A Blown Ramp Truck Road Trip to Get a 350 SBC-Swapped Mini Truck! Finnegan's Garage Ep.115

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This marks the final installment of our 1969 Chevy C50 ramp truck project. If you recall, this is the truck that we traded Big Red and a wad of cash for. We've put a lot of work into this ride including a complete wiring job, new front suspension, new brakes, a restored engine compartment and most importantly, a new Weiand 6-71 supercharger and dual Holley Double Pumper carbs. Now, we make her even more street friendly with the addition of a fresh 14-bolt rear axle from the dudes at Quick Performance. This axle has all he goodies for freeway flying and maximum wheelspeed burnouts; it's stuffed with a Yukon Grizzly locker, 35 spline axles, new seals and bearings throughout, and a 3.55:1 ring and pinion gearset.
We swapped axles right before making an 800 mile trip to Florida to pick up a pile of parts and a Toyota Mini-Truck from our friend Steve Shaw. This truck will become Newbern's next project, which I'm sure you'll see on this channel at some point. Thanks for watching. If you'd like some Finnegan Speed AND MARINE MERCH, go here:

The numbers you people are referring to are the number of rotations of the pinion gear. Hence 4.11 gives you four point one one rotations of the gear per 1 rotation of the rear wheels. Higher number is more rotations but limits top speed. Also keeps engine rpm higher causing the engine to work harder. Lower ratios 3.55, 3.33 give a lower rotation speed under acceleration but greatly improve top speed and fuel milage. Less rpm at the same mile per hour obviously will result in better fuel milage. Like my buddy's Trans Am we swapped the 3.73s for 4.11s. Gave it way more acceleration and low end torque but it was screaming topped out 115, it had nothing more. So we swapped to 3.55s. Ration was to low no low end torque just a turd. So we tried 3.90s and that was the magic number, 60s in less than 6 seconds and gets up to about 140ish. Like the difference between a big tire car and a small tire car. Higher number i.e. big tires =more acceleration Lower number i.e. small tires = top speed. You're welcome. 😒

I'm confused on that axle. It's got 30 spline axles? So weaker than stock? You can find 14b's with 3.55's, 1.5" 35 spline full floating axles that are factory locked in the junkyard anywhere. Hmmm... the axle you took out was a newer and stronger casting too.

881 comments and, I did not go through all of them to find out if I am the first to mention that; You have a pack of overload spring leafs BUT, no stops for them. Just the funky U-bolts down to the main pack. Next to useless. The easiest way to change a rear axle is; jack the chassis way up and, roll it out on the wheels. Roll the new one in the same. It saves trying to muscle it up on the floor jack. The P-30 had notoriously bad ball joints. It was a "1 ton" chassis that was eventually rated up to 14,500 GVW.
