@@skiptastic1000I don’t think that is true. Most land rovers have issues but the LR3s are pretty good. it’s pretty common to find them with over 250k miles.

Those are not major issues. A solid weekend and some parts and all of that is fixed.

These are mostly little annoying issues that a lot vehicles develop over time. The air suspension is expensive, but it has reached the end of it's life, so that is really just a maintenance item. None of these things will leave you stuck on the side of the road.

$116 for a new strut . they're no more than a regular strut and no re programming is necessary . all of those are easy easy fixes .

My LR 3 V8 SE has 224,000 miles on it. It’s been my daily car for the past 14 years. I go with it everywhere; shopping, travelling, off-roading, rock crawling, wading, etc. It had/has issues. You need to love it and be ready to maintain it. It’s one of the best cars I have owned . I’m looking for a replacement 😊

@@salonh2715 every old car will have timing chain issues even new cars have timing chain issues , I had a Merc with 32,000 miles on the clock and had a chain stretch , the guy as had his 14 yrs and sounds like its going strong

I love how everything Tommy said was a "misconception" about these Land Rovers in the last video is a problem in this video.

@@LafemmebearMusic Nah, There's not much there that's an "electrical gremlin". It's all stuff where the cause is pretty obvious and buying some parts off eBay would fix the issues... for anybody who actually WANTED to own a Land Rover.

Am I the only one who thinks Alex is whining? Most of those issues are relatively easy to address and not too expensive.

LR4 Owner here. Maintenance issues all the time. Bought it from CarMax with their warranty. They are definitely upside down on warranty payouts! Wouldn't trade it for the world. I keep tricking it out.

Sorry to say this and I love Alex but this is a lot of whining. Most of these issues can be fixed with $100-200 in cheap (some used) parts. It has never left Alex stranded, sounds like no engine or drive train issues, the interior looks great… anyone who buys ANY 10+ year old car MUST be expecting these issues. You can’t buy an old car and expect it to be like new… especially not with 150,000 miles. Most people with 150,000 mile cars are just happy the car still drives and doesn’t get stuck. If anything, he got an AMAZING vehicle with VERY minor issues that can be easily fixed. If it was a Toyota he won’t even pip about it - there would be no video, he would just get it fixed and go on with his life… 🤦‍♂️ (and, yes, high speced Toyota’s with lots of electronics also break after 10+ years and 150,000 miles)

I had a high mileage LR3 and had sunroof drain issue(free fix for me just some time to do it), had key ignition issue that was solved with some cheap sensor I got online, fuel door the LR dealer said was a common issue, got me a $12 clip thing and put it in free in 2 mins, that was about it, other than air shocks slowly leaking... but overall it was much more reliable than everyone told me it would be. 4.4 V8 SE

Sounds like you actually fixed things properly. Good on you! The opposite of what's happening in this video: How is it legitimate to complain about the fuel door not working and then try to fix it with tape and magnets?! "Oh it doesn't work" Spent a couple bucks on the proper parts and fix the damn thing properly. This is why cars get shitty over time- people don't fix them properly.

Job well done. Euro cars are the same sometimes. Simple annoying fixes. His issues are super minor but some people don't like to mess with anything, they want everything to work at it should even after 20yrs.

All of Alex's issues are easily fixable and not fatal but clean the sunroof drains! It's a typical used vehicle and it actually seems like a pretty good one. My 134k 2012 Jeep GC had oil leaks, a broken parking brake and a bad torque converter. My 2017 Jaguar F-Pace blew it's turbo twice in 65k miles and now has a new engine. My 74k 2014 BMW i3 has a new drive motor & electronics. Worst car ever is very relative.

My wife and I owned a 2014 certified preowned LR4 LUX we drove that thing from 48,000 miles until 156,000 miles with absolutely no problems. I traded it in in pristine condition for $5000. One of my greatest automotive regrets of all time.

