without a second/real job.

Watching this now, two weeks after we (university graduate student workers) voted overwhelmingly to unionize, reminded me how far we still have to go. As much as I loved the video, I also love seeing workers across the globe fighting like hell for a better world. It's one of the few things giving me any hope or optimism for our future. Thank you guys for being so pro-worker.

9:42 in my personal experience I have a chronic illness and sometimes I’m essentially bedridden and my legs are not functioning properly-on these days I’ll typically ask my sister/parents/friends to pick up food for me. On other days I can’t get enough movement in, I used to run a TON. It depends really, but not all of us are constantly lazy haha.

I literally work as a bike courier here and man, 8:13 hits way too close to home Also 9:43 is unbelievably true, I’ve had deliveries that I’ve walked too in under two minutes. But hey, I’m more than happy to get paid for it

TO BE FAIR, my favorite place to get food is about a block and a half from my apartment. I usually do walk there, but if I’m sick I’ll have it delivered (no contact delivery). There’s still an occasional need for delivery even when it’s walking distance. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I lived in nyc for like 2 years and would do walking postmates deliveries most nights. I would just walk around after work and smoke a few joints while doing 2 or 3 deliveries a night. i got paid probably 2-3 bucks per order and it was all close enough I never had to run or anything. it was super casual and just something to do for the most part and then I would get all my tips the next morning. it was a good way to make beer money lol

"Why would you not walk?" - some people have ambulatory issues, some people can't leave the house if they're caring for others, or perhaps self isolating.

Watch Uber steal this idea and market it as a way to stay/get in shape while making money

@@fpedrosa2076 In Australia and New Zealand alot of people do not like the idea of tipping people that work in service/hospitality, because culturally it is seen as the employers responsibility to provide a good enough wage to the employee so that a tip from the customer should not be necessary, when that is not the case is when there's a problem

What a fascinating video. Genius way to get everyone's attention to the pressing issue. If someone had made a video explaining (from behind the desk) how and why Uber eats is terrible, and discriminating towards delivery persons I couldn't finish the video. But you guys went the extra mile to show us what it is like to walk (or should I say run) in a delivery person's shoes. Great video, Kudos.

I’ve ubered food from across the street before. Not out of laziness, but because i cannot legally leave my place of work when there are only 2 staff members on site. So if I want food I didn’t bring from home it has to be ordered not matter how close. Very grateful to those drivers ❤❤❤

It was created by a duck farmer Then a wealthy Austrian salesperson invests and takes it to the west. He completely westernized the drink and then took credit for it (not necessarily his fault) Redbull's majority shareholders (51%) are the Thai dude/ his family Redbull at the moment outsources every single thing, there is absolutely nothing that gets made or packaged in Austria Yet the company is considered Austrian, most people think it is Austrian and credit Dietrich more than the actual person who made it very fucking successful before Dietrich The fact that his name comes first in Wikipedia before Chalerm really pisses me off

@@H2o3G2a to be fair, you have to give the Austrian guy credit for his marketing genius and being able to make it a global powerhouse company. Red Bull pretty much single-handedly sustains all “extreme” sports like skating & BMX, and they’re really good at using these for marketing.

Ive ordered from places almost next door to me because of the crazy deals UberEats sometimes puts on, and at least whenever Ive tried a lot of the promotions dont allow pickup, theyre delivery only. So I can get food physically delivered to my door by another person for cheaper than if i walked to the store myself.

The issue with it refusing to acknowledge your orders being delivered/app breaking is insanely bad. When I doordashed for a summer there were multiple incidents where an idiot put the wrong address in, so I had to go deliver them their food miles away, but it wouldn’t let me finish the delivery until I drove to the original listed address. There were other incidents where I’d arrive to pick up an order, only to find out it was placed an hour ago and sent out, so I’d have to spend 20+ minutes waiting on the phone for support to cancel my order, going through three levels of Indian call centers before finally getting to their American supervisor who actually spoke English. Oh, and I ended up actually losing money including gas, and the fact that on my last day a crazy polish woman ruined my rear bumper in a hit and run crash, for whcih I was never compensated despite giving the cops her license plate. There’s also the countless times they sent me into gang-ran blocks 5 miles away from the restaurant.

Way cheaper than paying Americans, especially if you want it available outside of American office hours For the most part they don't actually own the center, they're subcontracting it, and so the people answering have very limited knowledge and power, which makes dealing with them very frustrating

@@sl4y8r76 with doordash the process goes chat with an Indian -> call with an Indian if the chat worker is too stupid to help -> call with an American manager working from home because the first guy was obviously useless and can’t speak good English.

Good point on the waiting for more orders, I work at a grocery store and we have Instacart shoppers who come through doing deliveries or set up orders to be picked up curbside, I can recall a few days where there was 5 or so shoppers all sitting around waiting for something to show up.

