Oh hey! Here is the cover for the grill: amzn.to/2Sb1sEL. Don't leave it uncovered in the rain because it will rust eventually. Also, using that link to buy ANYTHING on amazon in the next 24 hours helps our channel tremendously and doesn't cost you a penny extra!!! :)
Tonight we show you our new grill and test out the cast iron grates to see how well they make sear marks. The steak is a ribeye and the grill is the Char-griller Smokin' Champ!

The reason we didn’t put the fire starter underneath the grill grates holding the charcoal is because I know a lot of the viewers won’t have this type of setup and might only have a flat surface to put their charcoal on 👍
I got a CG in 2003, but had to leave it at my last house. I noticed that the grates are a tad thinner than they used to be. They used to have closer to rectangle profile, but now the bars are a bit more triangle shaped--but the triangle does give cleaner grill lines. I'd say be careful about lighting the chimney in it b/c the rods on the ash pan do have a tendency to warp a bit--although as long as the welds don't break, it still works fine. I got a good cover from Mel's bbq covers, and I stored my grates inside (to keep the rust off) and it was holding up just fine. Really good height for grilling, I liked the short-order-cook feeling of grilling on it, which is more comfortable than dealing with the smaller weber kettle (where the grate is also sunk deeper into the grill). The only negative is that it wasn't remotely air-tight, so any coals I used would fully burn away to ash.
Ramble away brother! Just bought a smoking champ today. I will be subscribing to your channel!
My wife got me on used but it’s nice as hell I can’t wait to cook on it
Cool vid bro. Hope to see more

How is it?
I think I'm going to switch from the Nexgrill to the Smokin Champ now!
lways remember season your grill every few uses i keep cooking oil on outside help prevent rust def season cast iron grates helps prevent that sticking canola pam spray works for it all very well
The bad thing about those wire brushes is that it strips the seasoning of the cast iron grate. A wood scraper is less abrasive and helps to keep intact.

Very good point my friend! I tend to re-season them after each use but the majority of people will not. Thank you for commenting!
Great video bud, when you smoke do you keep the side vent open as well? Going to be smoking some picana in a few days

I do so that the wood can have air to fuel the fire, but if it starts to get too smoky or too hot I'll close it a little. I'm not the best smoker in the world but keep it simple and you'll get great results!
I have the same grill.... love it... I smoke meat all the time on it..
How come you didn’t use the side smoker box
I use newspapers for starting my coals in my chimney

It definitely works in a pinch, I'm just not a fan of all the tiny pieces of burnt paper that fly around.
Did you have issues with the lid not opening after pit got hot? Returned mine due to lid not opening after pit was hot. The bottom barrel started to bow out and didn’t allow lid to open.

That's weird, no I didn't. But the reason it's less expensive than others is because the metal is thinner. It certainly won't last as long as some pricier ones. Last time I was at Home Depot (yesterday) it looked slightly redesigned.

@@TonightWeGrill yea I had to return it because anytime temp went over 325 the bottom half would bend out and not let lid open. I ended up getting the one right above it the Competition one.
Nice video. Did you season your grill before first use?

Yeah I treat the grill grates just as I would a cast iron skillet. I smooth them with sandpaper and then bake them with olive oil. Kent Rollins has great videos on seasoning cast iron. Thanks for watching!

Haha I kind of stole that from Dear Meat For Dinner, the old one where he's skinning the alligator and Sara's pig is chasing the dogs. Hahaha I'm glad someone else found that funny!
Try apple juice if you want a nice crust.
Just put paper towel covered with olive oil under the charcoal chimney and that will get it going.

The only thing about that is the paper towel specs tend to fly around as it burns. I don't mind paying for the firestarters, but that is definitely a good tip when you're in a pinch!

@Brandon’s Grillin Livin ‘n Chillin I saw on a weber page to try cotton balls soaked in either Vaseline or alcohol. I opted for alcohol and it is a super cheap clean way to start your fires. I have been using the weber wax cubes but the ones I already have are gonna be my last ones
I had that grill. Best $200 you’ll spend.
Lowes is $166.00

It will for sure, I just don't like the idea of the ink and whatnot getting into the coals and then perhaps into the food. I only use all natural fire-starters. Great tip when you're in a bind and don't have them though!

I won’t, hard to replace multiple 6 figures. Thanks for your douchery today!
Showed about the char griller XD you bought the cheap $300 1 for $1 should have spent an extra 200 bucks
You didn't start your charcoal properly.
I love metal bristles with my steaks too
Please do not use metal wire brushes, ESPECIALLY not while actively cooking. Look up wire brush bbq in throat!
I’ve been looking at these but a lot of the reviews are terrible.

I need to do an update but here’s my rundown: for the money it’s still good. But the grill grates need a lot of upkeep or they will rust easily. Mine started to bow out in the middle making the middle grate fall onto the coals very easily. But again, for $200 it was a lot of grill. Id recommend buying a smaller one unless you need one this big. This was pre Covid when we cooked for a lot of friends and family. For normal dinner cooking, use a smaller grill (as I do 90% of the time lol)

@@TonightWeGrill ok. Yeah, the reviews I was reading stated excessive rust inside and out, paint peeling (especially on the lid) and the lid actually warping. Lots of complaints about thin metal. The ones my Home Depot currently has seem to some pretty heavy duty metal. The lid is quite heavy on its own. They were initially $279 at the beginning of summer, eventually came down to $249 and now they are on blow out price of like $200 out the door.
Just found out this guy is actually a left-wing pro-Biden radical. Unsubscribed! Nevertheless, let me leave everyone with this… Let’s Go Brandon!
