The moment of the killing blow was EPIC in the actual campaign. Travis knew 100% that the fall would drop Grog to zero HP, and used his Reckless Attack feature to roll with Advantage(roll twice, take the higher one). His two rolls were a natural 1 and a natural 20(critical hit, something Barbarians get an extra damage boost for).

Incidentally, all the stuff you were saying you wish the story did, it actually did in the critical role campaign. There was this whole game of thrones-ish subplot where Grog had to win favor with the herd. The Herd already had sort of split factions within itself, mainly a Goliath druid named Greenbeard who was sort of insidiously whispering into Kevdak's ear and coercing him into bowing to the dragon. And Grog had to convince Zanror to take up leadership and blah blah tl;Dr haha

  • @JotaDeHace

    @JotaDeHace

    10 ай бұрын

Yeah I was going to mention the same. Also when they were making plans to attack the dragon with the herd some Vox members were a little reluctant knowing how many herd members would undoubtedly die with their idea. Grog admonished them saying if they were having misgivings to remember that the herd was full of rapists and murderers and they really shouldn't feel bad about it.

I have had a blast watching you guys go through this. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for having fun. Morgan your reaction was exactly my reaction when I watched that scene live on twitch years ago. When Matt described shoving Grog down on the barricade spikes, I shouted "NO" so loud I scared my dog lol. You'll be glad to know that in the game, the cast was just as protective of Pike, There was one time when the other players stood up at the table and stood in front of Ashley while yelling at Matt because a bad guy was targeting Pike, it was both wholesome and hilarious. For Kenny the Editor: I once had a barbarian that jumped off of an airship onto an adult white dragon, damaged it's wing, then jumped back onto the crashing airship and road it to the ground by hanging onto the rigging. She lost a hand. It was awesome.

And then our party got captured by the villain, partly because my character could no longer properly wield his weapon lol And the villain saw my barbarian’s messed up hand and was like: “oh, let me help you with that” and then she chopped it off 😂 The DM was being merciful actually lol she very easily could have straight up killed him 😂

I totally agree about resurrection somewhat trivializing death. To combat that Mercer has an extra rule for all the resurrection spells so they require additional skill check rolls, which they don't require according to the official rules, there they are just instant successes. Even so, Critical Role have had A LOT of deaths and most of the time, that skill check have been passed. Not to an improbable level but it is approaching the statistically unlikely. Pike died prior to the stream starting, that why her hair is white, resurrected by a cleric in Emon or Westruun think. Grog actually died from Craven's Edge, revived by Pike. Vex died and Vax offering his soul was part of Kashaw's resurrection ritual. Those are just the ones you're up to. They have had permanent deaths, most of the time though, their resurrections have been successful.

I'm getting ready to start a new campaign where we start out at 5th level. My character is a tortle with 2 levels of barbarian and 3 levels of monk. His backstory is he was a nasty street kid who had anger issues, and then was rescued and healed by some monks who taught him how to channel it. (Way of Kensei monk). As we level up, depending on what's been happening, it might be barbarian or monk.

"We All Rage" may be my most replayed song as of late. And great for working out! 💪 I just started a campaign with my Moon Druid/Beast Barbarian. She is an 18 year old Shifter who was captured and forced to be a circus freak for her younger years. One night, the Wrangler began beating one of her only friends, and she snapped and killed the wrangler in front of the audience. And she has been on the run from herself ever since. Her rage is more involuntary, and if she shifts to her Beast form, she almost blacks out from the intensity. Every one of my characters encapsulates some aspect of me or my past. She is a dramatized version of me in high school when I was also abused and couldn't even pretend to say that I love myself. I'm waiting to see how her journey will allow me to process those feelings in a different way. But don't worry, I like myself now. Thanks Kenny for the ask, cuz I will go on and on 😅

For Kenny: My favorite Barb was a Bugbear Storm path. Ten foot reach and took sentinel. She escaped her island tribe from a political marriage trope to a merchant ship, so technically a runaway princess turned sailor. Her rage manifested in pure enjoyment and tended to chuckle through combat. (Yes, storm isnt optimal, it was a challenge and thematic choice. Nobody roast me for not going bear totem.)😉

Favorite animated episode! I always loved the Barbarians that Critical Role has and Grog is for me the best (Yasha is a close second). To me they always have such impactful storylines even if they aren't as overtly angsty as say a Rogue or Bard's would be. My First ever major D&D pc was a Polar Bear Beasthide Shifter Barbarian. They were designed to be as tanky as possible with massive HP.