My name is Alex and I also have a 2005 LR3 4.4 with 154k miles that I purchased last year. I bought mine with 149k miles. It needed some things, but its an amazing vehicle. I've had plenty of other cars and sport cars and it has by far been my favorite vehicle. His is a great one to buy as all of the issues are pretty small and easy to fix. mine needed: - Mass Airflow Sensor (can use a toyota branded denso sensor for $25) -PCV valve -All struts were leaking and replaced (used Maxpeeding rods brand and they are great so far) -Valve blocks (tried rebuilding, but the front and rear were leaking from the connector, so I replaced them with amazon units and they are fine) -Fuel Door is a very quick, easy and cheap fix (had that issue too) - The 2005-2006 had an issue with the antenna for the keyless remotes coming unsoldered. Just re-soldered it, free easy fix -Transmission pan, filter, and electrical connector replaced as the pan was leaking -upgraded the front diff breather (original was clogged (common issue on the early LR3s)) -Changed diff fluids -Changed Transfer case fluid -Radiator broke when closing the hood once, so I replaced that and the coolant. -Wheel bearing -Starter -O2 sensor (rear bank 2 went bad) -Rebuilt the air compressor (dryer pack filters fail and the desiccant gets through the system and causes issues. The exhaust valve in the compressor had clogged some, so I cleaned it and stopped getting errors for that)). A lot of this happened when I bought it. It was a bit misrepresented and I also didn't catch the leaking transmission. Its pretty well sorted now. I think the replacement wheel bearing is failing, so I'll replace it with a better unit, I just used what the carpart store had available. It needs the lower steering shaft and a passenger side outer tie-rod. I may just go ahead and replace both sides inner and outer tie rods. Seems like a lot, but they are really easy to work on for the most part. The starter wasn't too fun to replace. The fuel level sensor has failed, so I'll need to drop the tank and replace the sensor as well. It needs some cosmetic work, re-died the passenger seat and the driver's seat needs it. I'd like to buff and ceramic coat the outside. Around 120k miles, mine got an alternator and water pump. I guess it seems like a lot and it was since I didn't expect to do so much, but now it is so great. I can't wait to take it off road and hope to explore the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway as well as the Kentucky Adventure Trail with it. His air strut may not be leaking. I'd replace the valve block and the dryer pack in the compressor. Also upgrade to the aluminum hat for the dryer pack on the compressor.

I had an LR3 and the only issue was a sometimes the transmission felt weird, I added trans fluid and it took care of it, it was the best and most comfortable suv I've had, the only issue or advice I would give someone is: While you don't have to be rich to maintain one you do need a special OBD Gap tool and they are around 500 usd and it's vin coded to your LR3, you can't use someone else's and it's essential to maintenance and have a couple grand for either preventinve or corrective maintenance (but that's kinf of the same for any mid 2000's suv that you buy). Do a lot of research and look for aftermarket quality parts, sometimes some ford fluids or parts are usable. Lastly I had to sell my LR3 to fix my newer Toyota (weird right??) and now I replaced the LR3 with a Sequoia and although I love it, the LR3 is miles away with comfort and general driving experience.

Clean out the sun roof drains with some weed eater string and compressed air.

I daily a ‘16 LR4 HSE SCV6 for the last four years and have put 50k miles on it without a single issue at all. I do all my own maintenance on it, and so far that has been replacing the brake pads, regular oil changes, and the secondary stop start battery (it was just old). It is the easiest vehicle I’ve ever seen to change the oil in, as it has a built in tube to attach an extractor pump to as well as having the oil filter on top of the motor - takes me under 10 minutes to change oil and I don’t have to get under it!

@@Matt-rq6wz It’s at 75k miles total. Since mine is the Jag SCV6, it doesn’t really have the timing and coolant crossover pipe issues that the earlier V8s are infamous for. If you’ve got the V8, I’d recommend the upgraded timing shoe replacements to keep it going.

@@tommydouglas3911 interesting. I have the same year and motor as you. Mine has already had the X pipe replaced by the previous owner. I thought they all came with that stupid two piece design that cracks. I’ve got an oil leak now and will be replacing the brake vacuum pump but it’s not a difficult job. I’m at 116k miles so I’ll be tackling the transfer case and trans fluids here soon. HD package. The timing guides don’t have issues on ours but chain stretch beyond the tensioners ability can happen if people choose the 16k oil change interval that LR recommended.

You’re still lucky compared to my LR experiences Alex. My final problem was my cooling fan always being stuck on and thousands of dollars at specialty LR shops couldn’t fix it. It would eventually go into limp mode because of it and was undrivable. Sold it for penny’s on the dollar from what I had in it.

