Just a suggestion, if you have spare seed of Steve why don't you sell them to people who watch your grow along and give the money to a cancer charity in memory of Steve who we all loved. I for one would be interested.

“Traumatic little sods” 😂😂😂😂 love this description of onions. One thing about potting up to another size is to ensure your potting mix has good drainage and to be moderate in your watering of the young plants. Soil should be moist, not soggy and bottom watering is the best way that I have found to manage this. Leave the tray/ pots in water until soil moist and then remove the water. Resist the temptation to re-water if the top of the soil dries out. There still is plenty of moisture in the soil when the plant’s root system is small. Eli did you get Kate a can of paint for her birthday? 😂

Potting up is something more experienced gardeners do here in the U.S. (I'm on the western slope of Colorado). Although I should say that not all experienced gardeners do this. It seems to be a matter of preference. I personally start my seeds just as you do and then pot up into a mix of soil and compost. Has worked very well for the over 5 decades I've been gardening. Thanks for another wonderful video!

@@eliandkate lol! No, well, yes I guess. Colorado is divided geographically into east and west by the Continental Divide. Most people think of Denver when they think of Colorado, but that's on the eastern part of the divide and completely different from the western part. On the western side we call it the Western Slope. We're considered the banana belt of the state as the climate is usually more temperate here. We're rural, nice folk on the Western Slope, as opposed to the city people on the eastern side. Hope that explains it. 😄

I love listening to you. Have you ever considered reading children’s stories? Sincerely, your voice is lovely! You are also a very knowledgable gardener. I am learning a lot from your videos. Thanks.

😂planting each onion, what patience! I just had milk jugs I crammed a bunch into and still had nice sized onions just like the store. Your learning 😂 Holding off yet on winter sowing because it’s too warm. And definitely holding off on onions as I had to give those hedges many haircuts 😂 I had several pots full of various types. We loved the smell after their haircuts😅. That’s right, another reason not in a hurry is those hard freezes knock plants back. Robs energy. Can’t believe it’s so warm that the fence can be stained. We are on our way to be 30 degrees above normal. This has been going on since the last week of January and it’s not normal. We are sitting under a heat bubble, CA right now has a Pineapple Express that looks to be stalling out and will continue to Tuesday-not good and Nova Scotia has snow past their heads😮. Reed Timmer will be covering more of the flooding at sunrise if you want to check in on that. I seen pics of Nova Scotia and that was eye opening. I have no idea how the roofs were still holding all that weight. When you get that much snow it’s a bit smothering. There were people standing where they shoveled and all you could see was their head. In snow like that you have to keep moving it or you won’t be able to later. Thank you! Happy Birthday Kate!🎉

@@eliandkate it’s been quite intense here. People are starting to ask questions like, is this normal-no, no it isn’t. You’ll have to check it out online. First time CA had such high warnings. We had a 100 year flood I think 2018 and 8” fell in an hour because the storm stalled out and just kept dumping. I heard on the national news that may happen in CA. I’ve heard up to 20” of rain could be possible in parts and it may go to Tuesday. They were already having mud slides today and it just started. It’s near LA .

72 yrs, but I am still learning - I started my onions & peppers just before you did - grow lights indoors, no heat mats. I would guess your seedlings are at least a week ahead of mine. Just worth noting..Thank you for these teaching videos, Eli. Happy Birthday, Kate! 🎉

I do pot up my seedlings every year here in the US. Usually once is sufficient until I can get them outside at the end of May. Onions go out in late March, they like the cold. Happy Birthday Kate 🎉

The neatness and conformity of those onions made me so much happier than perhaps I should've been! I'm the silly gardener that decided to heat her greenhouse in Inverness this year, my trays are like small battalions in straight lines, heat pads too. I'm worried my party animal persona has gone in favour of Ailsa Craig and kale. Help, wait until my life becomes tomatoes and cucumbers! Note that land cress has overwintered for it's second year up here, bit squashed from the snow, but green and peppery 🎉

Kale and land cress usually do fine over winter for us, good hardy plants. You’re a brave woman heating your greenhouse, it’ll cost a fortune

I pot up from trays to 4” individual pots because I start more than I need (in separate pots I can give some away). 🎉HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE! ❤ I love your Steve ❤ I trimmed my onion tops when they were 5 inches tall, potted them up 2 weeks later and will move them to the greenhouse to make space for the next seeds to start in the house. Onions love the cold weather in the greenhouse and get planted into garden beds in late May.

