Van Life Wisdom Mental Health While Living in a Van

In todays video I tell my own story of struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes life can throw things at us that we can’t seem to cope with, and at our lowest points escaping through suicide can seem like our only hope. In my moment of extreme need I turned to a Higher Power and found hope and a way forward there. For years i asked myself every day, “Why should I be alive today?” And the only answer that worked for me was to serve and build a community. Serving others was worth the pain, when nothing else was. I hope you can find something of value in this video.

even if your own life is a mess ,if you are able to help someone else in some way to manage there life or be happier you have done something profound. My step dad was bi polar/manic depressive, I grew up seeing(experiencing) his struggle , despite the fact that he was sometimes very hard to be around his overall influence was still good, I love him very much, he taught be many things and some of the best parts of my personality came from him. he is in his late 60's now and somehow has very much leveled off , he is pretty content in life and doesnt have such huge swings anymore. he is a really good man that I love dearly and I love the aspects of myself and interests I gained from him.

Bob is a good and concise speaker. Has he thought about doing a Ted Talk? (I don't know if Ted Talks pay anything, but that's neither here nor there.) Depression has been in my life in myself and loved ones, and in another video Bob said do everything you can to think about others and not yourself. Depression tricks you into navel gazing and so yes; working on anything (anything!) outside oneself is the answer.

I describe it just they way you did, not mopey and sad but definitely not happy. Ive talk to my doctors of course and have never let it take full control but really just having someone like you be so open about how they feel and have felt, is such a boost knowing Im not alone in the way I have felt. Im not on the road yet but I bought a van in October for a hell of a good deal I think just repairing the body work on it so I can finish the rest of the build on the inside and hit the road this summer. Thanks for everything you and everyone that helps this channel operate do.

I get so excited whenever I see you have uploaded a new video and have learned so much though your channel-especially through your interviews/RV tours. You’re an excellent interviewer and I love that you interview all kinds of people and give us a little glimpse of their story. I’m happy you had the courage to share your own story and struggle with mental health. I can’t even begin to image the pain you felt losing your son, and all of the other struggles that were compounding at that point in your life, but I am so grateful that your friend came in at the right time to help you begin to cope and heal. Oh, Bob, I'm so very, very sorry about your son! I cannot even begin to imagine going through that. I'm shocked how many people I now know whose children have committed suicide, including a close cousin, and a close friend of my brother's. It seems to be an epidemic in the children of our generation - a truly terrible one. I'm so glad you've found a new reason to live, though. Helping others *is* the way through depression, to that I can also personally attest. Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm very grateful you are still here, sharing your knowledge, which is likely to help *me* survive in the likely not very distant future. I do hope we can eventually meet, but even if we never do, I respect and admire you and what you have built and continue to do to help others. May you continue to find purpose and meaning in your life. Wendy

Thank-you, Bob. I've been an voracious follower of yours, gleaning every bit of knowledge from you that I can. You've made statements about how you need to be alone..... and yes, at those times you do. Hearing your deepest truth humbled me. There is no way to readjust to such a loss. All of those times when you asked, "Why can't I leave?" Yes, it took a little while and now you know. The majority of those in your audience are here by necessity and had no point of reference of how to pull it off until they found you on KZread. You needed KZread to reach all of these folks, including me. You needed your period of adjustment so you can tell others that it takes a period of adjustment, after each loss, to find a purpose. You found yours and touched thousands of lives. One of the greatest things you have done is to remove the stigma of being homeless and living in a vehicle. Thank-you, Bob.

My wife was also diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Disorder in 2014 so she has changed into a completely different person who feels differently about me now. I am a prisoner to both her and my mother's needs. I have no life of my own and no happiness, only depression. I find escape in watching van life, truck camper life, and RV life in general videos on KZread. I am a writer with currently 8 self published books. I have more stories to write but my depression is crippling me and preventing me from doing so. One day I hope to live the nomad life. Thanks for sharing Bob. I think it's not natural for us to be housed up. Working so much handing out money to others to get rich, that we forget to make a LIFE or don't have time to do anything but work and sleep. That's existing not living being mobile means you can work part time and have a quality of life because your pay isn't going to make everyone else rich.

When you spoke to GOD from your heart he answered as he always does to show you he is able and no matter how hard it may seem he will always be there for you. You are an inspiration to many and through your good deeds and guidance of others within this community you are laying many treasures up in Heaven where it matters most. That's why GOD protected you through it all and sent you your friend as a earthly guardian angel at your time of need. GOD bless

Beautiful!!! I have lost a brother and a brother-in-law to suicide in the last 18 months and this after losing both parents in the six months before. If it were not for the support of a few friends and family members, the waves of depression may very well have consumed me. My doctor lost his son to suicide in 2018. He highly recommended that I do what he did... hit the road and get into nature. That's when, at 60 years old, I outfitted my SUV for a trip from SE Texas to the Appalachians, all by myself and it was amazing. I still live in my home near my support group, but I do travel alone. Thank you for this!!! Our Higher Power listens and directs people into our lives in some pretty amazing ways. Make time to be alone in nature, but don't neglect that wonderful net of people that literally save lives.

Mental health is so important ! Thank you for sharing your story. I am so Grateful that Steve came into your life when he did as it allowed you to open the door to others. Being on the road has been a dream for many years, 2 years ago I was in an auto accident with black ice, totalled 'George Washme' my Jeep. I broke both my legs, my dominate arm and my autonomy to say the least. Oh I had plans for George! That was 2 years ago and 2 days ago. Watching your videos have been one of my best therapies! I continue to struggle with the autonomy and have to locate new transportation but you have kept me going and for this I thank you. Bless you all!

Thanks so much Bob. I’m watching this surrounded by my new nomad friends in the Woman’s Caravan in the La Paz Valley.. From the testimonies shared at the campfire each night, I can attest that your efforts have profoundly helped an amazing amount of people. As Stephen Hawkins said, “No matter how difficult life is, there is always something helpful we can do.” (Something like that.) This was my first RTR. So glad to be a part of it. Next time hope to share my appreciation face to face. Mary Ames Mitchell

Bob you are blessed and highly favored. Thank you for your story. I have not found a tribe. I do cry a lot. My life is not mine to take, so when public I out on my happy face. When I am alone. I keep telling myself I'm blessed and highly favored. One day I will find friends that are like minded. I don't drink, smoke, or put anything in my body that is not wholesome. A big problem.

I have not been suicidal, per se, but I was the "living dead" while being severely depressed, losing several years to it and what you said about your dog resonates with me. If it wasn't for my dogs and cats, I would've lived much more poorly, as it was them that got me up and moving day-by-day through the worst of it all. Thank you for sharing your story and yourself to us. It means more than words could ever explain. 💗