This is the one I have been waiting to see you guys react to the most since you first started this series for one very particular reason: You MUST react to the "For Strongjaw!" moment from the original stream. The moment where Travis (Grog's actor) realizes he gets to do the killing blow against Kevdak is without a doubt one of the most heartwarming moments I've ever seen in any form of media. Never before or since has a human being been filled with more joy and victory. Kenny, I'm putting you to task to convince the gang to do this. Cue it up, maybe give 'em a little context since the moment's a little different from the final animated episode, and let's watch the watchers watch some D&D!

Heyo Kenny! You asked about Barbarians and I am Here to Deliver! My Barbarian is a Tiefling named Carrion. It is a name he chose to represent how he will find and kill the people who murdered his sister. Carrion was originally chaotic evil, but over the time he spent with his new friends (and finding out his sister is actually alive!) he slowly shifted to chaotic good. One time, in his early days, he burned down a whole village and joined a cult! My favourite part about Carrion tho: he is bright pink. But he insists that he’s actually light red. Yes, that’s a red vs blue reference lol Also his hand got chopped off at one point in the campaign (the DM was actually being merciful lol)

Kenny, to answer your question at 9:35: I've only played a barbarian once, for a very brief time in a campaign that lasted only a few sessions before dying out. I don't remember anything combat-wise that he did, but I *do* remember a wonderful roleplay moment. See, I usually play high-int casters, but the DM asked us to specifically make a character that's the opposite of our usuals, to get us out of our comfort zone. So my barb... was an idiot 😂 Low int, low wis. He was also from a desert tribe, so when someone mentioned hill giants, he had no idea what they were. Another party member decided to fuck with him by saying "they're giants as big as entire hills!" One low insight roll later, and he believed it. So the entire short campaign, he was terrified of ever meeting a hill giant, because he thought they were god-sized. In the last session we got to, we encountered hill giants. In the middle of combat, my barb goes, "You said they were as big as hills!" To which the other party member replied, "They are! These are just the babies!" I didn't even roll for it, I just let my guy believe it and embraced the hilarity 😂

Because Editor Boy Asked: Favorite barbarian I ever played wasnt much of a hitter for a long time, because my Magic/DEX-heavy party needed all the tanking abilities I couldn't give. The fact that the campaign got to Level 18-19 was largely due to all that early tanking, making the game super fun for the DPS characters. Eventually though, I could switch to more damage powerups and wow... As a guy who always wrote barb off in favor of more obviously “technical” characters, I Lea Ned there’s actually a lot of technical D&D required to be the best tank you can be. One of my funniest characters, just being in the trenches tasting blood in my mouth every combat sesh. Glorious. Hail Uthgar, the Battle Father!

Probably one of my favorite Barbarians I ever ran was my own Goliath Barbarian, who was my first D&D character ever. Named him Montanyuh "Monty" (he was made on the anniversary of Monty Oum's passing), and went with my best friend to an Adventurer's League thing at our game store. Got him up to Level 6, and he was notorious for taking trophies from his enemies, typically a skull. Well, we had one adventure where there were pretty much no skulls to claim, so he dragged a lid-less sarcophagus out of the Underdark so he'd have something cool as his trophy. We broke the lid during the fight with whatever was in it. Close second would have to be Grach, my hydrophobic Bugbear. He was deathly afraid of any water source bigger than a 2 gallon bucket.

In a weird indirect way, my own Barbarian is a homage to Travis's characters, especially Grog and Fjord (and his love for football). My Barb, Danny O'Rourke, The Dragon Rider, is a middleschool football player who transforms a la Power Rangers into this big ass Dragonborn masked warrior. Very big into wanting to becoming a hero, his journey is primarily about learning what it ACTUALLY MEANS to be a hero and the weight and responsibilities that come with that. After beating his abusive dad (who died ages back and was resurrected as a pawn for the big bads) and letting go of the anger he held for him, he was officially deemed worthy by this mecha made by the gods to become its next pilot. Now Dragon Rider is on his way to get the rest of his levels in Paladin instead, having become the hero he always dreamed to be.

