Another garden tip: DO NOT underestimate how far squash vines run. Expect each plant to try to run 10-20ft from where you planted it. This includes watermelon and pumpkin.

@@acmeacres yeah pumpkin can be extremely deadly to all plants around it. They are nutrient suckers for sure and they get invasive sometimes.

Makes them great for the three sisters gardening method though! Corn, then once that's 4-6inches tall you plant vining beans, then after a couple weeks you plant winter squash like acorn or pumpkins to protect the soil from the sun and elements. Plus you can always tip the vines and push energy to other growth if you don't want it growing in a certain direction

Love the no dig garden, but I'd suggest also getting a truckload of woodchips (like from when they remove and grind up the trees) and just pile that about 3-6 inches deep over your topsoil/ manure. It'll help keep your soil from drying out, which means less watering!!

I highly recommend getting a snake identification guide if you guys aren’t pretty familiar with your native snakes. Especially since you’re on so much land and going to be gardening, which attracts rodents, your property is going to be the perfect place for snakes with lots of food and cover. your state has 6 venomous species, 5 of which being pit vipers ( eastern diamondback rattlesnake, Pygmy rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth) and 1 elapid (eastern coral snake, they are related to cobras and mambas) You’d be surprised how many snake bites happen in the garden, as that’s where snakes like to wait for rodents to come by. That said, snakes will never seek confrontation and death by snake bite is incredibly rare, only 3-5 die in the US each year. That’s less than deaths from falling out of bed. Please be safe! -A Florida man who loves snakes :)

Planting lavender and rosemary along with the stuff you plan to grow should help deter deer from snacking on your plants, its a safe and non toxic way to stop deer from feasting on all your hard work . love seeing the progress, cant wait to see how everything goes for you guys.

  • @joshuamc96

For the gardens, you can also get construction paper (you can buy it in big rolls) if you can't get enough cardboard. Some herbs like rosemary and sage help keep herbivores away. Do not plant anything from the mint family, you'll never get rid of it unless you torch the whole garden. In the meantime before you cover with cardboard you could buy some ground cover seed, like clovers and rye or wheat. Then chop/now that down and cover with cardboard. You'll create a rich bottom layer for the worms and beneficial bacteria and fungi which your plants will be able to grow into. If the soil is hard I'd recommend even adding like beet/radish seeds with the ground cover to help loosen the soil up some and add some good organic material. For the sides of your raised road/path where they dug out the hill, you should get it planted with some grass to help limit erosion and/or put some big rocks around them. If the soil has been pushed up too far on the trees there is a chance that can be choked out and will rot where the soil sits in the bark which can kill them, not a guarantee to happen though. You can always cut them down and replace them with new trees planted at the right level (fruiting or not).

Grew up gardening in Georgia, moles and voles will devastate a garden. Putting down half inch chicken wire under the cardboard might help, but if they come in from the sides, it might not. Deer can jump 10ft fence. That is why double fences are recommended to keep them out. The inner fence can double as a trellis for vines.

Toonz, please don't film yourself driving a couple minutes at a time driving without having any hands on the steering wheel to do other stuff than driving, while driving (tbh, it's better to just never do, on or off camera but yeah), it's not only dangerous to do but it also potentially influences people to do this as well, and some people can barely drive a car using both hands as is. That being said tho!.. I really like this vibe of footage going on, and Genay's camerawork and everything is very good and entertaining as well, and ofcourse the intro theme is so much fun to watch as well, it's so well animated! Not sure if it's already been said but a gardening tip I learned from my housemate recently: if you find squirrels and such getting at your plants (especially if you do corn), throw cayenne pepper on them while they're growing! Squirrels don't like spice, so putting it on the growing plant teaches them not to bite it because it's too hot for them. :) (Of course, that also depends on how much you're growing and how much pepper you'd go through! Haha.)

Buy yourself some good tools/machines. If your going to build a garden (like a big one) you'll need a post hole driver. Might as well just buy one since you'll be putting years of work into the property. Also I commented in your last Video BUY A BOBCAT/SKID STEER. Seriously one of the best machines money can buy, so incredibly versatile. Other than that you should make an outdoor kitchen/patio for Grilling outside, always wanted one but never made it. Something we did at our place was make a golf green and its pretty sweet. But you need special mowers, grass, and have to make it a certain way. They are alot of work to maintain but worth the time if your into golf. Other than that love the videos guys keep up the good work.👍

Lots of laws and work practices that need to be followed so that you aren't left with any asbestos behind for you guys to breathe in. From the couple shots from inside your house, it looks like they will do a good job. They wrap the rooms up like that because the rooms have to be air tight so that all the air is pulled through a HEPA filter to capture all the fibers while they're working. Your contactor was actually talking about "friable" asbestos which is when the material can be crushed easily and release the fibers into the air. Worse than dealing with "non-friable types". Stuff like your floor tiles are non-friable, and the dry wall and texturing is friable. Love the new property, super jealous! Good luck with the new place and channel, hit me up if you need any questions answered about the abatement!

The first few minutes had Mike Rowe in my head, going "today, on Dirty Jobs: asbestos removal..." I loved the drone footage! I'm not sure what would grow well in North Carolina, or what you're interested in growing, but to start, a couple of easy things are green beans (I like the blue lake variety), radishes, potatoes, and tomatoes, plus rhubarb if you like it!

When it comes to the garden if NC is anything like Alabama the squirrels and rabbits will ravage your crops as much as the deer will something I’ve had to deal with for years luckily they do make some sprays that’ll stop the deer from eating everything up. That being said I’m so happy you all decided to share your experiences with all of us!

back when we had some property i found that the best gravel for a dirt road is caliche gravel. that stuff gets real hard after being packed down. i worked with it on a medium sized frontloader and backhoe tractor. i had to break up a pile that had been sitting around for half a month. was like concrete almost. If i had any advise for you it'd be that.

Hey guys. Been watching toonzie for a minute. So I love how you’re branching out channel and content-wise. Can’t wait to see what you all have planned and see it become real. The only suggestion I might make is to maybe reach out to Matt Carricker from Demoranch and Off the Ranch channels. I watched their abandoned mansion series and it was like This old house on crack. I bet there are tons of ideas, mistakes and content structure that you might gain from watching. Plus I think Matt was able to wrangle a “few” sponsored products that end up in their final build and saved them a butt-load of money. Maybe he might be open for a little collab action. Anyway good luck with everything keep up the good content.
