WE BROKE DOWN ON DAY 1 (the reality of van life)

After spending 6 months building the DIY ambulance conversion of our dreams, we finally hit the road! Like most things in our lives, this didn't go as planned. We broke down on day 1! This is the reality of van life.

Breaking down adds to the memories! It might not at the time but you’ll be sure to remember it 😂

You guys should really think about a flat tow vehicle for situations just like this. A compact pickup (2004 Tacoma) or something even lighter like a Suzuki Samurai would give you a good backup vehicle and get to places to explore that the main truck just can't go.

Greg's excitement over the cake was just a little much! Diff leak? I'd have moved on to OKC, too. Man, these things hate sitting, don't they? THANK YOU GUYS for taking the time to provide these videos!!! Let's get together in Cabo or East Cape. We have an 08 E450 and we'd get along. Send me a message. Und ich lerne gern Deutsch. :)

Seals can dry out if a vehicle sits for a while. Sometimes the oil can reabsorb and swell the seal back up, stopping the leak. But if it's bad enough it won't. Depending on how bad it is you can just buy a few bottles of 90wt or 85/140 and just keep the level topped up. You have a Cummins engine? Nice! I'm a heavy diesel truck mechanic and Cummins is my favorite engine to work on. Be thankful that it's only a yoke seal. It could just as easily been a wheel seal. Then your differential oil would be leaking into your brake drum and soaking into your brake pads. That's a more expensive repair. Yeah you don't want this virus. I got it a few weeks ago and it took me 18 days to get over it. The real indicator is that my sense of smell totally went away. That's how I can be fairly sure it was the virus. LOL! You should have waited till he woke up before springing the cake on him. That's an incredible camper you have. Must feel a lot more stable than my truck camper (although my truck camper drives pretty well).

Oh, sometimes there are two plugs that you can pull. The oil level should be at the bottom plug but if some dork fills from the top hole the differential can be over full and that can cause leaks even with good seals. Make sure the oil level is even with the lower plug. If you have a 1/2 inch breaker bar I recomending pulling the lower plug (the one that's on the same level with your axles, not the one on the bottom of the diff, since that's the drain), If there's a higher plug, that's where you fill the diff from, then you can watch the lower plug hole and when oil just starts to flow out of that plug, your differential is full. I'd crawl under there and check it if I were you. Is that an FL70 freightliner chassis that your Rv is built on? That's a very good workhorse of a truck.

I drive a Class A and I am a DIY Guy. (Lots of long details in that statement about my Hot Rod Class A.) I carry spare seals, brake shoes and tools to fix things like that. Probably more tools than I'll ever use, but it's nice to be ale to do my own maintenance. Get a lot of flack from family and friends for carry a spare starter, alternator, water pump, spare hoses, blets and air compressor tools to fix it all. It's Just who I am. Once changed a flat for a lady in an RV, on the side of the highway in Nowhere Montana in about 10 minutes. Her Husband was wheelchair bound inside the Camper. Blew her away! Having the right tools makes all the difference. I would have offered my shop to fix it in had I known you were broke down. (If you were closer, of course) Your Rig is one of my favoirte Ambulance builds I've seen. We're located @ 25 miles North of Fort Worth, (11 miles West of the Speedway off I 35.) my shop is a 3000 sqft Commercial building behind my house with huge doors. Could have fixed you up with full hook ups and even a dump station. Would have fixed it just to get a chance to see your work up close. You ever pass this way plan on stopping in. We are right off the highway! Great work Guys!

I thought Greg carried a lot but you’ve got him beat lol Greg was frustrated not fixing this seal himself but we honestly just wanted to get moving. He has soooo many tools but we’re now building a stock of extra parts like seals and belts to have with us too. If we ever pass through your area, we’ll let you know! We love meeting up with people.

I have a choice -- frustrating or fascinating. . A half-century ago, we joined caravans of seasoned travelers. We watched and learned... equipment, procedures, planning. . 2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. Cummins 505ci mechanical, Allison 3060. Twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles around South America. Alaska, Panama, all over North and Central America. Summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes. Winters on isolated Baja beaches. . Stand-still house... not interested.

Welcome to the world of big rig driving, a definite advantage in this commercial drivers’ opinion. You should be able to address all your needs mechanically via a truck stop. Feel free to park in a commercial spot- you’re a big rig now!

I hate my wife's driving too but I am working on being a better passenger by just giving her glares and not saying anything when she hits potholes or stays too long in the passing lane.

Canada? Great job getting out of this first issue. Your attitude towards it does matter and you guys handled it great. Btw, do you need any special licensing for your rig? Seeming as it is a freight liner. Even though its not commercial use.

If the borders open we hope to get to Canada this summer! We don’t need any special licensing for it. Not sure if that varies by state though.

As a RecreateVehicle, the operator license for any vehicle is adequate. If a vehicle is operated commercial for hire, a different license may be demanded by the government agents.
