The muniment room absolutely should be climate-controlled in order to save the archives. It's possible you could find someone at a university working on an advanced degree in archival studies who would take on an advisory role to help out without costing too much. It scares me to think about the damage even a small controlled fire in the fireplace could cause.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments above insuring the documents, books, & photos need to be archived properly --- temperature, humidity etc. I couldn't believe you were talking about decor, paint colour & using a fireplace around your precious treasures. If you are not able to afford a real archivist, perhaps you could find a uni, public school etc & donate all this to protect it. Just me, but I was more curious about the, perhaps, piss pot. Thx

🙄 And the tapestries should be repaired and the paintings should be cleaned and the stone should be repointed and the pipes should be replaced and the fireplaces should have HEPA filters and everyone should get cotton candy and live in a safety bubble. Seriously, of all the things in an old manor house, random family documents are some of the least precious and least important items there are nowadays. Get an auto feed scanner and call it a day. Frankly, just digitizing the docs quickly without your overfussy archival commandments would yield the most benefits to making the docs accessible to any interested scholars and to the family indefinitely.

Fireplace near any archives is foolish!
Duplicating the mask, for purchase in your gift shop, might be a good idea. I could imagine that it would be a quirky, fun item for someone to take home as a momento of their visit to Mapperton. I'd buy one.

Brilliant..
I am glad to hear you are renovating the muniment room. As a former archivist, I can tell you it is important to keep archival materials in specific conditions in order to preserve them. Many people think you can just store them any way, but that can lead to items deteriorating if they are not taken care of properly. You need to maintain a specific humidity level and should avoid using the fireplace because you have old items that could catch fire. Temperature fluctuations can be a detriment too. Consult an archivist about your space, but generally temperatures for paper records should be between about 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity should be about 40-55% and items should be handled with gloves to keep oil from your skin off them. I look forward to seeing how the room turns out.
@didntlistendad
Жыл бұрын
Interesting details. I note the recommendation for using gloves. Does that apply to paper & books too? I would have bought so- given skin oils and bacteria etc. Bit I have seen people insisting wearing gloves is too dangerous as you lose sensitivity and can more easily tear pages etc.
Barnstorming is from the midwest julie, where planes flew thru barns as entertainment.
I remember watching the Earl Spencer showing their muniment room on some documentary. It had been moved to the stone and concrete cellar because it is fireproof. It was climate controlled. I think you should do that and turn the current room into Julie's office where she can finally get warm sitting in front of the fireplace while researching her thesis.

"Business," yes. "Community," yes. Your role in the Mapperton community reminds me of the royal family's function for the nation and the Commonwealth. Hard work to be good stewards, and a living heart by which the community is unified and edified.
Love Julie's jubilant enthusiasm for history!
Julie, Luke, thank you so much for sharing this video today. I remember seeing Julie for the very first time cycling around London, perhaps in Ladies of London. She stood out then as being the most authentic and genuine, caring about Mapperton. And now today, as I watch this, I have to say well done Julie and Luke. What a journey, building two channels, restoring Mapperton, your Father-in-law sharing stories about the house, mother-in-law talking about the gardens, you and Luke having all these restoration projects going on. I look forward to these, especially during Covid, they got me through the isolation. Thank you so much. Perhaps someday I shall have the chance to visit in person. Till then, will wait for your next video.

I’d ask the family members who grew up at the original house if they recognize the gilded mask…it is creepily memorable and I sure they can recall if they saw it before.
As someone who has worked a bit on digital archiving and preservation of hundreds of years old manuscripts, I really hope that all of that family material gets digitized if it isn't already. I imagine you're on top of that. I've just inherited my own giant, jumbled cache of old family photos and letters, and haven't had the time to organize it yet, but my goal is to get it all scanned and online for family to access when they want.

Julie, many thanks to both you and Luke for providing me with so many hours of information, love of history, and a delight in life. Your efforts hit the spot!!!
I so agree with others who indicated the importance of hiring an archival/conservator consultant for this project. The records of the estate and family deserve proper attention. The esthetics of the room should be secondary to creating an appropriate environment for paper.
I do remember Julie taking us into the muniment room and telling us what it was. It may have been over on one of the other channels. How exciting to find Hinchingbrooke items!

