Riding around a velodrome for that length of time is an extraordinary mental feat. The degree of sensory deprivation resulting from seeing the same featureless, unchanging landscape thousands of times can drive even the most disciplined athletes insane. I understand why an indoor velodrome presents ideal physical conditions in some respects, but it must be the absolute worst place for an extremely time intensive effort. I would wager that an outdoor cycle park road coarse of maybe 5-10km with unique features, flowing curves and even a bit of gradient change would be much better for the mind. In any case, I'm very impressed by this man and by the team that supported him.

Amazing. I once did 480Km in 24 hours on open roads and that was fun. Then I did 550Km on a closed 3Km race course with some significant corners where you have to brake and can stand on the pedals out of corners and doing almost 200 laps was boring, then I did half ironman and doing 90Km mostly in aTT position was not easy. I cannot imagine doing 3000 laps at a constant speed in TT position (without even talking about the Watts required) for that amount of time even if the bike and velodrome can make you go 5 to 10 Km faster with the same wattage being in that position for 24 hours at constant speed is mind-boggling....

How does the mind overcome something as arduous and physically severe as this? I compare this to the Breaking 2 / 1.59 projects, and hear about how Eliud Kipchoge can compartmentalize the pain in his mind, and wonder can normal mortals do this?
@Spirit_Matters.Arthur
4 жыл бұрын
@@moonootoo First of all I believe that every mortal human being is capable of achieving "exceptional" things. That said, I don't think a lot are willing to put themselves through this kind of agony. Your comparison with the B2 project and the way Kipchoge runs his long distance race by judging it as short distances in sequence is a great way of comparing these kind of feeds. The only real difference is time, even though 2 hours of running at 21kph is tough it is nothing compared to driving 39kph with a bike.. For 24hours! The athlete in this video is an extreme cyclist who does long distances so I think he deemed himself worthy for this prjocet. The only thing he did not keep in mind is surroundings. There's a huge difference between driving through massive landscapes or riding circles and seeing the same building over and over. Once again I really believe that they did not put enough effort in looking at the mental side, I really feel like the athlete should almost put himself in a state where he is addicted to the idea of achieving this new record. Lastly I still think his performance deserves a clap of hands because whatever the reason for him to stop the project, he still drove around 12 hours!!

Like he said, it's all about pacing. If you could lower your speed a little, you'll easily do a 100K. I ride my cheap MTB on tarmac every Sunday. Went from 10K to 100K in a matter of weeks. I constantly try to keep my pace low, 18-20 km/hour.

@@mitesh8utube this is true. just keep a steady pace and you'll be surprised how far you can go.
Brilliant variation on the weekly content.. Nice one Hank 👍 more track please!!
Watching this attempt is quite challenge...but u did it ,u the man.
He just gave me a boost in life. I mean, he's older than I am and he was able to ride for that long even after he crashed. Big ups to him and his team. Thank you and I hope one day you'll attempt it again. You opened up a world of different possibilities to many.

Thanks, glad it was helpful. Age is just a number and yes you can make lots of progress with hard work. Never let anyone tell you differently.
Another proof what a badass Christoph Strasser is to set this record. But big respect to James for trying. Takes a lot of balls to prepare and go for it.
James - We'll be waiting and watching for your next attempt, its not a matter of "If" but "when" - well done mate!
The sticker adds 50 horsepower
Any 24 hour event is nuts. Concentration at that speed for that long is near impossible
James is a beast! He will get that record some day. I'm definitely inspired to see how long I can just stay on the KICKR this week. Great doc as always, guys.
This inspired me to stay at Olympic distance triathlon. Some challenges have to be left to the pros. What a great athlete!
Maarten van der wijeden , from holland ( where i live) just completed a 200 kilometor swimming route in one go, he swam 76 hours long.

