We got a 1968 C50 ramp truck project

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On this episode my buddy Wesley brings his two car hauler up from Mississippi so we can pick up my new project. I buy a 1968 Chevrolet C50 that's in decent shape with plans to build a ramp truck to haul the hot rods.

The airplane that was flying over that you took a quick video of is the C47 that lead the invasion of paratroopers on D-Day on June 6th, 1944. It was called "That's all Brother" it was restored to its war time period paint scheme for the invasion of France. If you stop the video at 9:20 you can see the 3 stripes that were painted onto the fuselage so the allied ships and other planes could identify that they were friendly planes when returning to England from France. It's the only flying C47 with those markings currently flying.

Spent many a harvest (wheat, corn, milo, soybeans, sunflowers) clocking miles on our 69 C50 starting at 14yo. 2 speed vacuum, double shifting. Dad always said "know your corners, use your gears, not your brakes"

A later model 3500HD, the GMT400 bodied ones, have a similar but more modern driveline. They have 4 wheel disc brakes, and they had 4l80e transmissions. IIRC, depending on the Year model, ( they made them from around '92-02, again, IIRC..) Had either a Gen V, or Gen 6 454, or a 6.5 Turbo Diesel. I have also seen them with an 8.1. I've seen complete trucks for sale pretty dang cheap, and it'd modernize the driveline a LOT. Also, they use the same wheel lug pattern, and ALL came with readily available 19.5" tires, AND Alcoa makes wheels to fit that pattern. Similar era GM motorhome chassis had many of the same parts. Kool project Dave!

If I was you I would get a rollback bed, They would just bolt on as well and you have the PTO already. I see them all the time on marketplace, for really great prices too. I’d venture to say they are a lot more common to find used and a ton less work than building a ramp bed. Not to mention they are much handier.

They don’t *look too* modern there were roll backs around way before that truck was new. In fact Holmes came out with the tilt bed in 1916. A truck like that is not just going to be a showpiece it’s also going to be used as a tool and I don’t know about you but I want the most functional tool possible. If you do much with moving around old cars a roll back is a game changer.

One thing I love about old iron is how you can get excited about very basic stuff like, it has a floor, or it is somewhat complete, or all of the glass is in it etc etc even if it looks like crap and the wiring is a mess or whatever 🤣

Seeing that C50 brought back some old memories I forgot about! I’m 67 now but when I was 19 I worked for a lumberyard I think it was a 1970 C50 orange cab and orange interior with a 350. It had the PTO and split rear end with a 16’ flat bed to dump building materials for construction contractors. It was fun to drive!

It has 5885 miles on it. It has a 366 big block. I pulled it out. I’m gonna replace it with a 5.9 Cummins 12 valve and an NV4500. Change the rear axle to a 4.33. Change the front axle. Both axles have disc brakes. 10 lug bolt pattern. I’m adding AC, power brakes and power steering. Keep up the vision! Great project!

I would be interested to see the rear differential, I would imagine it has a 2 speed rear. I worked on a fleet of C50 to 6500, Gm had their own version 2 speed a T150 and a T170, later on they switched to Eaton differentials. I had to laugh, lets see if it will do a burnout, those old gearbox's, drivelines and rear axles aren't real forgiving to clutch drops. But that just opens a door for some other kind of swap, have fun with the new project.

My uncle had a 66 with the straight six in it. We used it to haul concrete panel forms from job site to job site, each panel weighs 80 LBs, so that adds up quickly. Any way i was driving it fully loaded to the next job sight, with my cousin following behind me in a pickup truck. We had a valley to drop in to and then climb out of, and the other side was step and long. I floored it going down the hill to get as much speed as i could to get up the other side, but I still ended up in granny gear to finish the climb up the other side. shortly before cresting the hill the old truck burped a big one, it felt like the whole truck jumped of the ground. but it was still ruining so I pressed on. I did notices it seemed a bit loader. when we got to the job site, my cousin asked if the truck was still running ok, I said yes and mention the back fire. he said there was a fire ball that shot out the back about ten feet. we got down on the ground a looked under the truck and found that the muffler looked more like a ballon. I had a lot of fun driving those old trucks. they were tuff old rigs. Your is a nice score, cant wait to see the end result.

Keep the stock frame and get Dave Chapelle back over to help fab up an airbag suspension! 3 or 4-link rear, maybe radius arms up front; would give you both BIG style points and comfort(livability) upgrade. And would be able to get it that little bit closer to the ground for loading up low ground clearance cars. Maybe GM Performance Parts will sponsor a ZZ632 & Allison 10L1000 for the ultimate hot rod car hauler? LOL

Used cab and chassis can be had cheap. Putting that cab and engine of choice on one wouldn’t be hard

Sweet truck man I have one of my own that still has a dump bed on it. If you want to solve your wheel problem dirty and cheap (I'd say quick but I would be lying) axle swap is the way to go. I am swapping axles from a 82 C70 into mine and its pretty simple the most complicated part( for me since I have a long dump bed full of crap) is getting it in the air but yours should be easy and pretty much any newer medium duty truck axles will bolt up and give you wheel options, newer dual circuit brakes, and you can get better road gears with a rear end you can find gears for only thing I had to watch out for was front spring width since mine are smaller they are skinnier so I have to put some plate in to space it out for the ubolts.