That sounds like a low voltage issue. Whenever the battery or alternator is getting ready to die, that's a common symptom.

Enjoyed the juxtaposition of the 2 ownership experiences.

It is the time to have an lr4 and compare it to the lr3. Oh please! Curious to see the differences between them...

By contrast, I just bought an '08 with 165K on the clock after watching all of the TFL coverage of the LR3. $8k for the truck, $13k in repairs and preventative maintenance including (heater coil, A/C condenser, front driver's heated seat, TPMS module). Expensive? Absolutely. Worth it? 100%. I fully intend on taking it past 200k, and could not be happier with the purchase.

Tommy talks so much of wanting simple basic vehicles, and even purchased a stripper wrangler. But apparently he realized that was a bad idea and now drives this which is much much more comfortable

I had a 2006 LR3 HSE V8 with the heavy duty package which I bought in 2012 with 80k miles, then bought the Gap II tool 2 month after that. I drove it till 2019 and sold it with 160k miles, I loved that car! Did most of the usual repairs myself, the air compressor dryer with the steel cover, handbrake with the copper gear center mod, rebuilt the front air suspension valve with new rings, tail gate opener... It was an amazing car for the kids, offroad...

I refuse to believe that a vehicle can be worse than my 2016 Ford Transit.

I currently have a 2005 Landrover LR3/Discovery 3 ,had it for the last 10 years 358 000 kms on the clock.Only issue which we new about when we bought it was the front control arms replacement very easy replacement.Its been absoloutely fantastic, tows caravan regularly and does what is required.All I ever hear are complaints about these Discos,not from me. I changed from Toyota landcruiser to Landrover without regrets. Toyota are very strict on the amount of bad news on their vehicles. While my Disco continues to do what is required of it, I will keep it.

Our 2006 lr3 has been on original air suspension and compressor, still work, only issues we’ve had were a result of wheeling, or mudding. Ac compressor, driveshaft, etc. we did have a coolant leak, but it wasn’t a big deal. Great truck! We’ve put 40k on ours since buying

Once owned a 1998 Disco 2 - cost me $1000 every six months for stupid repairs. Sold it to a guy who had an emotional connection to that model since he grew up with it in South America. Before he bought it, he asked me about reliability. I told him, honestly, it was probably about average for that model. UGH and NEVER AGAIN.

If you have to pay someone to fix it. It's not the vehicle for you. They're simple to work on and parts aren't too bad If you know where to buy. Taking it to a mechanic everytime something acts up will definitely make you sell it.

That’s why you take the car to get inspected before you purchase it. They have all the resources available to them and still didn’t do their due diligence. 08 LR3 owner here, best car I have ever owned. Again, fix everything that needs to be fix and proper maintenance.

My Disco II: head gaskets, drive shaft, transmission, diff leaks, no radio, radiator, electric seats… all with 120k miles

Alex, dude you're going to have to find someone who loves the LR3 to end your Land Rover misery! Maybe Brendan will buy it.

I love sunroofs, moonroofs, and pano roofs...but will admit they can be a pain with added complications during (especially long-term) ownership even with an ostensibly reliable vehicle in terms of breaking, leaking, etc.

The door latch is a cheap fix. The part is BPA780110 and is below $10. Easy to fix and will check one of those boxes off the list before selling it. Cleaning the sunroof drains can be done with a can of compressed air.

This is really good advice for anyone buying anything. Ask Ben Hardy! Sun roofs do more than just leak. Accessories are expensive and they can't break if you don't have them. Put a 2" coil spring kit on it and clear wrap the roof.

Clearing the sunroof drains is pretty simple and easy. Had to clear both of mine, driver and passenger, and wasn't a terrible job.

To be fair though it is pretty old seems like normal stuff for an old car a bit gimmicky but still works

Just clocked 320000km's trouble free on my 2010 TDV6 D4 diesel here in rural Australia bar one (1) air-compressor pump. The rest has all been standard (plus forward) servicing items. Definitely replace the oil sump pan and service every 50,000 kms. Magnatech 5w-40 oil every 5000km's. These trucks are truly phenomenal on and off-road. I waited and waited with great anticipation to buy and love the new 300 Series Landcruiser - but after a full day comparison/test drive - no thanks I'll keep pushing 'the Disco' onwards towards the 700-800km's many have covered here down under.