22:05 Yeah I think some fans ignore just how many times characters are brought back in favour of getting an "Um, actaully - " in on reactors who see the show as it is, which has flaws in how those moments are adapted. In this case, yeah in the original Grog got stabbed on a post, but he wasnt pinned there pathetic and helpless while watching his friends in trouble. 25:20 Its not shown well but Vex is actually able to cast spells on her own, she uses the bow to focus the magic like Keyleth does her staff. In theory she could pick up Vax's daggers and use some spells through those, as long as its a ranged attack. The new thing the Vestige does is the vine arrows, while the fire arrows shes had from S1E1 (the lightning arrow is also one she should have had herself, looks like theyve put it into the vestige to make it look cooler. Makes Vex look much less cool, like a mundane archer with gadgets instead of a spellcasting ranger :( 26:10 Thats exactly what happened, they dragged out townspeople to watch the duel and used them as shields when fighting broke out, there were at least 3 dead and Pike actually resurrected a child. But no time for that on tv, too dark! Dont show the mayors familys heads on spikes or dead villagers littering the streets, no Vox is totally chummy with the herd now! Dont have the scene off to the side where the team makes clear they know these guys are just fodder for the acid dragon, and Grog reassures them he has zero love for his people and thinks they deserve it for what theyve done. Grog and Pike lived with Wilhand not way off in the forest but *in* Westruun, no way they'd forgive what was done here.

So so so good, and so obviously made by people who love this kind of shit. Sometimes it's okay for something to just be cool as shit. And yeah, the original game is good to look at for this part, too. It's Episode 52, "The Kill Box." Travis hits the most clutch nat 20 of all time, the cast absolutely loses their minds when he gets the HDYWDT, and Ashley Johnson has blue hair, which was frankly a fantastic look. The hype is unreal and this adaptation did it justice.

I had a Goliath Zealot Barbarian named Drago that I loved. He was on a mission to kill a god cause that god had his followers kill his whole tribe. My DM let me take a Sun Blade, and some monster moose horns, and forge em together to make a polearm version of the Sun Blade. So much fun. He also was NOT good with charisma, yet the party always wanted him as the figurehead XD.

I wonder if these guys have figured out that the actress who does Kaylie was the same actress who played Lyanna Stark in GoT.

Grog HAD to be the one to finish off Kevdak. If it wasn't him, the Herd of Storms would have fought to the last man. In other words, it would have gone into TPK territory.

This episode makes me cry. When Vex says “Show ‘em who you are!” Tears. Tears everywhere. Also for Kenny: a Barbarian I used to play was an scourge aasimar Barbarian who wielded a war hammer that looked like a lollipop. She was very cheery and would bop the baddies on their heads. :)

I absolutely adore Grog/Travis. Normally I play half-elf rogues/rangers when playing DND, but after watching the first season of this show I finally made myself a Goliath Barbarian very much inspired by Grog, including her baldness and love of ale. In her backstory, she lost her hair in a calamitous fermentation experiment in a sealed barrel that destroyed half her village. To this day I have never had so much fun playing a character and can’t wait to use her again. Barbarians are THE TITS!

Dwarf, Level 5 Totem Warrior Barbarian + Level 2 Monk, He loves rope/whip fighting and I'm basically trying to transform him into a storm/lighting version of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat by using his blacksmithing prof. and the gnome cleric's tinkering prof. to invent Scorpion's arm-mounted kunai. Because of his barbarian totem, is also slowly becoming more wolf-like and I'm predicting my DM is going to eventually involve some werewolf stuff for him at some point as well. He's the party's only forward facing melee fighter and he pisses off the DM because not only does he have like 90HP at level 7, but (for some odd reason) the DM gave him a ring that doubles his damage if he falls under half health. ...no, I DON'T know why the DM wanted to hurt himself in this way... we've suggested counseling...

"I know it's gonna be fine." That's the thing. You don't. It's hard to kill a player character, but it's not impossible. They're getting stronger. But so are their enemies.

Exactly. Vex dying at the Tomb earlier, that was legit. She fully died and if Kash didn't have the right spells prepared, if it had failed, if Vax hadn't succeeded in his bargain, she'd be gone.

In the OG campaign, Grog asks Kevdak if he now squats to piss, which is an even better burn, but they probably changed it for the show because it can come off kind of sexist, I guess.

@Kenny Since watching CR1 every time I played any Barbarian, I would say, "I would like to Rage." One session I saved our entire party from having to fight a celestial demigod because my Fallen Aasimar was the only one who spoke Celestial. Our DM said I saved everyone from a TPK 😂
