Fellow Texan here. I just picked one of these off the curb in my neighborhood last week. It’s almost complete and I’m treating and removing scale rust that’s built up inside. Once the scale is removed I’m going to use a product called Ospho to convert any remaining rust and it functions as a rust prohibiting primer. It is grill safe btw and can be used inside and outside.

Nice job brother! I have a Char Griller 5650 and have had it for 2 years running and it still looks brand new. Poor ownership is what causes people to throw money out the window when it comes to a grill. I maintain mine every couple of smokes. It only takes me about 45 minutes, start to finish. It also helps having a cover for it as well.
I really enjoyed this video! My neighbor moved out and gave me a char- grill! We would shared the grill. Now the dog will be happy to have her grilled hot dog, also. Up cycling at its best. Thanks.

I have gotta say the spare parts they sell on the website kinda amazes me. I replaced my old grill because I can't find some dumb parts like replacement handles and the shelf that holds the coals is rusted out. Nice to see a company interested in repairing their old stuff and not just selling you new stuff.

I have the same grill that I bought through FB Marketplace for $70. It's been a great grill/smoker and a perfect companion to my PK Grill. Mine was in better shape than the one your rescued so I plan to clean and paint it. I was loosing too much smoke around the lids so I added some grill insulation tape and it's a well sealed smoker. Thanks for making the effort to save a great grill from being recycled. Thanks brother!

I bought a char griller 5050 with the firebox for 100 dollars on Craigslist. And I got a brand new propane connector in the package that I was able to return to Home Depot for 28.00 credit which I used to buy a charcoal chimney and some charcoal. The guy also gave me a bag of cherry wood and a partial bag of kings Ford as well as all the tongs and spatulas etc. now that’s what I call a lick. Perfect working order.

I got one and I can hardly use it because everyone else likes to run to my place to use my grill. Shocker is they maintain it better than I do.😆 I did give it a good scrap, cleaning and seasoning today to start the season off right.
Great job. I bought the non-smoker version after my house burned down in 2005. I kept it under a car port out of the weather. I just gave it to a less fortunate couple in much better shape than that one, and bought a new Char-griller Champ. It's a great grill/smoker. I don't grill or smoke for large groups.

learned a trick to cleaning rust from cast iron (this grill has cast iron grates). 1 to 1 lemon juice and water. spray on let sit 2 minutes scrub with steel wool and rinse. repeat if necessary. do not leave on for over 3 minutes at a time. spray with grapeseed oil to reseason.

How lucky you were. I have one just like that too. Had mine for 6-7 years. I had to move the whole thing 180° in the stand to get the wheels on the right side like your old grill (which was probably jealous). My firebox ash pan is basically wasted, hot box a few times. The smoke box ash pan next to the firebox burned the hangers right off. I'm about to do a makeover making the pan I use for water to be the baffle to direct the heat away from the grates. I'm thinking of putting lava rocks on the sides of the smokebox ash pan and extend the exhaust pipe down to the grate and extend up from the top about 20". As far as the smokebox inlet, I left it full open, better air flow for cleaner smoke. If I need to close it off, I shove foil in the holes. Raising the smoke box ash pan is null and void. At it lowest is still great for grilling ribeye. I get a good reverse sear from having fire on the right and bring the steak up to temp on the left. But as far as painting it, I get better results from spraying nonstick spray inside and out.

Just goes to show that a cleaning and seasoning after each cook will prolong the life of it. Hard to rust if you apply a coat of oil. That poor grill was rode hot and put away wet many times. Glad you could save it. I just bought my first one and am watching everything I can about it. Now I see what total neglect will do to it.
Nice Job. I appreciate Videos like this , I just got one of these given to me about the same shape.

holey sh!t ! i can't believe this! dude, you rock. about 1pm yesterday i just started doing a rebuild of a 30" char-broil. basically the predecessor of the char-griller wrangler (no firebox tho dangit). i'm doing exactly what your doing, but what really freaked me was i have and am using the EXACT SAME DRILL! trip out. black n decker firestorm. i still even have the firestorm drill bit pack. ^-^ it's 5:11 am now. gonna take the base off and put the wheels on the correct end in a few. got a new 5 1/2" wheel and a new fire grate coming from char-griller to replace what's trashed. also upgrading my sand blast cabinet. today i'll be blasting the grates and any thing else that'll fit inside. planning on sticking the siphon gun in a bucket of sand to hit the barrel like i did for a vintage toolbox resto i did a couple months ago. going full OCD on this thing. the whole thing is getting stripped, cleaned, painted and seasoned down to the nuts and bolts. you definitely scored. thanks for posting. you put a smile on my face and now i'm feeling a lot better about this resto. wish i had a decent cam. anyhu, FIRE IT UP! =^-^=

I wish I had picked one up when they were $200, they're almost $400 today. But I found a used one locally for $80, and now I'm going to take it apart, completely refurbish it, and maybe add some mods to make it a more effective offset smoker (since I still have my Weber kettle for grilling purposes). Does the spray paint not burn off or smell weird when you cook?
@BKCCooks
2 жыл бұрын
It will not burn off unless you get the grill extremely hot. It doesn't give off any smell at all. Be sure you only paint the outside.
did you clean the outside of the grill before painting it or is that not necessary? I might have to pick up a can of this stuff. Great video, Exactly what I was looking for. Also Shoutout from another Texan

I wiped it down after all the scraping. If the exterior of your grill is greasy, I recommend cleaning it so you don’t have a problem with paint adhesion.

Great question. It’s hard to say because there are so many factors at play. Weather, amount of cooks and sun exposure are the main culprits. I would say you could get at least a year of moderate use if you care for it properly.