I get 19.4 MPG on my 08 V8. Love it so much.

Had the same key issue on my 1998 Buick Regal GS. That's the ignition lock cylinder

I loved my LR3 but it had all sorts of electrical issues. That was the only thing I didn't like about it. Mechanically it was fantastic. Sold it with around 260,000 miles on it. I miss it sometimes. It was an amazing ride overall.

I have a Disco 3 (LR3) TDV6 with 289k miles (461k km) and love it. Get a GAP Tool and see how easy many of the bings and bongs are fixed.

Fix that air strut. If it is leaking the compressor will be working harder and you’ll lunch that too. I agree it doesn’t sound that bad overall for a car of the age and mileage.

Shouldve came to Texas for that TJ, bought mine last year, clean as a whistle, no rust, 4L, $9k, and prices have dropped since

20 years old and 151000 miles what do you expect i own rr sport had it 12 years and now on 200,000 miles and its been very reliable

Alex's LR3 sounds like my '08 Ram 2500. The truck is dope, it's never left me stranded, but there's always random little crap breaking that drives me crazy.

I have had my LR3 for about two years. The only issue i have had is the driver rear door does not lock. But i just have been to lazy to fix it. And i will be replacing all the air struts as they are still new from factory and just want to do it for ease of mind.

Sunroof, drain clog easy to fix get your truck in each corner in the front of the sunroom open there’s two small holes that fit, and now unclog it and also you can use compress air to blow it out. Use the chip to inflate a ball beach ball it will work

So, apart from 20 year old suspension needing replacing (to be expected at that age and mileage) Not a lot went wrong and it's the WORST car he's ever had??? The biggest expense was $18 for a key that didn't need buying rather than address the faulty ignition lock by the looks of it. (Needing to juggle the key to get it out and not charging the key etc) after 150,000 miles. Routine maintenance would more than likely fix the other issues.

Alex's LR is holding up better than I thought. Other than the key and door locks issues it's been golden. The other issues are NBD to me. Looks like a good solid $3500 car.

Even though it doesn't seem like you don't have expensive issues still one issue after another would get old quickly. I once bought a GM product the very same way, just issue after issue so it had to go. I now have an 18 year F-150 that I've had for four years with 200,000 miles & have not done one single thing to it. Better luck on your next vehicle.

These kids don’t even know they’re born if they consider those issues to be “terrible”. Pair of softies. It’s a 20 year old car and a weekend effort would see all it sorted.

Alex there seems to be in an issue in the steering column area that may be the root to a Few of your issues. Ground Issue. Also I would check voltage going to the wiper motor. Some vehicles tend to have water and debris clog near the motor.

Didn’t Case buy a Disco recently as well? How’s that one doing?

Honestly, all the "problems" Alex listed are just inconveniences, not the problems at all. No blown engines, no toasted gearboxes, nothing which makes the car non-drivable and requires very expensive repair. Terrible mpg aside, I'd be happy to own it.

I had one Land Rover product and that has been it. Brake issues forever, alarm key fob wouldn't let me start the car in the cold and on and on.

Everyone’s rover experience is different. When you spend enough time around them you really start to see where issues lie and what might need fixing. They are high maintenance vehicles and love to be pampered but I find no other vehicle I get as much joy out of. And now having owned 2 D1s I still wouldn’t trade the pain for anything, even if my current 2500k mile one needs a transfer box. In other news with all the rovers at TFL are they going to make the national Land Rover rally this year?

Have had the "equivalent" L320 RR Sport for over 6 years now...I have been surprised at how good it has been. Hopefully, it continues to be good!!

ill stick with my disco ii , ones with ACE and rear SLS are the best rovers if you ask me but $116 would get you a new air strut and new drain tube ends would fix the sunroof leaks . new stock for the wipers . no check engine means ALOT ! eh

Are the front seats the same? If so, swap the driver's with the shotgun. That way, the driver gets the heated seat. Air suspension leak, check out LR Time, a German couple who keep an Discovery 3 (as it is known there) on the road and working perfectly. They have had slow leaks, but these were mostly from the air distribution plenum by the front passenger wheel. Replace gaskets and o-rings (quite fiddly) before the compressor burns out from over-use. Pretty sure they talk about how they keep the drains clean. They may have more information on the key issues, etc. The more problems fixed, the more money can be asked for 😁

My dads 2015 Lexus ES with only 90k miles. Passenger door lock actuator and heated seats switch are broken, also a squeaking sound from rear.

ahhhhh no auto headlights yup a lot of work to turn them i need nap when i turn mine on.

