This Batman is as dark, depressed and angry as many of those living in these dark, stressful times. Batman wants revenge, while the villain wants to expose government corruption. Thus, the normal superhero story formula is upended. Looking forward to the sequel in 2025

Riddler, of course, also wants revenge. But on a much wider, more deranged scale. This is what ties him to Batman, and causes Batman to rethink and regret his path of vengeance. It's such a powerful arc for Bruce. At the outset, he's in an almost aimless suicide mission as Batman, consumed by his rage...by the end, he's learned valuable lessons, and become a genuine hero.

He doesn't know Bruce is Batman. When he meant "the real you" he was referring to Batman being somebody like himself who hates the elites and corrupt and will do anything to get rid of them. But once he learned that Batman was more about justice and doing what's right, rather than revenge, he turns on him. You can tell by the way he talks about Bruce Wayne when he's talking to Batman.

When the Riddler goes on to talking about about Bruce, the context is different in that Riddler is refering to Bruce as somebody else and isn't the one he's talking to. This was a good look at before he created the persona “Bruce Wayne.” And he makes the switch from vengeance to justice. Great movie can’t wait for the next one.

32:30 The Cling Wrap is to prevent stray hairs from falling out, thus denying the police forensic evidence of who the perp was. Same principle as wearing gloves or taping heavy-duty trashbags over your shoes. 34:22 This whole sequence is probably the best visual representation of the duality of Batman...he's simultaneously the glimmer of hope in the darkness for the innocents trying to live in Gotham, and the monster in the shadows for the criminals. This is Year 2 Batman, where he's still full of rage and learning the ropes. He hasn't had the realization yet that just being feared as "vengeance" isn't enough, until the end of the movie that is, when he finally realizes what he needs to become to really have the intended impact on the city. That's also why we don't see much of him as Bruce Wayne throughout the movie: he hasn't developed that public persona yet, because he's been so obsessed with becoming the Batman. Matt Reeves knocked it out of the park with this movie, and I'm incredibly excited to see what he does with the sequel...I just hope it won't involve the Joker, as there are just too many good Batman villains that haven't been properly explored on the big screen to retread the Joker yet again (unless Matt combines the A Death In The Family and The Killing Joke storylines...then bring on the Joker)...give me a live-action Scarecrow, Firefly, Azrael, Victor Zsasz, Hugo Strange, the Court of Owls, Deathstroke, any of those done in a quasi-horror fashion like this Riddler was done would be freaking amazing!

The movie is a true detective story that we really haven’t seen in any of the previous batman movies. And for me Batman’s detective side is one of the most important parts of his character and they portrayed that perfectly here. The riddler was a great villain always being one step ahead of batman. The interrogation scene is one of my favorites because it shows how crazy the riddler is. This movie is a clear masterpiece that imo is 10x better than the dark knight and other batman movies

So don’t know if you guys picked up on it, but throughout the movie they kept mentioning and even showing that this is YEAR 2 Bruce aka Vengeance..which is why he said in the beginning that he’s “VENGEANCE”. He’s still unhinged and still inexperienced. He’s still figuring things out and quite reckless. He doesn’t care much about his image as BRUCE WAYNE and he only is active at night fighting crime. Which is why he had to grow throughout the movie and realized a lot of things. Thus him slowly making his two identities BRUCE WAYNE and BATMAN. That will set up everything in the next movie and I’m sure everything from his weapons, Batmobile, and suit will be upgraded. Of course there will be conflicts as well as another development of his character and hero. The director is MATT REEVES and his intention about Gotham and the movie is very noir, gloomy, detective, with a bit of horror, and psychological aspects too.

When you listen to them; it doesn’t feel like dialogue, it feels natural! Like all these people exist and think and project their feelings in a completely natural way. Scenes that you previously saw, and thought that they were just padding for the movie, becomes nuanced and deep and important. I thought Robert Pattinson did fantastic as Batman (up there with Keaton and Bale imo), and I like that his Batman voice isn’t too over the top (wasn’t a fan of that with Bale’s, but he still killed it as Batman/Bruce Wayne). People worry about what his Bruce Wayne would be like, but we’ll get to see the Bruce Wayne we know in the sequels as Matt Reeves wanted to develop these characters. But hey. To each their own.

100% agree. The Dark Knight is a great Nolan film but it striped away alot of the visual tone and style of Gotham and Batman that it loses alot of the personality of Batman and Gotham. While Batman Begins has all of these elements alongside Nolan's directing and writers feeling much closer to a Batman film. Batman Returns is the same people say it's a great Tim Burton film but Batman 89 is a better Batman film. As Burtons style suits Batman and Gotham much more than Nolan people have no problem with that but just the strangeness and over the top creepy nature of the film not to mention the focus on the side characters who are much more strange and wacky is where the Burton feel comes from.

Pattinson actually did a really good job at portraying this stage of Batman. This storyline skips the origin we've seen over and over, and gives us a young Batman thats just into his second year of being Batman. Hes still broken, still trying to figure out what the mantle of Batman means to him, and he doesnt see his public face as Bruce Wayne as being valuable at all. Its why we see a fantastic Batman, and a blah Bruce Wayne. If they end up making sequels in this storyline, we'll start to see him play up his playboy billionaire side. But right now, hes just consumed by anger and grief.

Watched this masterpiece in the cinemas.. I will never forget the experience. I think that is the realist batman we ever got.. I remember someone say: "If batman was real he would be insane" which is absolutely true.. The stress and all for a human being. Remember that this batman is very young.. There is no Bruce in this movie.. It's just batman.. He has to learn how to be that charismatic rich guy.

