my dad was a guitarist and died a couple of months ago. I played at his funeral because he always loved to hear me playing the guitar. The main reason why Stairway to Heaven is 'banned' in many guitar stores is because of a movie released years ago. The reality is that the song isn't forbidden to play, it's just very overplayed by people trying out guitars. You're not going to get kicked out of any guitar stores if you begin playing this iconic song. -c&p

They might not kick you out, but because of Wayne's World it kinda became a cultural trope that guitar stores enforce even if they don't really care. It's an inside joke on a national level and they'll make you stop just so they can laugh about it too their buddies that they had to stop someone from playing stairway just as much as you'll go to your buddies and say you played stairway in a guitar shop.

Yea dude it’s from Wayne’s world, but that wasn’t just a arbitrary joke put into the movie. A lot of guitar shops will ask you not to play stairway and not allow you to continue to play the guitars if you persist. It’s not as common now, but back in the day it was a riff that every beginner learned and so it ended up being played constantly throughout the day. Same with sweet child of mine, smoke on the water, nothing else matters etc. Those riffs all ended up on the banned list by the employees so that they don’t end up losing their minds. I imagine it’s different now in 2023, but in the 90s when I first started playing, if you started playing those songs you got a hand on fret board and a friendly warning not to do it again.

This is so representative of Filipinos in the US. I once did a classical guitar gig for a party at a Filipino bakery and when I finished playing the Filipinos hanging around asked me if I sing. I told them that I do, and they started making requests. I ended up leading them all in a resounding version of Sweet Home Alabama. We had a blast.

That was beautiful! Thanks for sharing!!! I can only imagine how long it really took to record all of the parts as taking the time to tune all of the different guitars (especially the 12-string) would have taken a while as no guitar at GC is ever in tune!

Man I keep coming back every now and then to listen to this. This is the best stairway to heaven( remix or whatever you call it ) I have seen . Doesn't even need vocals . We need more songs without the vocals. I think I'm onto something

I went to guitar center once and started to play "Smoke on the water". Within seconds (God I shake everytime I recall this) the manager came running up to me with a pair of bolt cutters and swatted the guitar from my hands. I tried to stand, but he boldly said, "Sit down". Then he said, "left hand please" as he pulled the handles on the bolt cutters apart. I could see what was taking place. As I looked around, I could see the employees and customers all had tiki torches and pitchforks and were circling around me like a pack of wild dogs. They began to chant, "No Smoke, No Stairway! No Smoke, No Stairway! I tried to apologize, but the manager said, "Its too late, Fool. You have tainted the walls with your stomach turning soundwaves." I quickly stood up and made a dash for the door. I made it to the parking lot after loosening the grips of a few patrons. As I ran across the lot, rocks and bottles whizzed past my head and I could still hear that wicked chant, "No Smoke, No Stairway" slowly fade away. I never went back there again. In fact, I had constructive surgery on my hand to not be able to play the opening chord to stairway to heaven. I would have done the same to Smoke on the water, but that chord is used in many other songs. I just have to be careful what and where I play.

I miss going into guitar center, seeing lots of guitars and basses i wanted, not worring about making sure no one is too close, no makes needed, and not having to have the staff wipe down ans sanitize everything down.