I'm not sure car auctions and dealers can pass along service records anymore like they may have done in the past. Service records generally contain personal information of past owners, which is much more regulated now. Businesses can be fined if they do not protect that information from getting someone else's hands.

Tommy, tell Alex that if is he looking back in admiration then he is already hooked. None of his issues are terminal and with a little work it will be a great vehicle again.

Doesn't sound like there's a single thing that would cost more than $500 if he cared to fix it. Had 4 older Range Rovers, 2 LR3, and now 2013 LR4. The LR4 is the best vehicle I've ever had. There isn't a single new suv I'd rather have!

Those are minor issues. Maybe the air ride but everything else is self Diy. For a 20 yr old car, its doing pretty well.

Question to those with conventional struts: How often do those fail? Haven't had those for a long time but I remember I had to change those at least once when I had.

My 2006 LR3 6 cylinder zero issue ever.. 210,000 miles I was going to trade it in and I was only offered $500. I laughed my ass off. Never buy the V8 buy the ford ranger 6 cylinder, great motor. It’s hard for me to believe that you don’t understand how cheap and easy these parts are to find and purchase. Best riding car I’ve ever driven.

The V6 is no where near as reliable as the 4.4 V8. The v6 is an interference engine, so if the timing chains go... so does your engine.

I love my 2008 LR3 HSE V8, and my teenager daughters especially love it!

7:15 - ATTENTION: the key thing should be repaired asap or you might otherwise strand somewhere with a car you can not lock and have to leave behind open. Here nothing will happen cause in our area at least (not many refugees) Germany is a safe place but in the USA an unlocked car attracks whatever people who then can also start the engine. A friend had one and faced the same issue at one day on an Aldi parking lot but he had to leave to get to a burial on the other side of the road. 5 hours later he went to the dealer who had told him that "micro switches" could be the issue or wear and tear from too many short trips. Was not that expensive to repair, less than 150€ or so.

Re the silver LR3…… I experienced exactly the same problems…. fuel flap broke….leaking sunroof…. key problems ……. Air suspension problems…. Etc etc in my 1996 P38 V8 4.6l Range Rover!!!! Clearly Land Rover like to repeat the same mistake in all their vehicles!! Regards Ian 👨‍🎤🇳🇿😎👍😂😂🍸🍸

My 2005 LR3 had all of those problems when I sold it a few years ago at 168K miles. They are all minor fixes and/or quirks that you can fix easily or live with (except the heated seat- I let that one go as too expensive to be worth fixing.) I'll take it off your hands!

I think an LR3 vrs Escalade Posh Off is in order.

Tommy get that ac properly serviced if the presseures are not correct ie too high which is common when using fhe store but ac recharge cans your risking major repairs do to blowz seals or compressor falure.$$$ not worth a $20 dollar can.

Had. 2004 D2, and it was a high maintenance beast. I've had a 2005 LR3, and it had transmission solenoid issues and all that. Have a 06 now, and it has a vacuum leak, and the clock spring is wonky. It's just how it is. I'll give you $3k for yours, Alex.

The wiper switch is also not a big thing and can have been caused before if water has also get to it and caused corrosion. You had shown it had hit the dashboard, maybe the previous owner had a similiar event before and it hat hit the steering wheel and steering column and that has caused the corrosion. Otherwise the switch has to be replaced, but that can become more difficult, but I bet the forum members will have a detailed explanation. As always: less can be more which means buy cheaper and have more money in reserve to fix things or for upgrades you might want. More miles does not mean worser, can be the opposite cause it has been used more frequently and also gotten maintenance cause owners on long distance trip usually take more care to avoid a glitch on the highway, at least here where other cars can pass you with over 240 km/h just a meter away from your door.

How can you verify the title is clean if the old vin isn’t visible? I guess it’s legally clean but the history is unknown.