Happy belated birthday Kate! My peppers are'nt doing anything yet ✊

I'm here in the Southeast part of the US, and sounds like we do pretty much the same thing as far as the starting mix goes. Only thing different, is the mix you used to transplant your seedlings in is relatively what I start my seeds in. Speaking of which, I just got out my note pad today to write down the main seeds I'll be planting. Starting this next coming up weekend is our seed starting dates by the Moon Signs, and I am looking so forward to it. I actually got outside this morning and got my seed starting mix ready. 3 big scoops peat moss, 1 big scoop compost, and a 2 cups Pearlite. Now, I have to dig through the storage room to get to my grow box. I made myself a Plastic storage tote (Container) into a grow box by making a wood lid on top and added some light fixtures to it. Another thing I love about this season, is the amount of varieties of different items I am planting. Tomatoes alone, I have 13 different kinds I'm playing with and as far as the Peppers go, I have 15 different types. Last year, my mind was all over the place dealing with so many different vegetables in what they needed and the amount of stuff to help get the best harvest out of each, I was frantic and so stressed out. So this year, I'm making it simple. ONLY tomatoes and Peppers is the main garden this year. Sure, there'll be other items in the garden, but only ones I know don't need a ton of what to get a good harvest. Onions is one of those plants. I planted my bulbing onions last spring and they've made it threw the winter just fine. I finally transplanted them in the garden bed last August and watched them grow from the size of yours to pencil size all winter. I'm hoping here in the next few weeks when the weather starts to warm up, they take off and I'll get a harvest by June. BTW, I bought myself a Columnar Apple tree since the last video you posted. I'm so looking forward to watching it grow. I didn't even realize there was such a thing, until I watched your video. Thank you and I hope and wish you the best of luck in your 2024 Garden Season. Can't wait to see more Eli and Kate videos.

thanks - I will try that this year - I am growing Red Baron and Sturon, purple spring onions and pink shallots from seed. The best tomato for me is Apero, I also grow Sungold and Gardeners Delight.

I was under the impression by trimming the tops early in growing was to focus the energy towards strengthening the root and bulb growth. This year is my first time growing onions. I bought some starts and did separate most of them to plant in my raised bed. They are protected with a greenhouse as we get plenty of rain in Oregon. They are doing well, but sort of in a slow growing dormant state. The tops have gotten long again and will probably trim them again soon. This year also growing walking onions for the first time! Those I planted directly from small bulbs into garden pots. Didn't need to cover them when we got a little bit of snow. They are pretty hardy. Happy Birthday Kate!! Hope you had a fabulous day!!

The trimming them to make the bulb bigger is a common thing I see on KZread too which is why I first looked into it, but alas no. It doesn’t affect the bulb at all ☹️

Almost eveyone i know in us/canada pots up their seedkings. Ive alsywss done it. Its exciting for sure. My onions are getting close to needing a trim, and ice managed to reisit popoing off the seed heads. I will do a short trim to get the heads off. Then a skightly larger trim and save the clippings to eat.

Hi Eli and Kate (in the background doing the dull job of fence painting😂) your onions look so neat at the end, I don't give mine a hair cut but I'm thinking I might now for shear tidiness 😊 I grow Ailsa Craig too although I multisow mine in clumps of 3-4 as I interplant them between my asparagus rows so I try to maximise the space. @@eliandkate Yes I know what you mean but the onion roots are fairly shallow and the asparagus is way down in the compost so they don't compete very much, or at least they haven't to date!! 🤔🥴😊

I am in Minnesota, in northern U.S.A.. I don't know how my climate compares to your's, but I started onions (first time EVER) on 02-Feb-2024. I was amazed how many seeds were in the package, so I planted about 4 times what I had planned, just to clear the package, and have another I didn't even open! I just found your channel about a week ago, and love it already! I think I subscribed after the 2nd video I saw. Keep up the GREAT videos! 👍👍, and another 👍👍 for your drink supplier!

I think I must have read somewhere that onion sets were (kind of) frost hardy so I shoved mine outside last November - and they are alive I think (at the moment). And I put them in too deep but hey I'm a beginner.😂

Yeah sets are hardy and a lot of them are meant to go out in winter (here anyway), seedlings aren’t quite as hardy, wouldn’t quite cope with winter but will manage early spring here

I'm across the pond, and I too, pot up my seedlings. The VAST majority of my seeds sown, are in seed starter (Soil-less, and as you say, lacking nutrition, for the most part). well done, you!

For me, I pot up 2 times, before my pepper, tomato, cukes, zucchini, squash, etc go into their "forever home." That's Fabric Grow Bags! On Onion, I OVERSOW in a 3.5x3.5 square and then, leave them there, until I transplant outside into their 25 gallon grown bags. of 4 years growing, I have trimmed 2 years and not trimmed two. (every other to see if there is a difference) This year will be a trim. The bits I cut off? I end up using that night in whatever I am cooking!

My seeds start in the 1.5" square @@eliandkate (72 per 1020???) and then, some get up-potted to the 3.5 x 3.5 square, or some get potted to the 4 inch round. At this stage is when they get their compost, or soil mix. They grow up so fast... only too soon, we're looking at Universities for them, right? Where did the time go?!?