That's why you have to work more than 1 app. Also if you are on foot you are not going to make good money. This video is a bit misleading. I make good money on bicycle. between 50%-100% more than minimum wage

I just wanted to point out that people aren’t necessarily “lazy” for ordering through an app, a lot of disabled people use it for instance when they can’t because of pain or fatigue, that or someone who is sheltering because of being immunocompromised and can’t risk going to a restaurant. A lot of people pit workers against disabled people without thinking about how so many disabled people are workers or were workers because they were disabled from work. Anywho, love that I found your guys’ channel, I always got the inkling Alex was a cool dude ideologically and I’m glad to know that was true haha.

13:18 Hey that’s the staff strike at my Uni a few weeks ago, I was there! Thanks for coming and covering it, it has been difficult to even get students to understand the importance of supporting their teachers on strike. We have another strike coming up on October 19th if you’re keen to get the word out about it even more!

This actually happens on a smaller scale at Arizona State University. things may have changed since around 2008, but back then NO cars for delivery were allowed on campus, and campus is MASSIVE. Its multiple city blocks, bigger than most housing developments. So if you are anywhere on campus and deliver a pizza, the driver has to drive to the nearest parking lot (far away) get out, then just walk to you. which may be about a mile of walking each way or more depending on how close they could actually get. If they biked the whole way, they could bike onto campus, but they drive for every other order so they never have bikes. Some delivery places refused to deliver on campus because none of the drivers wanted to get out and walk. they usually got no tips too because no one had any money back then. gas was insanely expensive too for Arizona at the time and a lot of delivery places don't pay for gas (or any car expenses). For the most part, it was students that would do on foot "deliveries" though. I would often see one person from a party or group just walk to hungry howies or somewhere else, buy a pick up order, then walk back. The total on foot trip was always over 2 or 3 miles.

I do delivery when I’m home alone with a sick kid or I’m home alone sick. I did more deliveries when my kids were very little as well. Trying to run a short errand with little children is a nightmare I would rather pay more for something then deal with the ordeal of dragging a small child with you.

Hey Alex I’m the guy wearing green jacket ordering McDonalds at that day. My friend’s drinks and burger are all fucked but mine was miraculously intact, can’t blame you for that lol Btw we did spot you when you are over the street and talk about why you are not riding a bike, but you came sweaty with a dead face so we said nothing lol 😂

I don't know how it is in Australia but in Portugal, many times, you can get better prices than going yourself to the restaurant from sales like buy 1 get 2. So it's not so simple as "people are lazy". Love your work guys, please keep going :D

i know many restaurants hike their prices up on food delivery apps as the companies take commission. The restaurants find that they are not earning as much per order. If you want to support a restaurant, it's best to just go pick it up yourself. Saves you money and also give more profit for the restauraunt.

yeah theres been a few times ive made use of ubereats deals to get deliveries from places within walking distance. had a 50% off grocery deal so even with the ubereats markup the discount was enough to make it the cheapest option even with delivery fee. sometimes even works out well for pickup orders where the discount offsets the markup.

Love the false economy of this justification. Uber does this to encourage more people to repeat-custom. Deals like this just snowball the problem.

it's absolutely heartbreaking to see how many motorcycle drivers die in my country to make ends meet. Most of them aren't even employed and sometimes are underaged and don't have a license, meaning they get no insurance payment in case of injury. The delivery fees are not worth someone's life, even then the APPs are eating like half of their earnings

Incredible video in terms of exposing the horrible working conditions these people have to deal with, but also watching that McDonald's delivery was hilarious

The most impressive thing about this whole process is that Boy & Boy actually read the fine text.

Really happy to see one of my favorite KZreadrs standing up and talking about how exploitative delivery apps are. Even if you own a car they're still next to impossible to make money off of and the people who own the companies only keep lowering the base pay we get. I wouldn't be suprised if by 2024 they stop giving us base pay and just make us work off of tips

An endorsement for a Union is actually really great of you. Unions are an amazing thing for workers and are being underappreciated in many countries so that was genuinely amazing of you!

In Vienna (or Austrian cities in general) we have special "bike roads" in between of sideways and "normal" roads. If you can't afford your own bike you can even rent one from the city for 1€ per day.

when i delivered food their were times i thought i spilled their drink all over the food, very relatable to run away as fast as possible after the delivery, having them call back to me from the door for that or any of the consistent mistakes McDonald's would make is something i relive in nightmares

This is actually really interesting. In Cambridge, England there are a lot of dedicated cycle lanes and so the delivery there is pretty good (and hopefully safer for the delivery people)

Big issue with the cycle lanes in Cambridge is that they are not raised from the road, and routinely just stop and are force merged into the bus lanes (most cyclists I know just use the road). Dutch model is honestly best, slightly raised from the main road.