Kijk daar zijn wij de echte pros in HUP HOLLAND
Me and 6 other guys (+ a support crew in a car handing out supplies) did 24H and 525 km in one go last year. It was a fantastic ride through the night and into daylight. Just planing and taking on 950 km in 24h deserves a huge amount of respect.
Massive kudos to James MacDonald for trying something amazing! He is an inspiration to us amateurs with day jobs to attempt something that seems to be beyond our ability (with causing bodily harm, of course!).
What a mammoth, monstrosity of an insane effort! Well done for the attempt! Respect for giving it a go and for contributing towards improving the over pool of cycling knowledge. Will be looking out for your second attempt! 🎉🎉🎉
Watching this, I feel inspired to attempt my first 100km ride this weekend

I did it today.. kept thinking about this video during the times I felt like giving up
This video has inspired me to commute to work every day by bike, no matter what the weather ... from now on, it means every working day is a cycling day. It's only 17km a day, but it's still a huge challenge for me.

Kroent that's fantastic new, I used to love my commute into work but it's way too far now. Great way to get fit, improve mental state and save money 👍
Big Respect to James, to even attempt it is a big accomplishment and even when he crashed he kept going. What A Man! I'm sure he'll be back!
Well done, Thanks GCN for covering it so well
Man, that's just heartbreaking to see James' attempt derailed by a small twist of fate. Hands on your back for attempt #2, good sir.
As a compatriot of Christoph Strasser I'm now even more proud of what he achieved...these two competitors remind me of Boardman vs Obree, smashing each others records and pushing the limit further ... hope to see the next attempt on GCN again
Absolute bad ass. Sometimes it just doesn't work out.
So inspirational Mister MacDonald, keep going
I once participated in a 24-hour amateur car endurance race using a Mazda Miata (MX5) and I thought that was one of the hardest things I ever did and we had 3 drivers to split up the drive. Just keeping awake the whole time was hard and the none stop noise of cars made impossible to sleep. I can't imagine doing what he is doing.
"Don't try this at home" nah bro i would definettly like to go biking at my appartment for 24 h😂😂
What an impressive level of preparation, whatever the outcome. Respect! ✊

wow, i was just thinking this yesterday while cycling : “what if I was cycling 24hours, did anyone already done it’’, that’s cool I found this video
Grate effort m8, you'll get it next time!

Why the f**k there is always someone to dislike a video like this???? That was an amazing video, cheers James, hope you try it again, next time you'll make it and hopefully the whole attempt will be broadcasted live via KZread!
after crash sit back and go for plan B was a real mental victory! amazing job anyway. so inspiring!
This fascinating! Congratulations to the whole team.
Really great job by hank. Top drawer presenting. Well done.
I can’t feel his pain, that’s a torturous endeavour. I did a brutish cycling challenge for June to complete 1,250KM and the last 8 days of the challenge, I had to do 50 miles per day. May be I can take on the challenge to ride for 24 hours but absolutely not at that pace. I really appreciated the guy who hold the record. He is a monster.
Good luck James. Hope you come back stronger soon.
Props to this guy, great effort and come back stronger
Heroic effort. Broke my heart.
Great story. He’ll be back. What an astonishing effort.
I used to train for rugby in the velodrome and I played at the behind on the AstroTurf for football.
kudos for even attempting the challange!!
With all the money spent on this attempt you would think they would have had the temperature set to whatever works best for James. Not sure if they would have had to bring in more equipment. Even if everybody else had to wear coats.

Generally with velodromes, the temperature and humidity need to be specifically set to maintain the integrity of the wood boards. You can’t seal the wood as that would create an extremely slippery surface.

I feel for him and the rest involved. To bad... But great to see it here at GCN.
Man, I can only imagine what he went through. I biked 34mi yesterday on my fixed gear and that kicked my butt. Before the longest I had done was 15mi. I have so much respect for athletes like James.
Christoph Strasser did this on the street a week ago and pulled 1026,215km in 24h in the Rain here in Austria 🔥
