We Attempt To Break The Penny Farthing Hour World Record!

Спорт

Popular in the late 1800s, the penny-farthing is one of the most iconic bikes of all time. But how fast is it? We teamed up Guinness World Records and Mark Beaumont to see if we could set a new world record on a penny-farthing. How far could we ride one in an hour?

To be honest, I wasn't really very fond of Hank when he first came to the channel, but through videos such as this one, the stage of the first TdF video and crit racing videos, I have garnered so much respect for him. Simply a top lad and a total badass. Also, congrats to all three of you, this was just insane!

They may seem ridiculous to you, but up until the 1880s, the 'Ordinary' or 'high wheeler' was the pinnacle of cycling. Many of the things we take for granted were invented for them. Hollow (cold drawn) steel frame tubing, wheels with tensioned steel spokes and later on, tangential spoking, drop handlebars, hollow rims, ball bearing equipped, adjustable hubs... all developed to improve the penny farthing. They were lightweight, streamlined speed machines, just like the carbon bikes of today. 🙂

At the end of the day, it's still a bike. People used these to do all sorts of things on them, right up to the 1890s, when the 'Safety bicycle' had overtaken the High Wheeler or Ordinary bicycle (common contempory names) in popularity. You can still do those things today, but without the Victorian clothes! 😁

@@Bartooc No, the British weren't the first or only country to ride or race them. France and Germany were certainly there before us. The outbreak of the Franco/Prussian war temporarily stopped development on the continent, allowing Britain to become the centre of cycling for a time. Britain wasn't involved in that war, so resources and materials were still available. We did create the modern 'Safety Bicycle' though. 😁

@@Rick--A-F Back in the day (1860s to late 1880s) they certainly made bikes with non-round tubes. Whether or not they were actually much more aerodynamic back then, I can't say, but modern aero tubing wouldn't seem out of place on a Penny. Whether there are any builders out there who are using it is another matter... PF builders are few and far between at the best of times.