Thanks for the vid. After two weeks of storms (as you know) too much garden fencing and other stuff outside to sort when its dry. I`ve only just got the onions sown and as long as we do not have any frosts I will leave them under some bubble wrap in the greenhouse. 16c during the day in the greenhouse when the sun comes out so here`s hoping they germinate.

Trimming the tops also gets rid of the seed shells on top too. I prefer to trim onions at least 3 times twice inside and once outside. Do you trim roots when planting out?

Good evening, started my sowing of onions on the 1st & 18th January unfortunately for me i don't have a greenhouse or even a garden for that but have a small balcony. My onion stems are around 4-5" have just moved each into biodegradable pots and if this is the correct way potting them into large buckets/planters when the time comes. What do you think??. Thank you for your video. This is my first year growing. Andy

You do get much stronger plants if you have lights (if you are planting this early), but you don’t need grow lights as such. I grew them on my greenhouse bench last year with just the natural light available. They were slower than they’ve been this year but I got a great harvest in the end.

Wow, never heard of trimming the top of onions before! Can defo see how it might benefit the little plants. Eli, can I ask you a couple of questions please: 1) are these seed trays from Huw Richards or are they the Charles Dowding ones? 2) would you mind sharing your recipe for your seed mix as well as your potting mix? Looks lovely and fluffy 3) your pepper seedlings are sooooo much more advanced than mine (sowed my King of the North on 11th January and true leaves are only just starting to emerge). I’ve got them under growlights (got Spider Farm lights for Christmas), but wondering if they’re placed too close, or perhaps too far from the seedlings? they’re suspended about 10-15 cm from the top of the seedlings. I’m starting to wonder if this might be the reason why they turned a purplish colour 🤔 4) Shouldn’t it be YOU bringing Kate a cuppa, since it’s HER birthday and the work she’s doing outside looks far more thirst inducing? 😁

So the module trays are from any company called containerwise and you can get them on their website. This is the company both Huw and Charles get their module trays from which they then sell. Lights, obviously it’ll depend on the strength of your lights but I generally have mine about 3 inches above the plant. If the tips of the leaves start to go yellow then the light is too close.

It’ll depend on how big they get but prob won’t be putting them out in the greenhouse till April at the earliest

I trim my onions all the time zone 3 canada

Pfft lol I need to trim. But I learned last year.. we have such strong winds here in Sask Canada my tops we 3ft high so with them so big and luscious as well as interfering with my other plants they got haircuts ever time there were a foot to 2ft tall. I the dehydrated them all I had so many jars of chives but the bulbs hardly go big. My garden was big and luscious but my yield was none to some yield. We had a cool summer cool nights every night and the day we had some very hot days but mostly beautiful cool days 😊 but the nights were constantly cold so not sure what was happening so going to try something a bit different with my soil and just plant as only do some companion planting and plant more herbs and flowers that keep the nasties away. So many aphids last year and with a mild winter we are looking at drought this year. Won't be a boring gardening year that's for sure.

@@eliandkate ahhh thanks for the prompt reply. I think I’m gonna give it a go. Also, I’m going to do an experiment, having watched your pinching out video. Half I’m going to pinch out and half I’m going to leave. They’re not nearly as far on as yours, as I didn’t sow anything until the end of Feb. Also they will be outdoors because I have to give my greenhouse over to aubergines and cucumbers. And it’s only a standard 7x5 😂 Great content as always! 😃👍

Happy birthday Kate. 😊 Great video Eli. Thank you lovely. Just a wee question. I've got my onions in a heated propagator in the greenhouse and they've germinated. However I'm about to start sweet pepper seeds in the same propagator. However they need a much higher temp to germinate. Will the onion seedlings struggle in the increased temperature and if so, can they be left in the unheated greenhouse?

It’d be better to take them out the heated propagator if you are about to crank the heat but I’d give the onions a wee bit of protection… maybe a standard propagator lid for just now.

I imagine quite a lot of folk were taught through relatives or others in the community. It’s a great way to learn, I wish I’d had that chance, I might have started gardening a lot earlier in life. I imagine we probably wouldn’t have ever thought to question how we did things, well my age group and older anyway) cause we didn’t have the same exposure to new ways of gardening as we do now.

@@eliandkategot them a few years ago and love them. The heavy duty trays are useful also for many things. Have to keep a close eye 👁️ on them when I share the crop, others like them as well😅.

Hello Eli, thanks for the lovely video. Since you mentiond seed sowing mix doesnt have much nutrition. Does that mean brand shoudknt be this important? We started gardening late last year and still alot to learn! Thank you

So seed mix doesn’t need much nutrition but you want it to be fluffy and light so that it doesn’t just sit sodden wet. I wouldn’t focus on brand so much as how does it feel, is it fine, does it feel fluffy. Same with potting mix, most of the costlier ones are because they add fertiliser etc, which you don’t need if it has compost in there. But again you want fine, light and fluffy. It’s a different issue if you are using peat based products because side they hold a lot of moisture and are slightly acidic so there are usually additives in there to combat this.
