Tonight we show you our new grill and test out the cast iron grates to see how well they make sear marks. The steak is a ribeye and the grill is the Char-griller Smokin' Champ!

The reason we didn’t put the fire starter underneath the grill grates holding the charcoal is because I know a lot of the viewers won’t have this type of setup and might only have a flat surface to put their charcoal on 👍

I got a CG in 2003, but had to leave it at my last house. I noticed that the grates are a tad thinner than they used to be. They used to have closer to rectangle profile, but now the bars are a bit more triangle shaped--but the triangle does give cleaner grill lines. I'd say be careful about lighting the chimney in it b/c the rods on the ash pan do have a tendency to warp a bit--although as long as the welds don't break, it still works fine. I got a good cover from Mel's bbq covers, and I stored my grates inside (to keep the rust off) and it was holding up just fine. Really good height for grilling, I liked the short-order-cook feeling of grilling on it, which is more comfortable than dealing with the smaller weber kettle (where the grate is also sunk deeper into the grill). The only negative is that it wasn't remotely air-tight, so any coals I used would fully burn away to ash.

The bad thing about those wire brushes is that it strips the seasoning of the cast iron grate. A wood scraper is less abrasive and helps to keep intact.

I do so that the wood can have air to fuel the fire, but if it starts to get too smoky or too hot I'll close it a little. I'm not the best smoker in the world but keep it simple and you'll get great results!

That's weird, no I didn't. But the reason it's less expensive than others is because the metal is thinner. It certainly won't last as long as some pricier ones. Last time I was at Home Depot (yesterday) it looked slightly redesigned.

  • @TonightWeGrill

I need to do an update but here’s my rundown: for the money it’s still good. But the grill grates need a lot of upkeep or they will rust easily. Mine started to bow out in the middle making the middle grate fall onto the coals very easily. But again, for $200 it was a lot of grill. Id recommend buying a smaller one unless you need one this big. This was pre Covid when we cooked for a lot of friends and family. For normal dinner cooking, use a smaller grill (as I do 90% of the time lol)

@@TonightWeGrill ok. Yeah, the reviews I was reading stated excessive rust inside and out, paint peeling (especially on the lid) and the lid actually warping. Lots of complaints about thin metal. The ones my Home Depot currently has seem to some pretty heavy duty metal. The lid is quite heavy on its own. They were initially $279 at the beginning of summer, eventually came down to $249 and now they are on blow out price of like $200 out the door.
