We Moved into an Off Grid Mountain Hut (Living in the Slovakian Wilderness)

We moved in to this idyllic off grid mountain hut in the Slovakian wilderness. We found this remote secluded log cabin online and instantly fell in love. After travelling nonstop recently, we needed a place to relax and unwind, but also, we wanted to try something brand new, challenge ourselves, and find out if we can survive up here alone. Living in the wild isn't something we are used to at all and moving in to our mountain hut was a learning curve to say the least. Did we mention we have no running water? 😀 Join us for an incredible month in the Tatra (Vysoke Tatry) mountains, Slovakia, the heart of Europe, as we learn to live, cook, wash and pass the time in our new oof grid house. In this month, we learnt a great deal about ourselves. Welcome to our new remote mountain home.

Yes but I would get some barrels to collect rainwater and build a toilet close to the cabin, probably a well too☺️ I personally don’t have a problem with discomfort, I can start a fire and get used very fast with any situation but there’s one thing I can’t deal with and that’s not having a shower of sorts/the option to wash myself.

My husband and I go off grid every year for two weeks...not in Slovakia but remote. I find it helps us to re-center and reconnect. We love it and I hope to be able to do this more some day. I'm so happy you two were able to do this for yourselves! What a beautiful place! 💜 Thank you for sharing.

I am from Slovakia, I have always been living in cities there and I consider myself more of a city person rather than nature person, but this video really triggered something in me and I feel like I need to experience something like this in my country. Thank you for this video and I really appreciate that you chose Slovakia for this experience.

My wife and I spent a fortnight in Strbske Pleso in May 2002. We had snow at least once! We thoroughly enjoyed it. Slovakia is so beautiful and it is a pity that so few tour operators have organised holidays there. Eating out was inexpensive in those days. This could be an alternative to an German/Austrian alpine holiday.

Regrettably, I am nearly 80, and am therefore too old for what would be more like an adventure. I also enjoyed staying in Zabljak in Montenegro. Again, it is so beautiful that it is a pity that so few tour operators have organised holidays there. We wish you well in your new enterprise.

Thank you Julia and Matt, made me stop and think, and to start appreciating and recognizing the many blessings I have. I remember when I used to stop life and watch the sun rise or set. Time i started doing that again. I have seen the moon turn a river into liquid moonlight for 8000ft, I have watched the full moon reflect of the still waters of many lakes in Florida, where I live. To see the glory of lightning as it flashed from one side of the horizon to the other in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Storm. Thank you for bringing those memories back. Thank you for helping me to again stop, and view the many wonders of God's creation. I salute you!

Thanks for your beautifull video and your words. I had tears in my eyes watching this video. I have the same feelings when I’m in the cabin, I love to be there for a long time enjoying every moment. You can find there peace and yourself as you tell. Our children say they run very fast in the night from the eco toilett as well. I saw in 40years wolf once (they are shy) and bears many times. Dears very often. My parents bought this cabin 40years ago and I have lot´s of memories on this place. I never saw this cabin from upper perspective. Beautifull view. Thanks for sharing. You are really brave to stay so long and enjoy this place this way. I love our guests, finding beautifull moments in simply things. Relaxing this way. I wish you many great trips in the future and really thanks for this video. I love it. ❤️

Dear Matt and Julia, this quiet and peaceful video has left me with such a calm, soothed feeling, heart of my heart - I deeply feel the rejuvenation and replenishment and now I have a perfect idea of how it would feel to have such a perfect month of reunion with boundless nature and with oneself. I love every one of your videos but this one may be my favorite to date (outside of the wonderful family videos) because of the deep feeling of serenity it leaves me with just from your sharing. Much love, Andrea P.S. I saw a bear at the side of the road in Tucson just outside of town the other day - I never see that, and it was the same day I saw a double rainbow! Sharing the blessing. 🙂❤

This video was lovely and inspiring to watch...thank you for it. I am just one generation away from living on an isolated farm with no running water or electricity, as that is how my father grew up on the rolling prairies of central Alberta, Canada. I remember loving to spend part of the summer there with my little brother and grandparents when I was a young child, as I had little idea how tough it could be (with very cold winters and very hot summers), or how much work it was, for my grandparents. (I grew up with modern conveniences on the western edge of Portland, Oregon.) For both of you, living without running water in that amazing cabin on the steep but beautiful foothills of theTatra Mountains during a mid-Spring month was obviously not only glorious but a lot of work. I so appreciate your sharing that month with us. Although I have travelled much of the world, that travel has included few stays in one place longer than ten days (except as an exchange student in Switzerland and the U.S.S.R), and watching this video was a real treat which I will repeat many times. Maybe, between the trip-leading you are going to be doing in your new business (I hope to join you on one of those trips when that becomes possible), you will decide to have one-month interludes like this in remote but spectacular places.

Glad you took some peaceful time out for yourselves Julia and Matt. I often wondered how you kept on travelling and vlogging seemingly continuously 😳 without some time ‘away’ from it all! I would imagine living without the mod-cons does make for a busier time but a mindful one. I missed this vlog at the time for some reason so it was a lovely surprise! Thanks for taking us 🍦🍦🥰🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

This was such a sweet video. Thanks for visiting our little country. Your previous video's title (about Bratislava) is actually even more fitting than you'd expect since if you travel to East Slovakia, you'll see how it's way more Eastern European. Slovakia really is a bridge between the West and East.

A high pressure washer would be able to pump water from the spring to the house. The spray nozzle would not be used, and the hose could be a small inner diameter but would have to be long. An IBC tote (intermediate bulk container) next to the house could be filled.

The problem is that the pipe would run across the grounds of multiple owners. It wouldn’t be easy to sort it out. And then winter freezing would be another challenge. Collecting rain water seems an easier option but that also needs to be done properly in order to use it as drinking water.

When you uploaded this video to KZread I was working taking photos of performers who were appearing at an audition in the city, I watched it in parts during the minutes that I could escape from work, now at home I could see it in its entirety...it's probably one of the best videos you have uploaded!! What a fantastic experience it must have been to live for a month in that cabin. When several weeks ago I saw the photos of the interior, and since it was not winter, I thought that you would not need to use the stove but I see that it was cold anyway. Many here call these types of heating "Russian Stove". Well, I'm looking forward to the video of the meals you cooked in the cabin!! bye Love from Buenos Aires!! PS. Very demonstrative of you, the titles of the stack of books in 4.39