Your children & future generations are so very blessed to have you both & Luke’s parents’ & everyone who is helping to maintain the Mapperton heritage & to recover the artifacts. Amazing!!❤ LOVE YOU ALL!!
What a fun episode! I love the seeing more "drone" views of the house that we really didn't see as much of in previous episodes. These really show how big and beautiful the area is! Luke, I am very curious if you father might remember seeing either of the pieces Julie just bought in the house when he was growing up or were they sold off long ago?
Excited to see what you do with the muniment room. Not sure a fireplace would be a good thing. Not only because of the paper, but also the soot. Definitely find out about the water damage. Even if it has been fixed, a dehumidifier might be something to include in the renovation. Humidity and mold are incredibly damaging to archives. Storing individual items in acid-free paper is very important to preserve the old paper. No glass doors on the bookcases. My sister is a librarian and says the books need to breathe. She had all the doors removed on the built-in bookcases when remodeling her house.

If the glass fronted bookcase were kept, it could house an assortment if non paper treasures.
Bookcase is sagegreen or «copenhagen green» I love it!
It appears that the wooden mask would look nice right above your heads in the kitchen - over the stove 😊
You're such a fun couple. It is such fun watching your videos.
Muniment is a document or record worthy of being archived. I like that word. Thanks for teaching me, Luke and Julie.
Loved the finds! Just a suggestion..take the paint off, sand and then STAIN the wood on the bookcases.. Much warmer and rich look. Just my opinion. Great video! 🌸🌿💕
I get so happy when you get so excited with the history, houses and furnishing. I find myself smiling like I’m there. I envy you your studies & masters persuit. How fun & interesting.
Congrats on getting a piece of the family history back 🎉🎉🎉Looking forward to seeing what Malcolm comes up with. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Seems to me that Julie was right with her pronunciation if only because the figures on the pot were from the Commedia dell'Arte. Pulcinella or Pierrot and Harlequin, and possibly Il Capitano? Scarecrow huh! If it doesn't find a home at Mapperton it would look great in your Italian house. The numbering makes me suspect it comes from an 'art pottery' somewhere. Worth a couple of hundred quid, and maybe (a lot) more if you could work out the maker. Nice pot anyway. The lion's head is great too.
How fun! Edit: so smart to be looking for the old items to bring back. :)
Its wonderful to find lost family items and I hope you find the other of the pair. I will keep my eyes out for it, but I think I could stare at the jardiniere half the day.
Mapperton is your family, your love for the manor and the history
Wow I love the History of Maperton. This is the first time exploring this wonderful experience and looking forward to catching up with everything. 🤗
OK - as to the Muniments room? Your family archives are about the most 'important' thing in the house. Move them to somewhere safe and dry - the Rothschild's rebuilt a whole farm complex to house their's at Waddesdon. Fires and archives tend not to mix, one log rolling out and they're all gone. And it is a lovely fireplace. Given this (smallish) room's location between the Dining Room and the Chapel, perhaps it would be better for displaying china, or church vestments and other religious stuff if you have it (I noticed the Crucifix). Just a thought.
I love Saturdays, when you have new posts! Always teaching and always learning. Your bargains from your ancestral home are a great find and I’m looking forward to seeing we’re they will end up. Also, love before and after projects, so it will be fun to watch the progress of your document room..Keep us posted because we are interested,
Imagine marrying into such a history rich family! I’d lose my mind at every turn. Exploring every inch of Mapperton!
I find this Monument room fascinating and I really look forward to seeing the renovations on this room! I don't think I could get ever get tired of all the archives and history this room stores. Munniments 🙂

Maintain all the records in their original form if possible, but I strongly suggest you have these records electronically scanned to save them from the degrades of time.

If the fabric of the curtains are still solid you could save yourselves a lot of money by adding a central band with matching bottom addition. I would suggest a wide stipe or plad to provide some contrast, fullness and the proper length.

How wonderful Julie that this piece from the original family castle!!
I’m always interested in the history, my mums ancestors were Montagu s from Rouen France ❤️
I think the mask would look nice on the wall over Paula’s right shoulder.
The kitchen mantel, there is a spot..it would beam on all the inhabitants
Looks like a seafoam green on the bookshelf
Place the gilded-masque above the point of the stone arch over the kitchen stove make make the kitchen sunnier! A protector of the sacred sandwiches!
Please work with a museum or national library to make sure you preserve all the documents in the Archive. Damp and smoke could ruin them.
this was an exciting segment, thank you for posting :)

There may be true history just in the paint alone. In Victorian days, an arsenic/copper oxide based paint was really popular until they realized it was a bit deadly. It was a 'special' kind of green and you tend to never forget it.
Luke! You may have grown up in the midst of archives, but they are important! They can degrade so quickly, and then the history is GONE! The direct and tangible history is gone, and all you have is varying generations of memory, which gets more and more faulty as time goes by.... Also, in the US, barnstorming (originally) was the process of flying in airplanes over barns, which impressed the farmers and scared the cows to death...... In the UK, what is the etymology of barnstorming (meaning thinking up great ideas)?
The gilt mask is wonderful! I have a mask collection from all over the world & now want one to have representing England.

