We fixed the only issue with the Moccamaster...

Ойын-сауық

Well, here we go inventing things. Basically, we have always had an issue with the shower head design on the MM - it has always still driven us to agitate our brew throughout - and I think we have done a great job in fixing that.
Again, this is a prototype - and it'll be stainless steel at the end of the day, but we wanted to get something out so that enthusiasts and nerds alike could provide us with some functional feedback.

This is an exciting and long overdue modification. Many of us Moccamaster users appreciate your time and effort. I have a few questions: 1) Is the prototype material safe especially after near boiling water passes throught it? 2) Have you tested the water temp exiting the stainless steel version of your new showerhead? 3) Does the increased weight of the stainless steel affect the seal and stability of the showerhead at the joint where it attaches? 4) Have you considered a redesigned basket lid that fits over the new showerhead for aesthetic and heat retention concerns? Many thanks!

I'm sure that the steel version will be heavier, especially at the shower head end. If it end up being too heavy and causing imbalance and losing seal around the tube, possibly a simple cross shape will help to increase basket coverage while decreasing mass and weight of a conventional round head. Flow can probably be evened out with variable hole sizing to promote water distribution to other areas.

I think a fully transparent plastic (perhaps the same plastic as the water resevoir) would be cool - it’d match the aesthetic, and you could see the water move through it the same way it bubbles up through the centre of the reservoir when it boils.

it wouldn't hold up overtime when calcium deposits build up. Being a visible part it might actuall detract at a certain point. This would be more easily remedied by extending the glass pipe that is fed by the heater towards the rubber gasket that holds the showerhead in place. This however is too brittle a material at such a critical point in the machine. What must also be considered is that this showerhead won't dry easily and could be a point for bacteria to accumilate if the machine is not properly taken care of. That said, i'd love a fully transparent machine for similar reasons.

Excellent work. Elegant design. Stainless steel indeed but I’d have the outside of the arm be coated in black to balance out the color of the entire machine. I've played with making a showerhead for one, but just curiosity. Have you considered (or have a design) for a "blank" that one can drill their own holes into to experiment with hole sizes? Also with the MM I feel like the brew bed itself ends up shaped a little differently than a cone or flat brewer would be, and think it might be worth playing with an oval shaped shower head or rectangular one or a hole pattern that does

You can put me down for two, one in CO and one in AZ, as soon as you have them in stainless (or chrome plate). Another thing one buys when spending $300 on a coffee maker is the aesthetic of the industrial design. The less one is asked to compromise on that aesthetic, the more likely one will be to purchase your improved distributor design. Nice work.

It was surprising to make my first pot of coffee in the new moccamaster and realize how poorly water was dispersed from the brew arm. I had just ordered a replacement arm to tinker with when it occurred to me I couldn't be the only one with the same concern and landed here. While I think there are a couple of simple tweaks to be made (1. Longer arm than shown for sure. It's one of the short comings of the OEM. 2. The screw off spray/dispersion face mentioned would allow optional patterns / hole size and easy cleaning.) I just ordered a prototype to support the cause. A quick update....No word on the prototype shipping yet, but the OEM replacement arm arrived. I used an ice pick to tweak the alignment of the spray holes and was able to improve the dispersion a bit, particularly in shooting further across the basket, less so laterally, which makes sense given the direction of flow. I'm sure the replacement arm will be an improvement over this, but it's simple tweak I would recommend to anyone for marginal gains. Cheers.

Can you share with us whether or not the container that holds the water, can it be turned 180 degrees? In other words, to make it where the fill lines are on the opposite side they are on now. Reason is, we wish that the switches were on the other side too. It would work much better for us. They don't make that, but maybe we could flip the container around. i Also, it seems that we could cut a lot of the power cord off easily enough, by opening the bottom of the machine. Customer service seems to be in denial about the need for improvement. I have been using the CoffeePilot spray head that sits on top of the coffee filter basket. I have the Select version, and brewing 6 tablespoons of beans with the water level on the machine set to half a carafe, which slows the brewing down, with the spray head in place, I keep the carafe out for 40 seconds to allow the water to build up in the grinds and the basket, and then put the carafe back in place to allowed it to drain normally. WOW! I am about to send my Moccamaster back for the very reason the brew arm does not fully "shower" the grounds - a huge flaw that my Cuisinart with its "showerhead" brew head (integrated in the lid) wets the grounds completely - making a great cup of coffee compared to the terribly weak (IMO) result from the M'master. You guys have come up with THE solution - and adding about 1/2" to the new stainless version will put the shower head smack dab in the middle of the brew basket. HOWEVER, a concern might be that the longer and heavier stainless arm (the printed plastic one is probably lighter than the stock arm) will SAG, so it may need a tab on the bottom that will allow it to rest on the edge of the water container to prevent sagging. THOUGHTS? Thanks for the great idea! - LongJnSilver in "Historic Hendersonville" NC