I'm so happy you guys are finally checking this one out. Here's something interesting that I noticed about this movie. I could absolutely be wrong about this, but I am PRETTY SURE that Batman didn't break a single law during the first fight scene on the elevated railway platform. From the moment you hear his first footstep, all the way to "Please don't hurt me!" He doesn't commit a single crime, and this would absolutely hold up in court. It's October 31st. Batman says it in the voice-over, we see the Mayor's son take off for trick-or-treating, everybody's wearing costumes, there's a bunch of dudes wearing clown make up, and they stood there and watched. A guy in another costume loudly announces his presence, but doesn't say a word. He didn't make any threats, he didn't run anybody down, he didn't hide and start taking them out one-by-one without being seen, nobody got stabbed by a sudden batarang. The gang leader verbally confirms, "What the hell are you supposed to be?" which is something you say to somebody wearing a Halloween costume you might not recognize. The gang leader clearly doesn't recognize him as BATMAN, but assumes that it's some random guy in a Halloween costume. He pulls out the machete.... there's no response. As soon as he raises it over his head, it's self-defense, and Batman immediately hands him his own ass. Batman didn't assault this guy, but if he complained about that, he'd be admitting an intent to straight up murder a guy. He says, "I'm vengeance." and everybody else goes, "Oh, shit. That's HIM." They didn't say, "Let's get the fuck out of here before he kills us." They immediately surround him and respond with physical violence. Then, that guy pulls out a gun - which scares the "half-face" kid and his screaming catches Batman's attention and he turned around just in time to get shot in the shoulder at point blank range. The second shot grazes another gangster. Without any hesitation, Batman grabs the gun hand, points it in the air, activates a taser in his glove, and VERY CAREFULLY shocks the guy's vertebrae which causes his hand to convulse and involuntarily discharge the other five rounds into the ceiling, harmlessly. That's when everybody realizes that he isn't stopping anybody from running away. Even if all fifteen of them swore in court that he came out of nowhere and just started beating the fuck out of everybody... the guy's wearing a BODYCAM. He could send the actual footage of the encounter to the police ANONYMOUSLY and never have to even worry about the slander. No crime was committed.

Did you guys catch the part in the Riddler's monologue in Arkham after his speech about Bruce Wayne being an orphan when he says "he's the only one we didn't get"? Some people miss that part but it means Riddler doesnt know Batman is Bruce Wayne. He thought they were working together so he wouldnt want to kill Batman when he tried to kill Bruce Wayne and he also wouldnt "work" with Batman if he knew he was Bruce. If you listen to his speech about Bruce again when knowing this it changes how you look at the way hes talking. He thinks Batman thinks the same way he does about Bruce Wayne and hes basically saying "of course the orphan who never had to actually struggle like me is the one who survived right?"

Fun bit of trivia--the actor playing the Mayor played a vampire in the series THE STRAIN. And I really appreciate how consistent and nuanced all the characters are. For example, Selina is excellent at making quick decisions--but I don't think she's ever killed someone before, hence she missed when pulling the trigger for the first time (pushing that guy off the building was a way of distracting Batman and Gordon, since she knew they would save him). And yeah, Selina Kyle is Catwoman's real name. Just as Penguin's real name is Oswald, hence in this version he prefers to be called "Oz." Well, wouldn't you? And yes, Batman always has a thing for Catwoman. I for one am baffled by your comments on the acting. It sounds, frankly, as if you are complaining because they played the roles in ways that weren't what you expected. Not what they actually did.

This movie did the best portrayal of the Batman as "the world's greatest detective", which is really how Batman started out; DC meant "Detective Comics", which is why he never had superpowers, per se. Just really smart, having great tech from his wealth (another common theme from all the old comics), and expert at reading villains, even when they aren't so obsessed with impressing him that they leave clues for him. Going from three steps behind to three steps ahead is the true Batman story. In this, his early course of "vengeance", leaning heavily on using fear against those living in that darkness, but learning that he was leading too much by that example, to realizing that he could much more good leading by hope. He would still be there in the dark, scaring bad guys, but now also giving hope to people that he was also there in the dark to save the day. And that helping the good people was always what he was meant to do. Like Christian Bale's Dark Knight, he would do what the police and other good guys can't, while still leaving justice to the system (like when he was bringing in Falcone).

  • @The_Other_Dan

This is during his first couple of years as Batman while he's still angry and out for revenge. He also hasn't fully developed his separate 'Bruce Wayne Philanthropist" persona yet so his anger and animosity is still there so there's no real separation between the two except for the suit. It's also great how at the end he that pivotal moment where he realises being 'Vengeance' makes him no different than many of the criminals and if he really wants to make a difference he needs to be more than just out for revenge and punishment. I was so sceptical but in the end Pattinson turned out what may be my favourite Batman and definitely the best 'Worlds Greatest Detective' version of Batman the way they leaned heavily into the clues and investigation side.

I watched “The Batman” at the theater and I loved it😁🔥. The Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy is great and fantastic in its own way and no one will ever touch that masterpiece but this movie impressed me and I was amazed to see how good it was as it exceeded my expectations👍. I loved the feel to this film and the background it had which was dark, gloomy, rainy and serious, Gotham City was shown so differently compared to Dark Knight and it was so well done. Robert Pattison was great as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, Colin Farrell was unrecognizable and brilliant as The Penguin, John Turturo was really good as Falcone, Zoe Kravitz was amazing as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman and Paul Dano was fantastic as the antagonist “The Riddler”👏👏. I loved the car chase scene with Penguin and the action sequences. Loved your reaction/analysis, take care and have a good one❤️