Love your channel watching from south Africa and the lovely countess Caroline I adore always exciting seeing her those Georgian dresses is amazing
Concerning the gilt wall mask. Since you have one of a possible pair.......have you considered having a small shelf made to fit the flat surface? That would allow you a surface to display a small light weight object, like a photo or figurine. If you are lucky to find the mate it would be easy to part with the modern addition. Being able to use it as a display stand would make it easier to use anywhere in the house.
I don’t know much about preserving historical documents but I would have thought a working fireplace would be a big no no
Should make a mold of the carving and make a plaster cast with it, would be fun to have until you find the original!
Just discovered your channel and have been binge watching 😊 As an American fan, probably some 20 years older than you are, I kindly suggest you take a breath and slow down just a bit. I rushed through so much during my doctoral program, trying to balance family, work, studies, and my relationship that I often lost perspective and patience with the humans I loved most. My driveness did drive some of them away... I was much saddened by that outcome over time. Sometimes, achieving goals is very cold comfort in the long run. The BEST to you
Love it! You two are so lovely in this! Kudos!
I love this video being filmed in the dining room, the colors and decoration in there. I love the kitchen, but its just interesting to see a video being filmed in a different room. :-) Excited about the finding of valuable historical items to enhance Mapperton. It adds to the richness of the history and story. I really love the wood on that sideboard behind Julie. The swirly different color tones and woodgrain. Beautiful. I think the color of that bookcase in the archive room I would call Mountain Dew Green. lol. What fun. Excited about updating and repurposing the archive room and fixing that water damage. Do you need curtains in that room? Blinds or shutters might be more useful if you need anything. I would expect that light would be a maximum benefit to see but still protect the items in the room. A couple Sleepy Hollow leather armchairs (with wheels?) would be swanky in there, have a library vibe. And that word, monument or whatever, makes me hear that crazy song from Sesame Street, manamana, doo doo doo doo doo, manamana, doo doo doo doo....sorry. It just does. I will stick to the Archive Room. Manamana na nanana.

My very first thought as this video began in the dining room: "What an absolutely GORGEOUS room!" Tapestry, woodwork, table, chairs, sideboard, china cabinet/china, fireplace, sconces, art... there is not an inch that I was not swooning over and so it continues throughout the house. I have revised my ideas on what my dream job would be. One has always been to be a gardener on one of these beautiful estates. I have added another - the job of tracking down items from Hinchingbrooke House. In my next life I will move to the UK and do something like this. 😊 And I will always hold out hopes that one day Julie and Luke will pull off the ultimate acquisition - Hinchingbrooke House itself! 🪄 🏰!!

If it ends up that the companion mask is never recovered, one would think that it would be very easy to make a mold and use it to cast a plaster mask and either spray paint it gold or gold leaf it.
Very cool items to bring home!
Brainstorming is collaberating of ideas. Barnstorming was an activity in the early days of aviation involving going from place to place and having an airshow and airplane rides....
Would love to play Scrabble there...with you both!!
Love! And Julie, love your shorter hair! Completely, utterly suits you!
Great episode and I concur with above comments that more Paula would be great!
When she said it was probably from a pair with possibly a shelf above I immediately saw it as top corner of a mantle and the shelf over it. Check that out in the photos you might have Julie.
Julie, we toured Old Williamsburg, Virginia in 1970. The green on those bookcases reminded me of a color that was prominent in many of the rooms and painted pieces. Ironically the green color was called Williamsburg Blue. Before you paint over the cases, please research the paint and possible significance of the color. There's probably nothing there and it was probably called Dead Molted Green Woodpecker. Even so it would be a shame to obliterate a link to a choice made by Alberta. If you find out the color was Dead Molted Thrush, we can all have a good laugh! Blessings from Kansas.