You may want to take a look at Coffee Pilots Shower Head for the One Cup. It fits over the brew basket and does not require removing the arm. I am more comfortable with that design as it won’t add increased weight to the arm since it is completely supported by the brew basket. I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I just feel more comfortable with a design that doesn’t alter my MM.

That’s interesting. Good to know. We considered something like this during design, but did not want to prevent access to agitation or contribute any more to heat transfer. Our goal is to have this around 20 bucks when all is said and done. The prototype cost is high since it’s just a little sprint run for us…

I’ll be posting an update video on Tuesday with our new brew recipe - printing has officially began - we will be shipping out 6 shower heads a week starting this coming Friday (they take 20 hours each to make) - and the price will remain the same until the stainless steel version is released this spring. Paypal is available as an option through our website I believe - shoot us an email if you have any trouble.

@@Coffeehaus Well, I just ordered the Select, from Amazon, which will be here in 2 days, they say. I guess I could order a prototype now and then order a stainless steel one later. I understand the stainless steel ones will be about a half inch longer to be centered over the filter?

@@Coffeehaus Oh, that's good. How long should the prototypes last, or should they be indestructible (and non-toxic I assume)? According to an article on the subject I came upon a few hours ago, there has to be balance or trade-off between water dispensing that agitates and sprays evenly, which may cause less agitation. I guess ideally it should have a little agitation with even coverage, enough to keep the particles suspended in the water. I wonder why no one has designed a spray head that has a turbine mechanism so the water flow would cause it to rotate in addition to spraying, or maybe it would be too likely to get stuck. Maybe the water pressure isn't sufficient. So you just put a little motor with a button battery in it. That's a joke.

@@Coffeehaus I sent you an email a few days ago using the e-mail you give for feedback (not using my KZread channel email), asking about PayPal which I can't find on your website, but I have not received a reply from you. I've been experimenting with my moccamaster for a few days. At first I thought the problem before was the beans and then maybe the grinder, so tried a few different somewhat expensive grinders, but the problem turned out to be my several-year-old coffee maker although not obvious from the way it operated, that is, the water seemed very hot, but it was not making good coffee. The brewing time did seem to slow down, which usually means the temperature is not hot enough but I think the temperature was still hot, so maybe it was over extracting. Anyway after some experimentation with the Moccmaster I got some very good brews with my original grinder and coffee. I even tried at first to make a tube of four layers of aluminum foil with crude holes approximating those in the original spray arm, and fit and shape it over the original arm extending the new holes over the center, but I couldn't put the lid on. So I'm not sure how good that would be--there was less pulsing and more streaming. I think I tried it twice but didn't pursue it further--one thing I like about the MM is that it uses a copper heating element instead of aluminum. So far the best thing I found is to push the grinds in the filter away from the handle side of the basket, so the majority are under the area of the spray head holes, and shape it into a sort of plateau there. It does seem to get the grinds wet better but doesn't solve the problem of the rectangular channel, although the coffee does taste pretty good that way. I'm also experimenting with pushing the grinds on the ends of the channel into the center halfway through the brewing. Although it may be expensive, I think someone could design a machine with a spray head with a single spout that rotates like a pour over. I guess the water pressure isn't great enough to make it rotate on the same principle as a garden sprinkler. So if you don't have PayPal, do you have a phone number I can give you my card number over the phone--I just don't like putting it online? Is there a different email I should used to contact you?

I think the shower arm you are showing should be a little longer so that it evenly reaches across to the other side. It only appears to be dispersing water in a wider area from side to side than the Moccamaster's shower head, but doesn't quite reach across so that the shower drips just as close to the front of the basket as it does to that back of the basket.
